1- The only complete copy known of this striking plate-book, the best visual record of the Spanish Moroccan War

Donon. 28 lithographed plates, of which 24 with color. 14,000 $ First , the best artistic and visual record of the Spanish-Moroccan war, a.k.a. the War of Africa; the conflict began as a boundary issue in the Spanish city of Ceuta, and was fought in the north of Morocco against the Sultan´s army; it ended with the Spanish victory at Tetuan. Astonishingly rare: only two other copies known, both incomplete.

2- The transit of Venus recorded by 18th century Mexico´s most significant scientist, one of three known copies of this rare engraving

Hurus´s was one of the earliest shops of the Iberian Peninsula. To his we owe the Missale Caesaraugustano, and Boccaccio´s De Muelieribus Claris.

Contemporary limp vellum. 16,000 $ An attractive sammelband of two interesting texts which bring together ancient knowledge and imagination, in the same physical condition as a Renaissance reader would have seen it: the first work is the celebrated encyclopaedia by neoplatonist Capella, one of the earliest developers of the system of the seven liberal arts and a fundamental textbook of the Middle Ages, the second is the first edition of Hyginus’ illustrated Fables.

[Catalogues; collection of 286 rare 18th and 19th century Spanish dealers catalogues and lists]. 263 catalogues bound in 8 volumes in half vellum, plus 22 loose catalogues. 40,000 $ The majority are from Madrid booksellers but there are also catalogues from Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Valladolid, amongst other places. There is a wide variety of catalogues: some from famous booksellers as Salvá, the widow of Joaquín Ibarra, Sancha, and cartographer Tomás Mauricio Lopez, to less known booksellers; private catalogues of institutions as the Imprenta Real and the Real Academia de San Fernando.

A work of considerable importance to Spanish humanism; this is the first printing of Oliva´s Dialogo de la dignidad del hombre, a poem reflecting the Renaissance view of man as a second creator, dedicated to Hernan Cortes. “First edition of an Americanum of first importance” (Schab). Provenance: “Convento de San Francisco de México”, the first library of the Americas, created by Zumarraga, first Bishop of Mexico.

12- Very early photographic record of Constantinople, by one of its first photographers, James Robertson, one of the largest albums in terms of Constantinople contents

Each photograph is accompanied on the opposite leaf with a manuscript caption in French of the place recorded. The album was created during Robertson´s (1813-1888) stay in Istanbul, between 1853-1857.

14- Important overview of the Darien Colony, in a sammelband from the Macclesfield Library

Missing two leaves. 5,000 $ First and only edition, very rare, of this comprehensive treatise about the horse, with chapters on their properties, style and performance in bull-fighting, general and practical teachings about it´s behavior, welfare and health.

16- Early caricature of Colombia´s post-colonial life-style; by a famous Colombian artist of the 19th century

Watercolor on paper. 6,000 $ Espinosa Prieto was a Colombian artist, engraver and caricaturist; his reputation grew mainly for his caricatures portraying the most relevant and influent men of the republican elite, as well as the local costumes and way of life of the inhabitants of Bogota. The drawing represents a game being played at a tavern or brothel by military and bourgeois.

17- The first book printed in Spanish about America and the first practical guide to sailing in American waters

21- The second Constitution by an Independent State in the Americas, produce of the first successful slave rebellion

25- Extremely rare 16th century pamphlet detailing the way a witness and an accused must be questioned by the Inquisition

Extremely rare.

28- An unpublished account of an expedition throughout Santo Domingo, illustrated with manuscript maps, bound in contemporary red morocco

This is probably Lescallier´s rarest work, which has remained unpublished to-date.

29- Extremely rare relation of the most destructive earthquake that stroke Manila since the Conquest by the Spanish

32- The magnum opus of Mesa, the most significant naval engagement against Arab forces before Lepanto

Brown crushed morocco, signed Brugalla 1949. 5,000 $ First edition; Mesa was a Spanish Jewish convert, friend of Torquato Tasso and Cervantes. The work narrates the battle of the Navas de Tolosa, known in Arab history as the Battle of Al-Uqab, when King Alfonso VIII of Castille met against the Berber Almohad caliph Muhammad al-Nasir, in the late 12th century.

33- Important Mexican manuscript on the Mexican Real Hacienda, covering Mexican states for the years 1740 to 1744

36- Manuscript ledger registering the marriages of Mexican Indians near Mexico City, with a beautifully illustrated , and in its colonial wallet binding

37- No tax duties for introducing African slaves into the Spanish colonies to the South Sea Company

Mexico. 12,000 $ First edition. By the treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the Spanish monarchy granted a thirty- year contract to the SSC to supply 4800 slaves to the American colonies and goods per year. Moro defends the right of the English South Sea Company to introduce black slaves into Spanish America without paying taxes.

An exceptional, and almost-complete set of the first issues of the Gazeta del Gobierno de Mexico; the official newspaper followed on that founded by Valdes Murguia, editor of the Gazeta de Mexico, which ran from 1784-1809. Very rare, a complete set has never appeared at auction.

39- A remarkable medieval manuscript on Warfare, previously unknown

[Military medieval unrecorded manuscript in French on vellum, previously unkown, with the Cérémonies des Gages des Bataille]. [France, early 15th century]. Contemporary calf. 85,000 $ Previously unknown and unstudied early manuscript about warfare; that of the first text apparently surviving only in this copy and drawing on the personal experience of an unknown commander (perhaps a naval one), who would had seen action in the Hundred Years’ War. The second text, the Cérémonies des Gages des Bataille, is a chivalric manual of warfare drawn from the ordinances of King Philip IV (1268-1314), suppressor of the Knights Templar, expeller of the Jews from France in 1306, and the forger of an alliance with the Mongol Khanates in the Near East against a common enemy in the Mamluk rulers of Egypt.

40- One of the earliest works on hunting and falconry written in Spanish

Contemporary vellum. 14,000 $ Second edition of this exceedingly scarce work on the chase and falconry, one of the earliest and most important of those written in Spanish in the 16th century; the work focuses on the laws of hawking and hunting, it was the first Castilian printed book on hunting and the first to deal with its legal and moral aspects.

41- Anti Jesuitism in the 18th century, rare manuscript sammelband of texts relating to the Jesuits in Mexico in the 17th and 18th century, from the Philips collection

[Palafox y Mendoza, Bishop of Puebla.] A collection of six rare in Spanish relating to Juan de Palafox y Mendoza’s dispute with the Jesuits and the Viceroyalty of New Spain in the second half of the seventeenth century. Contemporary calf. 5,000 $ A full list of documents is available upon request; this is a very appealing manuscript collection of texts about the famous dispute between Palafox and the Jesuits of Mexico.
