DES No. 22 of 2013 PROJECTED POPULATION OF KARNATAKA 2012-2021 (PROVISIONAL) Issued by: Directorate of Economics and Statistics Bangalore 2013 PREFACE The population census provides information on population and its other characteristics. The census being a decennial exercise does not provide the measure of population change from year to year. The measures of fertility and mortality derived from the census are centered on the mid-point of the decade and as such do not provide any change. Population is one of the most important items for which projections are often made. Though projections may not turn to be precise, they are indicative of the future trends and are useful to the demographers, administrators, planners and to the public at large in different ways. Projections of future populations are also required for preparation of five year plans. Academically also these forecasts are of invaluable utility. With this backdrop an attempt has been made to project the Provisional Population in Karnataka by districts and taluks for rural and urban units separately upto the year 2021. In this attempt only towns with a population of one lakh and above have been covered. These projections are based on the Geometric growth rates between 2001 and 2011 censuses. This exercise was carried out by Civil Registration & National Sample Survey Division of this Directorate. The efforts of Staff/Officers in bringing out this report is very much appreciated. Abstract: Bidar district is the home of the Bidriware industry and the very name Bidri is derived from Bidar. This craft was introduced in Bidar during the rule of Bahmanis. Towards the end of the Baridi dynasty in Bidar this craft reached its zenith and a number of outstanding specimens were produced which today enrich some museums in India and abroad. The basic materials required in Bidri industry are zinc, copper, silver and a particle type of earth. The process of production may be divided into four main stages viz. casting, engraving, inlaying and oxidizing.There are five main types of inlay for ornamenting Bidriware objects. The Bidricraft will be marketed through global media. For improving the life of Bidri artisans and for conservation as well as preservation of Bidriware scientific and technical study of Bidriware is a need of modern time. This paper will be beneficial to artists, historians, researchers, marketing agencies, government and policy makers along with scientist.Through technological help preservation and propaganda about art is also possible . Lastly, it is the work of the researcher to focus on scientific and technical thinking of art for it conservation and preservation of art. Wilkinson: Configurations of the Indic States System 63 CONFIGURATIONS OF THE INDIC STATES SYSTEM David Wilkinson In his essay "De systematibus civitatum," Martin Wight sought to clari- fy Pufendorfs concept of states-systems, and in doing so "to formulate some of the questions or propositions which a comparative study of states-systems would examine." (1977:22) "States system" is variously defined, with variation especially as to the degrees of common purpose, unity of action, and mutually recognized legitima- cy thought to be properly entailed by that concept. As cited by Wight (1977:21-23), Heeren's concept is federal, Pufendorfs confederal, Wight's own one rather of mutuality of recognized legitimate independence. Montague Bernard's minimal definition—"a group of states having relations more or less permanent with one another"—begs no questions, and is adopted in this article. Wight's essay poses a rich menu of questions for the comparative study of states systems. -

Dāsa Sāhitya: Some Notes on Early Publications, Commentaries and Concerns1 Abstract: Dāsa Sāhitya is a literary genre in Kannada, beginning to be seen from the late- fifteenth century. Making its mark both in literature and in Indian classical music, Dāsa Sāhitya attracted the attention of missionaries and other colonial functionaries and was one of the first genres to be edited and published in Kannada in the mid-nineteenth century. Very soon, the native editors and publishers started working on the genre. Usually classified under Bhakti literature as part of modern Kannada literature, Dāsa Sāhitya got published by individuals of varying interests. This essay makes a survey of some of the early publications of the genre and attempts to segregate varying concerns and interests within what may be broadly and sometimes, urgently termed as either ‘colonial’ or ‘nationalist’, even as it makes certain interesting observations on the changing phase of the literary culture: from manuscript to print. Key Words: Dāsa Sāhitya, Dāsa, Pada, Kannada, literature, print Dāsa Sāhitya in Kannada seems to be a post late-fifteenth century phenomenon. It is largely perceived as Vaiṣṇava and Mādhva literature, eulogizing Puraṇic gods in the Vaiṣṇava pantheon and is considered part of Bhakti literature in Kannada. Travelling singers of medieval India who had a presence from Rajasthan in the north to north Karnataka in the south; Iyal and Isai traditions of Tamil and the Vārakarī tradition of Maharashtra seem to have had the foundational impacts on the Dāsa Sāhitya tradition apart from its own indigenous Kannada roots. He built a huge empire that extended from north & northwestern India till the Narmada in the South. His capital was Kannauj. His reforms and policies were generous and were always aimed at boosting the peace and prosperity of his people. King Harshavardhana deeds were praised by Chinese Buddhist traveller Xuanzang in his writings. Facts about King Harshavardhana (Reign: 606 A.D to 647 A.D.) Harshavardhana was born in 590 AD to King Prabhakaravardhana of Sthaneshvara (Thanesar, Haryana). He belonged to the Pushyabhuti also called Vardhana dynasty. He was a Hindu who later embraced Mahayana Buddhism. He was married to Durgavati. He had a daughter and two sons. His daughter married a king of Vallabhi whereas his sons were killed by his own minister. King Harshavardhana Ascension After Prabhakaravardhana died, his elder son Rajyavardhana ascended to the throne of Thanesar. Harsha had a sister, Rajyashri who was married to king Grahavarman of Kannauj. Sasanka, the Gauda king killed Grahavarman and kept Rajyashri prisoner. This prompted Rajyavardhana to fight against Sasanka. But Sasanka killed Rajyavardhana. This led the 16-year old Harshavardhana to ascend the throne of Thanesar in 606 AD. He vowed to avenge his brother’s murder and also rescue his sister. For this, he forged an alliance with Bhaskaravarman, the Kamarupa king. Harsha and Bhaskaravarman marched against Sasanka. Ultimately, Sasanka left for Bengal and Harsha became the king of Kannauj also. Empire of King Harshavardhana On acquiring Kannauj, Harsha united the two kingdoms of Thanesar and Kannauj. -

Reviews of Books Ibn Khaldun’s inconsistent scepticism and rationality, rejecting some but not all forms of magic and sorcery, (p. ) coupled with consistent religious faith is the leitmotif of Irwin’s intellectual portrait drawn from “another planet”. But is not this portrait consistent with the world of a medieval thinker? Would not any further rationalism be utter heresy? Ibn Khaldun’s conditional rationality prompts Irwin to join those who reject the view of Ibn Khaldun as ‘precursor’ of modern ideas. In the epilogue, com- ing back to the perspective from “another planet” announced in his introduction, Irwin candidly and refreshingly admits that he could not always understand Ibn Khaldun. Although he was one of the most outstanding figures of his age, Ibn Khaldun’s thoughts remained beyond the grasp of his contempor- aries. Robert Irwin sees him as a strikingly bleak and lonely figure (p. ), standing between the exceptional and the conventional, beyond categorisation. Deyell did not set out to answer this question, but rather to study a series of base gold coins of a post- Kidarite style, showing a stylized king sacrificing at an altar on one side and a seated female deity on the other.1 Sir Alexander Cunningham attributed these coins in to a “Naga” or “Karkotaka” dynasty of Kashmir. -

The term ‘Sanskriti’ has been derived from the root ‘Kri (to do) of Sanskrit language. Three words came from this root ‘Kri; prakriti’ (basic matter or condition), ‘Sanskriti’ (refined matter or condition) and ‘vikriti’ (modified or decayed matter or condition) when ‘prakriti’ or a raw material is refined it becomes ‘Sanskriti’ and when broken or damaged it becomes ‘vikriti’.
