Popular I could say i have a sort of love/hate relationship with grindcore, mostly because when its well made, it’s Kingcrow ‑ Insider completely and utterly awesome, but most of the times its just an amalgam of noise and not in the good sense, December 20, 2013 also i could say i have the same feeling with electronic music in general, so when Aaron Specter‘s Drumcorps no comments pulls this “Grist” saying it’s a mixing of grindcore and breakcore… i tend to take it with a grain of salt. It all starts up with “Botch Up and Die” and it’s pretty grindcore, kinda of a homage to Botch, with the eccentric Dark Tranquility and Sonata guitars over a grind blast beat, its not only amusing but quite groovy, nicely done, “Down” is kinda dance meets Arctica joined forces for Heavy noisecore with distorted samples and guitars into the mix, okkk, “Pig Destroyer Destroyer” has some nice Metal Poker Tournament drumming building to a slowed down chopped distorted noise filled beat … are we making fun of Pig Destroyer?, December 12, 2013 is this supposed to be a compliment or a satire, anyway it all builds up to a distorted guitar breakcore fest, no comments mixing real life drumming with beats and distortion….

During the 1960s, British hard rock bands and the American guitarist Jimi Hendrix developed a more distorted guitar sound and heavier drums and bass that led to a separation of heavy metal from other blues-based rock. Albums by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in 1970 codified the new genre, which was marked by distorted guitar ‘power chords’, heavy riffs, wailing vocals and virtuosic solos by guitarists and drummers. More recently, studies have neglected content analysis due to perceived homogeneity in themes, despite evidence that the modern genre is distinct from its past. As lyrical patterns are strong markers of genre, this study attempts to characterize heavy metal in the 21st century by analyzing lyrics for specific themes and perspectives. Citing evidence that the “Millennial” generation confers significant developments to popular culture, the contemporary genre is termed “Millennial heavy metal” throughout, and the study is framed accordingly.

  • Disposable Underground 35
Volume 15 Number 35 Championing the musically jaded for well over a decade FREE PMB #570, 21010 Southbank St, Sterling VA 20165-7227, USA • www.disposableunderground.com ONE OF THE STALWARTS of the grindcore scene, California’s Phobia has completed and released only the lastest of their several full lenghth albums, Cruel. Here original member Shane McLaughlan speaks of his group, starting with covering a change within the ranks, that of long standing bassist Bruce Reeves exiting Phobia and his replacement. “Yeah, we have someone playing bass right now and he will be doing shows with us,” says Shane, adding that the band also has a new drummer. “But things are going great as of now and even working on a split at this moment with Pig Destroyer.” As Shane admits, this isn’t the first time Phobia has had to deal with a personnel issue. “Oh yeah. Every band has their problems and with us it’s always been a drummer. I don’t think the bass position is that difficult because I have played bass on the last three recordings we have done, which were Get Up And Kill, the split with Skrupel that’s coming out, and will probably be out by time this hits, and three cover tracks for the Unreality compilation on Deep Six, and I played for more than half of the new record. Steve [Burda, guitar] played the other half. So the bass player we have now actually writes and is way more productive as a member. And he is only helping us out at this point, so it’s no real big loss.

Whatever your political leaning, your sexual orientation, your religion or the colour of your skin, the world around us lately has felt divisive, conflicted, and often difficult. Feel free to consider Roadburn your safe haven. Whilst it’s important to stay switched on to the world around us, it doesn’t hurt to take a few days off to recharge your batteries in an inclusive and accepting environment.
