Certainly one can say that, with notable exceptions, books produced during the four centuries after the incunabular era fell well short of the level of craftsmanship manifested in printed works created in the 50-year golden period after Gutenberg. William Morris and likeminded aesthetes deplored the impersonal, mechanized process THANK YOU FOR of printing as they found it in the latter part of the 19th century.     INTRODUCTION BYTHE EDITOR HEN Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne- Jones, William Morris, and some fellow-artists painted on the damp walls of the Oxford Un- ion debating hall in 1857, their ignorance of fresco technique led them to produce haunt- ing images of the Middle Ages which, in ghostly fashion, began to fade almost immedi- ately; but the more permanent legacy of this episode was a body of richly revealing anecdotes about the Pre- Raphaelites themselves. Burne-Jones, for example, recalled that Mor- ris was so fanatically precise about the details of medieval costume Figure 1 that he arranged for "a stout little smith" in Oxford to produce a suit of armor which the painters could use as a model. When the basinet arrived, Morris at once tried it on, and Burne-Jones, working high above, looked down and was startled to see his friend "embedded in iron, dancing with rage and roaring inside" because the visor would not lift.1 This picture of Morris imprisoned and blinded by a piece of medie- val armor is an intriguing one: certainly it hints at an interpretation of his career that is not very flattering. But we ought to set alongside it another anecdote, from the last decade of Morris's life, the symbol- ism of which seems equally potent. Early in November 1892, young Sydney Cockerell, recently hired by Morris to catalogue his incunab- ula and medieval manuscripts, spent the entire day immersed in that remote age while studying materials in Morris's library. As evening approached, he emerged again into the nineteenth century (or so he thought) and climbed the staircase of Kelmscott House: "When I went up into the drawing room to say goodnight Morris and his wife were playing at draughts, with large ivory pieces, red and white.

    an introduction to the Eric Gill Special Collection Portrait of Eric Gill (1882-1940) was an English engraver, sculptor, typographer, and writer Eric Gill who lived and worked in and near London. The University of Notre Dame collection includes over 2,000 items of Eric Gill’s work: books, pamphlets, broadsides, prints, greeting cards, calendars, sketches, wood blocks, photographs, and other formats. The Gill Collection also includes many examples of the work by men who worked with or apprenticed with Gill (Hilary Pepler, Philip Hagreen, Joseph Cribb, David Jones, and Desmund Chute), most of the imprints of the Golden Cockerel Press (which produced The Four Gospels engraved by Gill), and an extensive selection of the output from Gill’s own St. Dominic’s Press. There are hundreds of fine art prints and over 100 photographs of Gill’s sculptures. The collection was acquired in 1965 from John Bennett Shaw (Notre Dame alumnus ’37), who purchased it from Evan Gill, Eric’s brother. Since 1965, the collection has been added to selectively. The collection has a large and interdisciplinary audience.     chapter 3 Lost Incunable Editions: Closing in on an Estimate Jonathan Green and Frank McIntyre Imagine, if you will, that you are a lepidopterist stationed in the butterfly-rich environment of a tropical Malaysian island. You hope to determine the number of butterfly species that live on the island, and so you resolve to survey an acre- sized patch of it for a month and record the number of individuals of each spe- cies that you find. At the end of the month, you find that a few species of butterfly are represented by a large number of specimens, while many species are repre- sented by only one or a few specimens. These results lead you to suspect that there remain many species of butterfly on the island that your survey has missed, but how many? And how many more species can you expect to discover with additional months of observation? As your opportunity to spend additional months on a tropical island depends on your presenting a convincing argument to your funding agency, these questions are of some urgency for you. This is a brief statement of what is known as the unseen species problem, which has been an area of intense study both within and well outside of the field of ecology for several decades. The example above concerning Malaysian butterflies is drawn from a pathbreaking article published in 1943 by Ronald Fisher, one of the founders of modern biology and statistics, who proposed statistical methods for estimating the number of unseen butterfly species.1 Since then, the development and implementation of these methods has con- tinued, so that several current statistical software packages can provide both an estimate of the number of missing species and determine the confidence interval of that estimation, that is, the range within which one is reasonably certain the actual number lies.2 In an ideal situation, the number of observed butterfly species will rise with each additional month of observation, but the estimate of total species will change only modestly as the confidence interval 1 R.A.

The Esther Tapestries and the Duke of Burgundy The Duchy of Burgundy, ruled first by Philip the Bold from a branch of the French Valois family, which reigned from 1363 to 1404, was known for its magnificent court cul- ture.(1) The palaces built everywhere within the Duchy were gorgeously adorned and hosted a great number of magnificent jousts, joyous entries, processions, and feasts. They not only provided aesthetic enjoyment for viewers but also impressed them with the great power of the Dukes of Burgundy.(2) Among numerous ornaments displayed at the palaces, large tap- estries woven with gold and silver threads were particularly striking, powerfully conveying their owners’ wealth and authority. One typical example was the set of Alexander Tapes- tries, depicting the life of the ancient ruler Alexander the Great (356 BC-323 BC).(3) Although the set of Alexander Tapestries is no longer complete, it is believed to have con- sisted of six large tapestries, measuring more than eight meters in width. They were fre- quently on display during meetings and feasts held by the third Duke of Burgundy, Philip the Good, who reigned from 1419 to 1467 (see Fig. 8)(4) and his son Charles the Bold, who became the fourth Duke of Burgundy, reigning from 1467 to 1477 (Fig. 9).(5) They won par- ticularly high praise when exhibited at the palace of the Duke of Burgundy in Paris.

Utrecht: Hes & de Graaf Publishers BV, 2004. x + 228 pp. index. append. illus. tbls. bibl. €132.50. ISBN: 90–6194–279–9. The History of the Book is booming these days, as Cyndia Susan Clegg justly observes in a recent review essay: “History of the Book: An Undisciplined Discipline” (RQ 54 [2001] 221–45). Jones’s useful book would fit nicely on the shelf with those reviewed by Clegg — probably next to Brian Richardson’s somewhat meatier and more detailed Printing, Writers and Readers in Renaissance Italy (Cambridge, 1999). While Richardson surveys Italian printing through a wide lens that takes in its technology, finances, and audience, as well as its total production through the sixteenth century, Jones focuses on the Latin and Greek texts printed from 1465 to 1500, which constitute only about 6% of the books of the incunable period (9).

    Title Page. Typography, Illustration and Narration in Three Novels by Alasdair Gray: Lanark, 1982, Janine and Poor Things. Craig Linwood Bachelor of Arts (Honours) School of Humanities Arts, Education and Law Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2017 Abstract. The impetus of the thesis emerged through an academic interest in how experimental uses of typography and illustration functioned as a method of narration within literature. This was followed by investigations into the use of typography and illustration yielded that while there is a growing field of literary study examining non-linguistic elements within narratives, there are few studies into typography and illustration and how an author utilises and develops them as a method of narration. In light of this, this thesis examines attempts to expand upon the act of narration through the use of typography and illustration in both experimental and common forms. This is focused through Scottish artist Alasdair Gray and three of his novels: Lanark: A Life in Four Books, 1982, Janine and Poor Things. While Gray’s novels are contemporary his use of typography and illustration engages in wider print cultures that facilitated experiment into literature involving the manipulation of typography, illustration and the traditions of narrative. Experimentation in literature from 1650 to 1990, be it through illustration, typography or the composition of narrative, often emerged when printing practice and its product were no longer seen as efficient at communicating to modernising audiences. This act often coincided with larger changes within print cultures that affected laws, politics, the means of distribution, views of design i and methods of distribution.
