Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies. -

Decoding the cultural landscape of Badami - Towards sustainability Pragya Shankar Assistant Professor School of Enviornment and Design Navrachana University, Vadodara [email protected] There exist a great variety of Landscapes that are representative of the different regions of the world. Combined works of nature and humankind, they express a long and intimate relationship between peoples and their natural environment. Cultural landscapes testify to the creative genius, social development and the imaginative and spiritual vitality of humanity. They are part of our collective identity. (UNESCO) Culture is the agent, the natural area is the medium, the cultural landscape the result (Sauer, 1925). Cultural landscapes are as much the expression of culture as the disciplines of arts and architecture. These are reflection of the common existential ideas and represent the relationship of people with the environment. This world view is a people's more or less systematic attempt to make sense of environment. To be livable, nature and society must show order and display a harmonious relationship (Tuan, 1977). The environment has been considered detrimental in shaping of cultures by environmental determinists, whereas according to the ideas of cultural determinism, it is culture which influences the relationship of man with environment. None the less, it is an accepted premise that both, the environment and culture are very closely inter-related and have multifaceted relationship with each other, the original landscape forms the part of transcendental idea and the world view and there are landscapes removed from the original place, but represent elements in similar relationships. Boologarambai, Ph.D. Introduction This paper tries to compare the first grammatical work of Tamil Tolkaappiyam and the first grammatical work of Kannada Kaviraajamaarga. A comparative study of grammars of two different languages helps us to appreciate their commonness and specialty. The main aim of this paper is to bring together these two grammars and briefly see the similarities and differences between them. Even though the two languages belong to the same language group within the same language family, there are some differences. Tolkaappiyam Tolkaappiyam is the earliest available grammar in Tamil. It belongs to third century B.C. There are three main divisions in this grammar. Each division has nine chapters. In total, there are 27 chapters with 1611 nuuRpaa or sutra or aphorisms . Tolkaappiyam is a grammar of both the common usage and the literary usage (vazhakku and ceyyuL). Tolkaappiyar deals not only with phonology, morphology and syntax but also poetics and rhetoric and the way the world is categorized (poruL). -

Department of History Vijaya College, Mulki,India Abstract: Dhruva is one of the greatest monarchs of the Rashtrakuta dynasty and was principally responsible for giving a new trend to the imperial policy of the Rashtrakutas. During his time, there was no power in India to challenge the supremacy of the Rashtrakutas. Index Terms - Dhruva, Rashtrakuta, Southern conquests, Northern expeditions, Great military figure. I. INTRODUCTION Dhruva is one of the most illustrious monorcs of the Rashtrakuta dynasty. His accession to the throne marks a turning point. His reign witnessed certain epoch-making events which raised the dynasty, whose fortunes had sunk low in the previous regime, to the status of a great imperial power, so much so that every contemporary royal house in India was struck with a sense of fear and anxiety. Though his period of rule was not very long, yet it is significant from several points of view. He moved like a whirlwind and conducted lightning campaigns against the Gangas of Talkadu, Pallavas of Kanchi, Chalukyas of Vengi, the Gurjara Pratiharas and the Palas, the last two being the great powers of the north. All these powers were compelled to acknowledge the supremacy of Dhruva and forced to pay tribute to him. Not merely in the domain of military activity, but also in administration and in education he made substantial contribution. It has to be confessed that historical material on the reign of Dhruva is meagre, which makes the task of a historian all the more difficult. -

UNIT – I Sources The Literay Sources Sangam Period The consisted, of Tolkappiyam a Tamil grammar work, eight Anthologies (Ettutogai), the ten poems (Padinen kell kanakku ) the twin epics, Silappadikaram and Manimekalai and other poems. The sangam works dealt with the aharm and puram life of the people. To collect various information regarding politics, society, religion and economy of the sangam period, these works are useful. The sangam works were secular in character. Kallabhra period The religious works such as Tamil Navalar Charital,Periyapuranam and Yapperumkalam were religious oriented, they served little purpose. Pallava Period Devaram, written by Apper, simdarar and Sambandar gave references tot eh socio economic and the religious activities of the Pallava age. The religious oriented Nalayira Tivya Prabandam also provided materials to know the relation of the Pallavas with the contemporary rulers of South India. The Nandikkalambakam of Nandivarman III and Bharatavenba of Perumdevanar give a clear account of the political activities of Nandivarman III. The early pandya period Limited Tamil sources are available for the study of the early Pandyas. The Pandikkovai, the Periyapuranam, the Divya Suri Carita and the Guruparamparai throw light on the study of the Pandyas. The Chola Period The chola empire under Vijayalaya and his successors witnessed one of the progressive periods of literary and religious revival in south India The works of South Indian Vishnavism arranged by Nambi Andar Nambi provide amble information about the domination of Hindu religion in south India.
