  • Drosophila Ribosomal Proteins Are Associated with Linker Histone H1 and Suppress Gene Transcription
Downloaded from genesdev.cshlp.org on October 2, 2021 - Published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press Drosophila ribosomal proteins are associated with linker histone H1 and suppress gene transcription Jian-Quan Ni,1,3 Lu-Ping Liu,1,3 Daniel Hess,1 Jens Rietdorf,1 and Fang-Lin Sun1,2,4 1Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, Basel CH-4058, Switzerland; 2Institute of Epigenetics and Cancer Research, School of Medicine, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100080, China The dynamics and function of ribosomal proteins in the cell nucleus remain enigmatic. Here we provide evidence that specific components of Drosophila melanogaster ribosomes copurify with linker histone H1. Using various experimental approaches, we demonstrate that this association of nuclear ribosomal proteins with histone H1 is specific, and that colocalization occurs on condensed chromatin in vivo. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis confirmed that specific ribosomal proteins are associated with chromatin in a histone H1-dependent manner. Overexpression of either histone H1 or ribosomal protein L22 in Drosophila cells resulted in global suppression of the same set of genes, while depletion of H1 and L22 caused up-regulation of tested genes, suggesting that H1 and ribosomal proteins are essential for transcriptional gene repression. Overall, this study provides evidence for a previously undefined link between ribosomal proteins and chromatin, and suggests a role for this association in transcriptional regulation in higher eukaryotes. • Davidson College Catalog
EDUCATION OF VETERANS Davidson College is cooperating in full with the Veterans Administration in its educational program for men whose education was interrupted by the war and for veterans who plan to enter college for the first time. Davidson is a liberal arts college offering those courses leading to the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts Degrees. Description in detail of the offerings of the College is listed under the appropriate head- ings in the catalog. Members of the armed forces who wish to enter Davidson should contact the Registrar of the College who is in position to give veterans full information concerning the program of the College for ex-servicemen. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE The financial assistance available to veterans for educational purposes is a subsistence allowance by the Federal Government of $65 a month if without dependents or $90 a month with one or more dependents. For the customary charges for tuition and necessary college fees an amount not to exceed $500 will be paid for an ordinary college year. This amount is more than sufficient to meet the college fees and charges at Davidson. Such fees and charges have been estimated to be as low as $400 for the twelve months. The fees and charges include all tuition and college fees, medical fees, laboratory fees, books, and supplies. From the allowance of $65 or $90 a month a veteran must take care of his living expenses including board, room and laundry. Veterans who wish to attend Davidson under the provisions and benefits of the "G. I. Bill" should communicate with the nearest Veterans Administration office.

  • EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation. Dismemberment. Serial killers. Graphic gore. Hey, Kids! COMICS!! Since the release of The Dark Knight film series and the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic-book characters have become wildly popular in other forms of entertainment, particularly television. But broadcast TV’s representations of comic-book characters are no longer the bright, colorful, and optimistic figures of the past. Children are innately attracted to comic-book characters; but in today’s comic book-based programs, children are being exposed to graphic violence, profanity, dark and intense themes, and other inappropriate content. In this research report, the PTC examined comic book-themed prime-time programming on the maJor broadcast networks during November, February, and May “sweeps” periods from November 2012 through May 2019. Programs examined were Fox’s Gotham; CW’s Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends oF Tomorrow, and Riverdale; and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents oF S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Marvel’s Inhumans. Research data suggest that broadcast television programs based on these comic-book characters, created and intended for children, are increasingly inappropriate and/or unsafe for young viewers. In its research, the PTC found the following during the study period: • In comic book-themed programming with particular appeal to children, young viewers were exposed to over 6,000 incidents of violence, over 500 deaths, and almost 2,000 profanities. • The most violent program was CW’s Arrow. Young viewers witnessed 1,241 acts of violence, including 310 deaths, 280 instances of gun violence, and 26 scenes of people being tortured.

  • Inscriptions and Graves Niagara Peninsula
"Ducit Amor Patriae" INSCRIPTIONS AND GRAVES IN THE NIAGARA PENINSULA JANET CARNOCHAN NIAGARA HISTORICAL SOCIETY RE-PRINT OF NUMBER 19 WITH ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS PRICE 60 CENTS THE NIAGARA ADVANCE PRINT, NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE FOREWARD In response to many requests for this popular publications, which was the outcome of many toilsome journeys, and much research on the part of the late Miss Janet Carnochan, the Society at length presents it with corrections and additions in the hope that it will be more valued than ever. Note: No. 19 is a Reprint of No. 10 with Additions and Corrections. PREFACE In studying the history of Niagara and vicinity the graveyards have been found a fruitful source of information, and over fifty of these have been personally visited. The original plan was to copy records of early settlers, United Empire Loyalists, Military or Naval Heroes, or those who have helped forward the progress of the country as Clergy, Teachers, Legislators, Agriculturists, etc., besides this, any odd or quaint inscriptions. No doubt many interesting and important inscriptions have been omitted, but the limits of our usual publication have already been far exceeded and these remain for another hand to gather. To follow the original lettering was desired, but the additional cost would have been beyond our modest means. Hearty thanks are here returned for help given by Col. Cruikshank, Rev. Canon Bull, Dr. McCollum, Mr. George Shaw, Rev. A. Sherk, Miss Forbes, Miss Shaw and Miss Brown, who all sent inscriptions from their own vicinity. It is hoped that the index of nearly six hundred names will be found of use and that our tenth publication will receive as kind a welcome as have the other pamphlets sent out by our Society.
