The Great Depression lasted throughout this decade and affected countries around the world. International trade plummeted by two thirds. Canadian heavy industry, as well as industries like logging, mining and agriculture were hit particularly hard. Joblessness soared to 30% in Canada, and up to 33% in some countries. The decade marked the rise in totalitarian authorities, leading to the rise of Hitler’s Germany and the beginning of WW II in 1939. It also marked advances in new technologies, such as radio, and commercial international air travel. The number of cars sold in Canada in the 1930s was approximately 760,000. (108 words)
