Matisoff, Chair The Kuki-Chin languages constitute one of the most important subgroups of the great Tibeto-Burman family. This dissertation attempts to reconstruct the sound system of the ancestor language, Proto-Kuki-Chin, by comparing the initial consonants, rhymes, and nominal tones of a large number of KC languages. This study of Proto-Kuki-Chin depends primarily on twelve languages: three from the Central Chin group: Mizo (aka Lushai), Hakha Lai, and Falam Lai; four from the Southem- Plains Chin group: Mindat Cho, Daai, Asho (aka Plains Chin), and Khumi; four from the Northern Chin group: Tedim (aka Tiddim), Paite, Thado-Kuki, and Sizang; and finally one from the Maraic group, namely Mara (aka Lakher). Chapter 1 introduces the Kuki-Chin speakers and their geographical locations, and traces the etymologies of the names Kuki and Chin. -

Deka ICAR-ATARI , Zone-III Indian Council of Agricultural Research 2 Umiam, Meghalaya- 793103 3 FORWARD The ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research institute, Zone-III with its headquarters at Umiam, Meghalaya is the nodal institution for monitoring the extension activities conducted by the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in North East Region, which comprises of eight states, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. All these states have the tribal population which gives them the unique identity as compared to the other part of the country. This peculiarity is due to the traditional wealth conserved by the people of this region from ancestors through oral traditions. Folk songs in relation of agriculture are one of the traditional assets for this region. These songs describe the different aspects of nature in general and agriculture in particular for understanding them in a comprehensive way. It simply shows the close liaison of the native people with the natural phenomenon. I appreciate the effort and hardship of the KVK staffs in general and editors of this publication in particular for bringing out such a useful document for the benefit of all the stakeholders working for the prosperity of indigenous people. -

Chhuanawma, Professor, Department of Political Science, Pachhunga University College, Mizoram University, Aizawl, Mizoram: India. Pin: 796005. Abstract Lakher and Pawi, also known respectively as Mara and Lai, are two tribes living in the Indian state of Mizoram, and in the Chin State of Myanmar. The two tribes have many very similar historical and cultural characteristics. Historical and cultural evidences strongly suggest that the Lakher were once a part of the Pawi tribe. Key words Lakher, Mara, Pawi, Lai, ethnic, tribe Introduction 'Lakher' and 'Pawi' are two ethnic groups living in the Indian state of Mizoram. The two are separately recognized as 'tribes' under Scheduled Tribes list in Mizoram, as per the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Lists (Modification) Order, 1956 and as inserted by Act 81 of 1971, Government of India. The Lakher population is concentrated in the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) area, situated in the southernmost part of Mizoram. The Lakher are also found in the Chin State (formerly Chin Hills) of Myanmar (formerly Burma). The Pawi population is concentrated in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) area, also situated in the southernmost part of Mizoram. A much larger Pawi population within the state is however found in other parts of Mizoram outside of LADC. In the Chin State, the Pawi population is generally believed to be the largest of all the ethnic groups. But there are no specific ethnic or tribal population breakups either in Mizoram (India) or the Chin State (Myanmar). -

90 CHAPTER III ETHNIC COMMUNITIES IN SIKKIM: THEIR HISTORY AND IDENTITY Humans as social animals achieve both real and ideal concepts of self partially out of a sense belonging to a group.1 In an occupationally undifferentiated society a sense of social identity vis-a-vis political community rarely result in an antagonistic environs because it provides little basis for divergent concepts of belongingness. On the contrary, a more complex social formation, i.e. pluri-cultural societies, with · their occupational divisions and amalgamation of groups maintaining a sense of diverse origin generally exhibit signs of tension, real or perceived, emanating from an overall sense of belongingness. This happens irrespective of having either an open (Democratic) or closed (Totalitarian/Monarchical) system of political organizations or constitutional system. The process of identity is not ~tatic, but at the same time community's self definition is to be found. Group identity develops through· self-definition and definition by others. The two may be same but at the same time contradictory too. Through the exchanges between self-definition and definition by others community identity emerges. Further, as a dynamic process community identity includes and excludes people as members of the group and non-members/others. Interestingly a particular section may be sometimes included and excluded another time. A section may demand inclusion and may be denied and, in another occasion, a section may emphasize exclusiveness/ separateness and yet may be included. Hence, understanding of community self-definition and self-perception is important. For this, a brief analysis of different ethnic groups and their identity is demanded. -

Abstract Known as 'Chin' in Myanmar,' Pawi' in India and 'Bawm' in Bangladesh, the Lai people form a prominent and significant group among the Kuki-Lushai-Chin peoples of Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh. Their origin is however a mystery. A general believe among the people is that they came from China. Keywords Lai, Chin, Pawi, place of origin, China, Li, Ch'iang, 'Lairam', Middle Kingdom Complex. Introduction The Lai people inhabit the Chin State of Myanmnar, the Indian state of Mizoram, and the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. Besides the three areas of concentration of their population mentioned here, the Lai are also found in other parts of Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh. They are known as 'Chin' in Myanmar, 'Pawi' in India, and 'Bawm' in Bangladesh. In spite of the absence of an established theory regarding the place of origin of the Lai, there is a general belief among the Lai people that their forefathers once lived in China. There are some evidences which suggest that China could be the original homeland of the Lais. This paper attempts to establish that the Lai people originated from China.
