Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Volume 11, No. 1 48 Legend of Nine Dragons and Two Tigers: An Example of City Temples and Blocks in Beijing Xi JU Beijing Normal University, CHINA Abstract: Peking Temple Survey Schedule in Capital Library of China recorded the saying of “nine dragons, two tigers and one stele”, this legend still spread in the old residents in Xizhimen Street 西直门大街. Through the history research and fieldwork, this essay finds out the exact meaning of nine dragons and two tigers and the relationship with the temples, wells in Xizhimen Street. We find three characteristics of the temples in Beijing inner city through the legend: First, the temples have complicated responsibilities, clear objects and class attributes, which is the important reason for the great number of temples in Beijing. Second, the people have their own view and imagination towards the city landscape, this kind of special sense has some difference with the upper class. Finally, temples are not only served for the diverse religious and social needs of the residents, but also the basement of constructing their urban spatial aesthetics, the temples communicates the secular and gods, they are also the junction of city and universe. Based on the understanding and arrangement of the real temples, citizens construct their unique cosmic order. Why did you decide to come to China and do ImmerQi’s Au Pair program? I always wanted to travel and explore the world. Going to China is a great opportunity for me since I want to improve my mandarin Chinese skills. I get along well with children and becoming an Au Pair is just a perfect combination! What’s something that has pleasantly surprised you while in China? I really enjoy the food! There is a housekeeper ( I call her ayi ) who cooks every meal and cuisine is wonderful. The street food is pretty good, as well since it’s really cheap and they make it right in front of you. It’s fun to try all the weird stuff, like fried scorpions and grubs, but there are also plenty of normal things to eat. What have been your duties as an Au Pair? My first week was relaxing so I was able to get settled into life here. So far, I have been helping my au pair child with his homework and playing games with him during his homework breaks. Teddy is really easy to look after and it doesn’t really feel like a job. I just expand his vocabulary by explaining new words to him and correct his grammar.

Bejing photo-essay, September 2019, by Elly View from my window: 4th Ring Road (on the right) and Olympic area (straight ahead) I was invited by a former visiting scholar at ASU to come to Beijing for a month, to teach syntax at the University of Science and Technology, Beijing (USTB). My students were amazingly dedicated and asked so many good questions: I really loved their enthusiasm! My host made life very enjoyable and the experience truly amazing; she and wonderful students showed me Beijing life and sights. More on all of this below! And a friend came up from Zhengzhou and we spent two days exploring the Great Wall outside Beijing, a Ming village, and saw a farm and the most beautiful mountain ranges. Themes in the below are: USTB, cityscape, transportation, world view, art, my teaching here, food, and special sights inside and outside of Beijing. The Great Wall at Badaling The University of Science and Technology has 30,000 students with a number of international students (mainly from Africa), who I was told get better dorms: 2/room where Chinese students are 4 to 7 to a room. Undergraduate fees are US $500-1000 (4000-6000 Y) and graduate ones a little over $1000 (8000- 10000 Y) per year and dorm fees 900 Y. Students get government and departmental aid. USTB is one of many universities in the Haidian/Wudaokou district, in the NW of Beijing; others are Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), and Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). 1 School of Foreign Studies, before the semester started West Gate of USTB; Soviet style buildings BFSU library BLCU North Gate I was perhaps most surprised by how much green there is and how much older architecture is preserved.

Brief Introduction Beijing is the modern capital city of the People’s Republic of China as well as a well known city in the ancient world. It has over 3000 years of history and has been the capital city of five dynasties. This has made Beijing famous for the depth in culture and richness in tourist resources. No visitor to China today wants to miss visiting the Forbidden City, the largest royal palace in the world, the Summer Palace, where the imperial family escaped the summer heat, the Temple of Heaven, or the Great Wall. There are more than 200 major sightseeing spots open to tourists and over 7300 cultural and historical scenes. Tiananmen Square Tiananmen Square, the largest city square in the world with 44 hectares in size, is the central focus of Beijing. To its west stands the Great Hall of People while the National Museum is located in the east. The Monument to the People’s Hero stands high in the middle of the square and the memorial hall of Chairman Mao is located on the south. The Tiananmen Square was enlarged to its current size in early 1950. It can accommodate a half million people at one time. Tiananmen Square became famous in the Western world after the democracy demonstrations which took place in 1989. People will gather around the flag pole for the flag raising or lowering ceremony every day.
