E-mails : [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This study designed at identifying insect pests that attack some trees and shrubs grown in the orchards in different regions, middle of Iraq. The investigation included date palm, citrus, pomegranate trees and grape shrubs. During the survey, 10 species were recorded on date palms (the most infested was Ommatissus lybicus de Bergevin, 1930, followed by Oryctes elegans Prell, 1914), four species on citrus (the most infested was Aonidiella orientalis (Newstead, 1894) followed by whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood, 1856), one species only on pomegranate ( Aphis punicae Passerini, 1863), and one species Arboridia hussaini (Ghauri, 1963) on Grapes. Given the importance of date palm trees in Iraq, the most important insect pests present and recorded in previous studies have been summarized. Also, the synonyms of the species and their geographical distribution are provided. Keywords : Iraq, Orchards, Pests, Shrubs, Survey, Trees. However, the experiment was conducted on biology of pomegranate fruit borer at the laboratory of Division of Entomology and Nematology, ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Hessaraghatta, Bengaluru during 2013-14. Biological studies revealed that gravid female lays shiny white eggs singly on the calyx of flowers or on young fruits. The incubation, larval, prepupal and pupal periods were 7.15 ± 0.10, 32.9 ± 2.38, 4.35 ± 0.12 and 10.25 ± 0.10 days respectively. The adult longevity of male and female was 8.26 ± 0.14 and 10.28 ± 0.20 days respectively. -

Abstract Horticultural University, A number of insect pests are known to infest fruits of guava in India. The most important pest is fruitflies Venkataramannagudem, (Bactrocera dorsalis, B. zonata and B. correcta) followed by the next report of the fruit borers West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, (Conogethes punctiferalis and Deudorix isocrates). However, the experiment was conducted on seasonal India incidence of fruit borers on guava cv. Taiwan white at the College of Horticulture and farmer’s orchard, N Emmanuel Venkataramannagudem-West Godavari during 2019-2020. The maximum number of oviposition marks oriental fruit flies were observed on Hissar Agricultural University, Hisar, Surkha (i.e. 19 oviposition marks/5 fruits) followed by Banarasi Surkha, Allahabad Safeda (16 Haryana, India oviposition marks/5 fruits) and Punjab pink (15 oviposition marks/5 fruits) whereas minimum observed in Lalit (8 oviposition marks/ five fruits). -

Biology of Anar butterfly: Deudorix (Virachola) isocrates Fabricus (Lepidoptera: Lycanidae) in mid hill of Himachal Pradesh ABSTRACT The studies on biology of fruit borer, Virachola isocrates Fabricius carried out under laboratory conditions revealed that gravid female lays shiny white eggs singly on the calyx of flowers or on young fruits and on leaves. The average incubation period was recorded to be of 8.66 ± 2.05 days. The developmental period of first, second, third, fourth and fifth instar was 2.66 ± 0.46, 3.33 ± 0.46, 3.66 ± 0.46, 3.33 ± 0.46 and 3.33 ± 0.46 days, respectively. The total larval period was found to be of 15.33 ± 6.94 days. Pupal stage found to be 15.33 ± 6.94 days). INTRODUCTION Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is one of the important commercial fruit crop of the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. In India, pomegranate is grown on 2, 34, 000 ha area with a production of 28, 45, 000 MT (Anonymous 2018). Due to the high economic returns being obtained with pomegranate, the area under pomegranate cultivation in Himachal Pradesh has increased to 2,847 hectares with a production of 3,215 MT (Anonymous 2019). In India, pomegranate is attacked by more than 45 insects (Butani, 1979) of which Pomegranate butterfly Deudorix (Virachola) isocrates is one the most obnoxious pest and has been reported to cause 40-90 per cent damage to pomegranate fruits (Atwal, 1986). -

A search of both print and electronic sources of information identified 12 pests of date of quarantine significance that exist in Israel and could be introduced into the United States in shipments of that commodity. A Consequences of Introduction value was estimated by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate/host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact. A Likelihood of Introduction value was estimated by considering both the quantity of the commodity imported annually and the potential for pest introduction and establishment. The two values were summed to estimate an overall Pest Risk Potential, which is an estimation of risk in the absence of mitigation measures. This pest was listed in the DROPSA alert list for orange and mandarin fruit. Deudorix isocrates (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) Location of life stages on plant parts: on pomegranate, eggs on flower or young fruit, larvae bore into fruit (Zalom et al., 2009); The caterpillars bore into ripening fruits, feed on the seeds (NBAIR, 2016). This seems to also apply to citrus. Fruit pathway: yes. Other pathways: plants for planting. Hosts: Punica granatum (Zalom et al., 2009) is the main host. Others include Citrus, Citrus sinensis, Citrus reticulata, Citrus deliciosa, Emblica officinalis, Psidium guava, Cleistanthus collinus, Sapindus (CABI CPC and abstracts), Tamarindus, Manilkara zapota (NBAIR, 2016). Distribution: Asia: Bangladesh, India (CABI CPC), Sri Lanka (Bambaradenyia, 2006; Zalom et al., 2009). Damage: D. isocrates causes direct damage to fruit. Affected fruit rot and drop. The holes are often plugged by the anal segment of the caterpillar or its excreta are seen on infested fruits (NBAIR, 2016). This information seems to apply to all fruits mentioned, including citrus, but specific data on impact was found only for pomegranate. D. isocrates and D. epijarbas are important pests of pomegranate in East Asia, especially in the Indian peninsula; they may cause loss of entire crops unless the flowers are sprayed (Holland et al., 2009). There were five larval instars with total larval period being 26 to 32 days (29.4± 0.6 days). Pupa was obtect, pale to dark brown, with adult showing sexual dimorphism- females being bigger, brownish violet, having conspicuous orange patches in forewings. Male smaller, glossy bluish violet and lacks orange patches in forewings. The total lifecycle is completed in 46 to 59 days (52.3± 1.40 days).
