Partly copies. Partly typewritten, signed and printed. The collection includes papers of government, ecclesiastical and educational commissions and committees on which Mansbridge served, material relating to the foundation of the W.E.A. in 1903 and its subsequent expansion in England and overseas, and to other organisations founded by Mansbridge, the National Central Library (1916), the World Association for Adult Education (1918), the Seafarers' Education Service (1919), and the British Institute of Adult Education (1921). Mansbridge's research, publications and lectures are represented by drafts, notes and correspondence, including material assembled for a projected biography of his personal friend, Charles Gore, Bishop of Oxford. Amongst the family papers are illustrated journals kept by his son, the artist John Mansbridge, as a child. The Mansbridge Papers were formerly held by the National Central Library which, in 1973, joined with the library departments of the British Museum, the National Lending Library for Science and Technology and subsequently the British National Bibliography to form the British Library. They were transferred to the Department of Manuscripts in 1976 and incorporated in Oct. 1988. Paper. One hundred and seventy-four volumes. British Library arrangement. A.
