  • Welsh Disestablishment: 'A Blessing in Disguise'
Welsh disestablishment: ‘A blessing in disguise’. David W. Jones The history of the protracted campaign to achieve Welsh disestablishment was to be characterised by a litany of broken pledges and frustrated attempts. It was also an exemplar of the ‘democratic deficit’ which has haunted Welsh politics. As Sir Henry Lewis1 declared in 1914: ‘The demand for disestablishment is a symptom of the times. It is the democracy that asks for it, not the Nonconformists. The demand is national, not denominational’.2 The Welsh Church Act in 1914 represented the outcome of the final, desperate scramble to cross the legislative line, oozing political compromise and equivocation in its wake. Even then, it would not have taken place without the fortuitous occurrence of constitutional change created by the Parliament Act 1911. This removed the obstacle of veto by the House of Lords, but still allowed for statutory delay. Lord Rosebery, the prime minister, had warned a Liberal meeting in Cardiff in 1895 that the Welsh demand for disestablishment faced a harsh democratic reality, in that: ‘it is hard for the representatives of the other 37 millions of population which are comprised in the United Kingdom to give first and the foremost place to a measure which affects only a million and a half’.3 But in case his audience were insufficiently disheartened by his homily, he added that there was: ‘another and more permanent barrier which opposes itself to your wishes in respect to Welsh Disestablishment’, being the intransigence of the House of Lords.4 The legislative delay which the Lords could invoke meant that the Welsh Church Bill was introduced to parliament on 23 April 1912, but it was not to be enacted until 18 September 1914.

  • Anic Newsletter 22 November 2010
ANiC Newsletter 22 November 2010 Handle with prayer News – ANiC and AEN Welcome Mill Bay church plant! Christ Church of the Valley (Mill Bay, BC) is ANiC’s 40 th official church plant/parish. The new congregation is lead by the Rev Andrew Hewlett – one of our Morning Prayer preachers at Synod. BC Court of Appeal gives mixed decision The BC Court of Appeal issued its decision from the September 13-16 hearing, agreeing with four Vancouver area ANiC parishes on issues of law, but still dismissing their appeal. The parishes, St John’s (Vancouver), St Matthews (Abbotsford), Good Shepherd (Vancouver), and St Matthias & St Luke’s (Vancouver), had appealed a 25 November 2009 decision of Mr Justice Stephen Kelleher awarding beneficial ownership of church properties to the Diocese of New Westminster in the case involving the split in the Anglican Church. The Diocese of New Westminster’s counter appeal of Mr Justice Kelleher’s decision granting a bequest (worth approx. $2M) to the ANiC congregation of the Church of the Good Shepherd was also dismissed. Special Counsel Cheryl Chang says: “In my view, the court did not give due consideration to some critical evidence on issues of doctrine, Anglican hierarchy and authority. Mdm Justice Newbury states (at para 75), “it is antithetical to the nature of Anglicanism to contemplate “Anglican ministry” in a parish that has withdrawn from the authority of its diocese and bishop”. However, this ignores the Windsor Report which stated clearly and unequivocally, in reference to this diocese and bishop, that it was more antithetical to Anglicanism for a bishop and diocese to act “unilaterally… in breach of the legitimate application of the Christian faith as the churches of the Anglican Communion have received it ”.

CHURCH OF IRELAND PRESS OFFICE Church of Ireland House, 61 – 67 Donegall Street, Belfast BT1 2QH www.ireland.anglican.org http://twitter.com/churchofireland Tuesday 17 July 2012 From The Most Revd Alan Harper, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland and co-signatories as listed: Dear Secretary General, We refer to the continuing plight of the residents of Camp Ashraf/Liberty and wish to express deepening concern about the worsening humanitarian situation confronting many defenceless people. We are particularly alarmed by recent reports of a press conference recently held by high ranking officials of the State Department of the United States of America in which it appeared that the residents of Ashraf and the leadership of the PMOI were threatened with armed intervention risking a potential massacre on or after July 20 2012. We strongly condemn the threat of force or the use of force directed towards the people of Camp Ashraf whose status as refugees has been recognised by the United Nations. We therefore call upon you, Secretary General, and Secretary of State Clinton immediately to intervene. Iraq must be pressed to abide by its international obligations and accord full respect to the human rights of Iranian refugees in Iraq. It is wholly inappropriate to blame the victims of oppression for the crimes of their oppressors as appears to be the position adopted by the two high ranking US officials. We note that a similar rationale was offered for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, on the grounds that it is appropriate that one man should die on behalf of the people.

  • Faith Leaders' Open Letter to the Prime Minister
http://interfaithrefugeeinitiative.org/ We are leaders from Britain’s major faiths: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian. All our faiths compel us to affirm the dignity of all human beings and to offer help to anyone in need. As people of faith, we call on your Government urgently to revise its policy towards refugees. The best of this country is represented by the generosity, kindness, solidarity and decency that Britain has at many times shown those fleeing persecution, even at times of far greater deprivation and difficulty than the present day. We rejoice in the mosaic of different faiths and British communities that we now represent. We are proud that in May 2016, in a survey by Amnesty International, 83% of Britons said they would welcome refugees into their neighbourhoods and households. In the face of the unfolding human catastrophe, there are immediate and viable steps that the Government can take to offer sanctuary to more refugees. We call on you to create safe, legal routes of travel, for example by adopting fair and humane family reunion policies for refugees. Under the present immigration rules, a British doctor of Syrian origin could not bring her parents from a refugee camp in Lebanon – even though they were refugees and she could support and house them. A Syrian child who arrived alone in the UK could not bring his parents from a refugee camp in Jordan – even if the child were recognised a refugee and even though his parents were themselves refugees. Families in these situations can currently be reunited only by resorting to desperately unsafe irregular journeys, sometimes ending in avoidable tragedies.

  • Cycle of Prayer 19 August 2018 - 12 January 2019
Cycle of Prayer 19 August 2018 - 12 January 2019 Diocese of Chester Receive the daily Cycle of Prayer on: www.facebook.com/dioceseofchester www.twitter.com/chesterdiocese Key: C = Clergy LM = Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) (Pastoral Worker) (Youth Worker) Diocesan entries from the Anglican Cycle of Prayer are in italics. Foreword Being in the presence of God doesn’t always come easily. There may be times in our lives when we feel a strong sense of God’s presence and other times when God seems some distance away. On the occasions when I feel a distance from God, preparing to be in the presence of Him has been helpful. Most recently, I led a prayer session in the chapel at Church House. I had been and continue to be concerned for the amount of conflict in the world, and therefore chose to focus my prayer session on peace. At the commencement of prayers, I presented photographs from scenes of violence, war, refugees, asylum seekers, victims of modern-day slavery, and world leaders, passing each photograph around the group to enable participants to digest the content and reflect on the emotions evoked. Those photographs were then placed on the altar in the chapel. I then gave each person a small globe, which fitted neatly into the palm of each hand, invited participants to close their eyes as I attempted to lead each member of the group on a journey to meet our Lord, using visualisation and meditation techniques, thus providing the preparation necessary for discourse between them and Jesus. I once read that prayer can change the person praying because whilst being in God’s presence we lay before Him our complete self.
