The first six months represent major improvements and growth, followed by the sudden public closure and responses to the Covid health crisis. The year began with the renewal of the Rhythm Foundation’s management agreement. Experience and momentum gathered during the first management term were brought to bear and a season of widely diverse cultural offerings was undertaken. Long awaited capital improvements of the canopy covering and new seating system were completed in February. The season was in the middle of the busiest period in mid March when we closed the facility to the public in mid March due to the Covid health crisis. We immediately modified and adapted our operations using live streaming technologies to complete the Rhythm Foundations’s 32nd season. Emergency funding and support from the City, County and Federal government have been critical to sustaining the organization through this prolonged health crisis. We proactively engaged with community partners to identify funding, tech support and best practices for safe operations. Since going virtual in mid-March, we’ve broadcast sixteen (16) full length concerts as live streams to a collective audience of over 100,000 viewers from all over the world. The 20/21 season ahead is anchored by partnerships with the leading cultural presenting organizations in the South Florida, furthering our goal of establishing the North Beach Bandshell as a major performing arts facility in our region.

Thereafter development aid took different shapes, starting with industrialization and poverty relief, then onto structural adjustments and stabilization of governments, and in the 1990’s the focus on democratization and governance (idem: 24). In the past centuries development aid is primarily perceived as the only solution to Africa’s many problems (ibid.). These forms of development aid are all meant to help improve the lives of people from African countries living in poverty or otherwise inhumane circumstances. However, this attitude towards development aid and Africa can be problematized in a variety of ways.

ABSTRACT This paper broadly examines notions of authenticity and community as they intersect in the music industry, particularly through the concept of the music festival. In seeking to understand these concepts‟ relation to society, the paper briefly overviews some of the tenets of the theory of postmodernism that underlie notions of authenticity and community. These ideas often come in conflict with the dominant, spectacular representations in society. Next, in trying to apply these concepts as represented in the idea of the music festival, it maps the early framework of the original Lollapalooza festivals as notable breaks in the spectacle, defining authenticity and community in an era otherwise indifferent to those concepts. With its antecedent clearly mapped, the paper then examines the role of the reincarnated Lollapalooza festivals and its possibilities to expand on the original‟s framework. Arguing that the new Lollapalooza reveals the ways in which the alternative can be collapsed into the larger spectacle, the paper finally examines the corporate censorship of 2007 headliner Pearl Jam, and how this act stands as antithetical to the original festivals‟ intentions.

    ANGELFEST: ENVIRONMENTAL HARM PLUS FISCAL AND GOVERNANCE EMBARRASSMENT Prepared by Jackie Wollner The San Fernando Valley Audubon Society asserts that no amount of money is worth the destruction of an ecologically sensitive area. Notwithstanding that, the “green” proponents repeatedly claim that raising money for LA Parks is the primary justification for AngelFest. Comparison with venues in other urban areas reveals that L.A. Rec and Parks has made a remarkably bad deal for use of taxpayer-funded Woodley Park. Other cities have raised money by leasing appropriate venues for large festivals. We have conducted a review of three of these and found several important conclusions: ● None of those festival venues overlap a Wildlife Reserve. ● Other cities insist on far more revenue for city parks - by a factor of at least 10 times. ○ Upwards of $10 million vs. $1 million over three years. ○ Significantly higher percentage of ticket sales. ○ Percentage of food, beverage, parking, sponsorships. ● Other cities’ contracts have insurance provisions to cover damage that are much larger than the grossly insufficient $50K AngelFest promoters have offered. ● Other cities have openly discussed the terms of these contracts and have made them available online for public study and evaluation. ● Comparable festivals were all managed by large, wealthy and -- most of all -- highly experienced festival producers. ANGELFEST PROPONENTS CLAIMS ABOUT MONEY TO BE DIRECTED TO LA PARKS ● The now cancelled event permit for AngelFest called for a $250,000 fee for RAP. This document was hidden from the public and was only obtained after repeated requests pursuant to the California Public Records Act.
