2009-2010 AnnuAl REPORT Christopher Seaman, Music Director Jeff Tyzik, Principal Pops Conductor Michael Butterman, Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach The Louise & Henry Epstein Family Chair Arild Remmereit, Music Director-Designate Dear Friends, What a difference a year makes. It was just one year ago when our Annual Report message reflected the nationwide recession and its impact on the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. In a year of great triumph and profound challenges, the immortal line from Dickens, “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” summed up the state of the RPO, as we faced a 2008-2009 operating deficit of $776,000. Today, we still have a long road ahead of us— but we are proud to announce that the RPO was able to achieve a balanced budget for the 2009-2010 Season. This is truly a remarkable feat, and we could only have accomplished this with the shared sacrifices made by our musicians, conductors, and staff. During the 2009-2010 Season, our employees accepted wage and benefit reductions totalling $520,000. Our musicians and staff understand the importance of creating and sustaining a sound from the president & ceo financial future for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and these concessions are just one of the many ways they support and board chair us everyday. It is also because of your support that we were able to reach a balanced operating budget. You may recall that last January, we instituted the Million Dollar Community Challenge. A group of anonymous leadership donors pledged $520,000 in gifts to be matched by community donations. This was a truly successful initiative which raised nearly $1.1 million to augment the campaign. We are tremendously grateful for this enormous show of support. The 2009-2010 Season began officially on October 8, 2009, with the re-opening of the newly renovated Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. Music Director Christopher Seaman led the Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s triumphant Ninth Symphony and Geo —a work commissioned by the RPO and composed by our gifted partner, Eastman School of Music Dean Douglas Lowry. This concert paved the way for a season of memorable music-making. From guest conductors including Arild Remmereit, Rossen Milanov, James Gaffigan, Andreas Delfs, Jahja Ling, and Justin Brown, to guest artists including Misha Dichter, Orli Shaham, and Augustin Hadelich, the 2009-2010 Season continued the RPO’s long-standing tradition of artistic excellence. 2 While many orchestras across the country have reported a We thank you for your continued support of the Rochester continued decline in ticket sales and in annual fund donations, Philharmonic Orchestra during the challenging year behind us we have achieved some growth. Thanks in part to the Million Dollar Challenge, the Annual Campaign finished with an increase of 4% over the previous season, another point of pride in the current economic environment. Much has happened since the end of our 2009-2010 fiscal year on August 31, 2010. We’ve enjoyed the December 2010 grand opening of the new Eastman East Wing which paves the way for an even greater experience for our patrons. We must take this opportunity to recognize the phenomenal vision and leadership of University of Rochester President Joel Seligman, Eastman School of Music Dean Douglas Lowry, and Senior Executive Associate Dean Jamal Rossi in bringing the expansion of the Eastman School and the renovation of its Eastman Theatre to completion. We also would like to thank the many supporters whose generosity made possible this landmark project for the Eastman School of Music, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the City of Rochester. The September 2010 announcement of Maestro Arild Remmereit as the RPO’s eleventh Music Director has added to the excitement and anticipation of great things to come. And the momentum is building: the 2010-2011 Season is now the highest-grossing subscription year in the Orchestra’s PHOTO CREDITS: storied 88-year history. Charles H. One of the most notable, of course, was the long-awaited re-opening of the newly renovated Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. The triumphant concert featured one of the most timeless pieces, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, but also an exciting new piece, written by none other than Eastman School Dean Douglas Lowry. Geo was a joy to conduct, and I can only imagine a great experience as one sat in the seats picturing George Eastman’s pride and astonishment over this beautifully renovated hall. Just a week after this celebratory concert, I made the announcement that I would not return as Music Director following the end of the 2010-2011 Season. My years with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra have brought me great joy, both artistically and personally. I have many, many fond memories of the artists we have worked with, the concerts we have produced, and the audiences who have joined us along the way. Rochester will not be through with me forever, though! I have been honored with the lifetime position of Conductor Laureate beginning with the culmination of my tenure as Music Director from our conductors in June 2011. Until then, I hope you will continue to join me both at Philharmonics performances and for Symphony 101. It is a true treat to share these musical experiences with you, my beloved friends. The RPO’s announcement of a balanced budget for the 2009- 2010 Season does not come without immense sacrifice from the musicians and the administrative staff. I would like to add my own personal thanks to these individuals for working with the RPO to achieve financial stability, ensuring that we all get to enjoy this fine Orchestra for years to come. I also would like to thank our supporters: no matter how large or small your gift to the RPO is, it means great things. Thank you for your continued support. As always, best wishes, Christopher Seaman Music Director 4 Dear Friends: Dear RPO Friends: Each season begins with renewed excitement for the artistic The 2009-2010 Season marked my tenth anniversary with the possibilities and the concert experiences to come.
