D Department of English A Thesis Submitted to Fulfill the Requirements of the Honors Program at Assumption College Spring 2019 Cifarelli 1 Introduction Music is extremely social. It is one of the most expressive art forms our society holds. Due this expressive nature, the art of making music can hold many social connotations and directly involve or relate itself to social occurrences, movements and ideals. This intertwined relationship thus allows music to be a conductor of social change by existing and working within these various social constructs. In addition, those involved with the music-making business are, by association, also potential conductors of social change. -

Music and Politics in Europe from Wagner to the 1960S
History 101-47 Music and Politics in Europe from Wagner to the 1960s MWF 10-10:50, Kauke 102 Professor David Tompkins Email: [email protected] Tel. 330-287-1902 119 Kauke Office Hours: M 3-4, Th 2-4, and by appt. This course examines the often fraught, comp licated relationship between music and politics from the mid-nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth. Our field of inquiry will include all of Europe, but will particularly focus on Germany, Poland, and the Soviet Union. We will look at several composers and their legacies in considerable detail, including Beethoven, Wagner, and Shostakovich. While much of our attention will be devoted to “high” or “serious” music , we will explore developments in popular music as well. The four main areas of inquiry include: · music that supports political systems and ideologies, and is commissioned by governments, especially nationalism, fascism, Nazism, and stalinism · music linked to political movements more broadly · oppositional or dissident music that attempts to oppose political leaders and effect political change · the attempts by composers and musicians to create a sphere for themselves separate from politics (a political act in itself) REQUIRED READINGS Most of our readings will be articles or chapters from books, which will either be directly accessible from the internet (URLs provided here and on the interactive syllabus on Blackboard), or will be put on e-reserve at the library (password is nationalism). I expect you to print these out and bring them to class with you with your comments and reactions. Protest Music As Adult Education and Learning for Social Change: a Theorisation of a Public Pedagogy of Protest Music
Australian Journal of Adult Learning Volume 55, Number 3, November 2015 Protest music as adult education and learning for social change: a theorisation of a public pedagogy of protest music John Haycock Monash University Since the 1960’s, the transformative power of protest music has been shrouded in mythology. Sown by musical activists like Pete Seeger, who declared that protest music could “help to save the planet”, the seeds of this myth have since taken deep root in the popular imagination. While the mythology surrounding the relationship between protest music and social change has become pervasive and persistent, it has mostly evaded critical interrogation and significant theorisation. By both using the notion as a theoretical lens and adding to scholarship in the field, this article uncovers understandings of the public pedagogical dimensions of protest music, as it takes place as a radical practice and critical form of contemporary mass culture. In doing this, this article provides a theorisation of public pedagogy as it encapsulates protest music, and those who are conceptualised as the critical and radical public pedagogues who produce this mass cultural form. Keywords: public pedagogy; protest music; adult learning; education for social change 424 John Haycock Maybe it’s just the time of year Maybe it’s the time of man I don’t know who I am But life is for learning… Joni Mitchell, Woodstock, (1970), [side B, track 5]. Introduction The emergence of protest or a political popular music in the 1960s has been inextricably linked in the popular imaginary and public history with social change and youth revolt. -

Communal activism spread and flourished until the mid-1970s in many parts of the world. To analyse this global phenomenon, this thesis explores the similarities and differences between the commune movements of Denmark, UK and the US. By examining the motivations for the communal revival, links with 1960s radicalism, communes’ praxis and outward-facing activities, and the crisis within the commune movement and responses to it, this thesis places communal activism within the context of wider social movements for social change. Challenging existing interpretations which have understood the communal revival as an alternative living experiment to the nuclear family, or as a smaller part of the counter-culture, this thesis argues that the commune participants created varied and new experiments for a total revolution against the prevailing social order and its dominant values and institutions, including the patriarchal family and capitalism. -

It takes mucho cojones—18 of them, apparently—to stage a giant, carnival-like festival for your first live appearance in a foreign country, and that's exactly what SLIPKNOT did in December of 2015 when they held the seventh Knotfest in Toluca, Mexico (about an hour's drive west of Mexico City). The band's performance was captured on the just-released "Day Of The Gusano" , but instead of being advertised as a live DVD or concert film, "Gusano" (Spanish for "maggot", a word long ago appropriated by the band to describe its fans) has been described as a "documentary". Don't be misled, however, for around four-fifths of its 90-minute running time, "Gusano" , which was screened in select theaters around the world, shows SLIPKNOT performing a 16-song set before an enormous, passionate crowd. (For reasons unknown, the DVD and Blu-ray editions rearrange the track listing from the audio-only release. That version showcases the group's complete 17-song set in the same order in which it was performed, and omits "People = Shit" .) The remaining quarter-hour or so primarily features snippets of interviews with unmasked band members and a handful of unidentified Mexican fans, with both camps attempting to portray the group's arrival in town as a Really. -
