  • A History of Merchant, Central and Investment Banking Learning
Chapter 2: A History of Merchant, Central and Investment Banking Learning Objectives: To apply the history and evolution of money and banking to comprehension of existing systems To diagnose and calculate seniorage and debasement To recount how conditions drawn from history led to today's instruments and institutions To examine how economic problems lead to banking and capital market innovations To describe how money and banking integrated into the many economies over thousands of years To summarize the many artistic, literary, technological and scientific achievements that were funded or otherwise facilitated by banking To recognize the problems associated with usury in religious, social and economic contexts To express how academic, exploration, technological, trading, religious and other cultural developments contributed to the practice of banking A. Early History of Money In Chapter 1, we briefly discussed the economic roles of a number of types of financial institutions along with their origins. In this chapter, we discuss in greater detail the history of money and banking, beginning with the early history of money and extending through the advent of modern banking in the early 20th century. In later chapters, we will discuss the repeated occurrence and consequences of banking crises and development of banking regulation from a historical perspective. Commodity and Representative Money The earliest forms of money tended to have alternative intrinsic value as commodities. For example, grain-money has been used since the dawn of agriculture. Neolithic peoples in what is now China are believed to have used cowrie (sea snail) shells as money perhaps as long ago as 4,500 years.

  • Early Public Banks
FEDERAL RESERVE BANK of ATLANTA WORKING PAPER SERIES Early Public Banks William Roberds and François R. Velde Working Paper 2014-9 August 2014 Abstract: Publicly owned or commissioned banks were common in Europe from the 15th century. This survey argues that while the early public banks were characterized by great experimentation in their design, a common goal was to create a liquid and reliable monetary asset in environments where such assets were rare or unavailable. The success of these banks was, however, never guaranteed, and even well-run banks could become unstable over time as their success made them susceptible to fiscal exploitation. The popularization of bearer notes in the 18th century broadened the user base for the public banks’ money but was also accompanied by increased fiscal abuse. Wartime demands of the Napoleonic Era resulted in the reorganization or dissolution of many early public banks. A prominent exception was the Bank of England, whose adept management of a fiscally backed money provided a foundation for the development of central banks as they exist today. JEL classification: E58, N13 Key words: central banks, exchange banks, public banks This paper was written for the conference on “Money in the Western Legal Tradition” held at Cambridge in 2012. The authors are grateful to conference participants and to Warren Weber for comments on earlier versions. The authors are also grateful to Anja Amend-Traut and Markus Denzel for making their recently published monographs available for this survey. The views expressed here are the authors’ and not necessarily those of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, or the Federal Reserve System.

ENGLISH GIRONA IN MODERN TIMES FROM WORKSHOP TO MILITARY STRONGHOLD (fourteenth to the eighteenth century) The Girona of modern times was always one of the capitals of the Principality of Catalonia, despite the fact that during the course of this period it diminished in relative importance, at least in terms of population. From the second half of the 17th century onwards the city also became a strategic stronghold, mainly as a result of periodic wars with France. Thus, the bustling city of the 16th century, specializing in the production of woollen fabrics, had by the second half of the 18th century turned into a military capital. From workshop to military stronghold, below we trace this history. View of Girona, anonymous Manuscript map of the River Ter between Bescanó, Saint Gregori and Girona, 1750 Detail of walled Girona (Cartographic Institute of Catalonia) Although an idealized depiction, the author of this view of Girona, from around 1750, defines the most characteristic features of the city's profile in simple terms: the wall, with its succession of gates and bastions asymmetrically distributed along the walled perimeter, the needle tip of the steeple of Sant Feliu Church and the cylindrical shape of the cathedral's bell tower. The same city as always… The size of modern Girona barely increased over three hundred years, and its urban morphology remained more or less the same as it had always been. The city's axes remai- ned its rivers: the Onyar, which separated the sandy area of Mercadal from the higher Old Town around the cathedral; the Galli- gants, which crossed the old district of Sant Pere in a perpendicular direction; and the Ter, which met the Onyar on the outskirts of the city towards Pedret and Pont Major.

Paraules clau: Banca privada, financers, finances públiques, Catalunya baixmedieval, Corona d’Aragó Abstract This paper focuses on money-changers, owners of private money-changing tables (taules de canvi) in Catalonia between approximately 1280 and 1400. It places them among the group of financial agents (especially with regard to public administrations), and it stresses the particularities of the institutions ruled by them, true private banks. Additionally, it includes a first census of over a hundred bankers documented in the Principality of Catalonia during the aforementioned period. Besides remarking some of their shared characteristics, the paper also presents several approaches to conduct in-depth studies of this group.
