Email: [email protected] 3Chiang Mai Campus, Thailand ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to (1) study Mpi’s community context and the problem of Mpi’s health care; (2) propose model of Mpi’s health care management with self-reliance. A participatory action research process (PAR) was used to promote Mpi ethnic group to be caring partners for their self-health care management with self-reliance. Data were gathered from qualitative methods. Focus group, in-depth interviews, and SWOT analysis brainstorming of the health care management in Mpi community with the representatives of the relative government and non-government organizations were used to collect the qualitative data. Eighty stakeholders were purposive samplied from local government officers, vocal villages, career leaders, village health volunteers, The Director of Suan-Kheun district health promotion hospital, and the interested Mpi residents. The study revealed the top five diseases among (1) Tuberculosis (TB) (2) Cirrhosis (3) Hypertension (4) Diabetes and (5) Knee Osteoarthritis. Moreover, five main problem of Mpi’s health care management were revealed. They were the problem in lacking of knowledge and understanding in health care ; the problem in the inaccessibility of health insurance on health care; the problem in understanding health care media communicated from public health sector which usually used academic and technical terms; the problem in the communication between Mpi ethnic group and public health officers which they were unable to communicate with Mpi language to make them understand about the health care and prevention and the problem in lacking of curriculum developing to create Mpi’s health care communicator in area level continuously. The result of the first objective led to participate to think, to do, to solve these problems, and to propose model of Mpi’s health care management with self-reliance and sustainability as well. Regarding the model of Mpi’s health care management with self- reliance, the relevant stakeholders in Mpi community proposed five elements (5 Cs Model). These included (1) C1: Creating Center for the proactive health management of Mpi ethnic group; (2) C2: Core mechanisms developing for operating Mpi’s proactive health management center; (3) C3: Co-networking and developing the 75 International Journal of Applied Business and Economic Research Wattana Wanitchanont, Siriporn Phuntulee and Nirote Sinnarong potential of Mpi’s health care communicator; (4) C4: Curriculum developing of Mpi’s health care communicator; and (5) Creating several Mpi’s health promotion medias to empower Mpi ethnic group promoting community strength based on Mpi’s health care management with self-reliance in the individual level, the family level and the community level with the accuracy of information and the sustainability. INTRODUCTION Statement of the Problems Having a good health is an important agenda which all countries put the importance on it. Likewise, Thailand put the importance on well being of people which it can be an indicator measuring a level of the country development; not only well being of Thai people but also ethnic groups living along border of the country. In the past, Mpi ethnic group was an ethnic tribe which migrated from Yunnan region, China, and had settled down in Phrae province, Thailand more than 300 years. As Mpi ethnic group used their local language for communication, they had a problem in understanding health care media communicated from public health sector which usually used academic and technical terms. Then, it was quite difficult to understand for Mpi ethnic group who used only Mpi local language. So, this research tried to enlarge the strength and limit the weakness to solve the problem. At the present, Mpi local language nearly disappears and also there is no conservation to the next generation. Thus, this study attempted to study Mpi’s community context and the problem of Mpi’s health care to propose model of Mpi’s health care management with self-reliance through Mpi local wisdom. Moreover, this research will encourage an awareness of health care among local people in order to have a good quality of life and can be a model of health management in the form of self-reliance and participation of all sectors for sustainability. Objectives of the Study 1. To explore the community context and problems in health care of Mpi ethnic group. 2. To propose a model of health management based on self-reliance of Mpi ethnic groups. Significance of the Study According to the investigation of health of Mpi ethnic group it was found that their top five health problems were as follows: (1) tuberculosis, cirrhosis of the liver, (3) high blood pressure, (4) diabetes, and (5) Knee osteoarthritis, respectively (Suankhuen Public Health Office, 2015). As a matter of fact, Mpi ethnic group has spoken language but has no written language. This causes perception problems because they do not understand the official language and technical terms related to health care and disease prevention. This makes Mpi ethnic group cannot effectively access public relations data on health care and promotion

Currently, Mpi does not have vernacular literature, and may not have sufficient language vitality to warrant the development of such literature. Since there are only two Mpi villages in Thailand, and they are surrounded by Northern Thai communities, it is reasonable to be concerned about the vitality of the Mpi language. The purposes of this study were to assess the need for vernacular literature development among the Mpi of Northern Thailand and to determine which (if any) Mpi varieties should be developed. This assessment focused on language vitality and bilingualism in Northern Thai. Additionally, lexicostatistics were used to measure lexical similarity between Mpi varieties. Researchers – often implicitly – assume that either there is little variation across human populations, or that these “standard subjects” are as representative of the species as any other population. Are these assumptions justified? Here, our review of the comparative database from across the behavioral sciences suggests both that there is substantial variability in experimental results across populations and that WEIRD subjects are particularly unusual compared with the rest of the species – frequent outliers. The domains reviewed include visual perception, fairness, cooperation, spatial reasoning, categorization and inferential induction, moral reasoning, reasoning styles, self-concepts and related motivations, and the heritability of IQ. The findings suggest that members of WEIRD societies, including young children, are among the least representative populations one could find for generalizing about humans. Many of these findings involve domains that are associated with fundamental aspects of psychology, motivation, and behavior – hence, there are no obvious a priori grounds for claiming that a particular behavioral phenomenon is universal based on sampling from a single subpopulation.

    Profile Year: 2006 People and Language Detail Report Language Name: Mpi ISO Language Code: mpz The Mpi of Thailand The Mpi people live in just two villages in northern Thailand - Ban Dong in Phrae Province, and Ban Sakoen in Nan Province - although they say they originally came from Yunnan Province in China. The Mpi fled China 250-300 years ago and went to Laos. They were captured in a war soon after in Laos and brought to Thailand, and have lived there ever since. There are approximately 1,500 Mpi people, with perhaps only 900 of them still using the Mpi language. Ban Dong is on a plain, just outside a provincial capital while Ban Sakoen is in the mountains. The Mpi people dress and act just like the Northern Thai people who they live among, and they speak Northern Thai fluently. The younger generations also speak Central Thai which they learn in school. In a generation or two, Mpi might no longer be spoken by anyone. There are still quite a few speakers of Mpi in Ban Dong but very few in Ban Sakoen. Even in Ban Dong, many of the children do not speak Mpi, although some still can understand it when they hear it. The Mpi are mainly rice farmers, but many also work in the city and some hold community leadership positions beyond their own village. The Mpi are all Buddhists. There is no church in either Mpi village and there are currently no Christian workers specifically targeting the Mpi people. In effect, this means that they are grouped together with the Northern Thai as far as Christian outreach is concerned.

Enfield and Bernard Comrie Mainland Southeast Asian languages State of the art and new directions 1 Mainland Southeast Asia and its people Mainland Southeast Asia (hereafter: MSEA) can be broadly defined as the area occupied by present day Cambodia, Laos, Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam, along with areas of China south of the Yangtze River. Also sometimes included are the seven states of Northeast India, and—although here the term ‘mainland’ no longer applies—the islands from Indonesia and Malaysia running southeast to Australia and West Papua (see Map 1). There are no exact borders around the MSEA area. Different scholars draw lines in different places. But there is nevertheless a core (Comrie 2007: 45). MSEA is always taken to include Indochina—Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia— together with Thailand, and, usually, Peninsular Malaysia and part or all of Myanmar (see Map 2). This book covers the broader scope of Greater MSEA, with several chapters moving beyond the core area of Indochina and Thailand, in all directions; see chapters in this book by Vittrant and by Jenny on Myanmar (cf. Bradley 1995; Watkins 2005), by Post on Northeast India (cf. Morey and Post 2008, 2010; Hyslop, Morey, and Post 2011, 2012, 2013), by Gil on Insular Southeast Asia (cf. Adelaar and Himmelmann 2005; Blust 2013a, b), and by de Sousa on Southern China (cf. Bauer 1996; Ansaldo and Matthews 2001; Chappell 2001). MSEA is a tropical and sub-tropical area with rugged and well-forested hills and river systems running from higher altitudes in the northwest to the plains and deltas of the south.
