“For when established identities become outworn or unfinished ones threaten to remain incomplete, special crises compel men to wage holy wars, by the cruellest means, against those who seem to question or threaten their unsafe ideological bases.” Erik Erikson (1956), “The Problem of Ego Identity”, p. 114 “In games it’s very difficult to portray complex human relationships. Likewise, in movies you often flit between action in various scenes. That’s very difficult to do in games, as you generally play a single character: if you switch, it breaks immersion. The fact that most games are first-person shooters today makes that clear. Stories in which the player doesn’t inhabit the main character are difficult for games to handle.” Hideo Kojima Simon Parkin (2014), “Hideo Kojima: ‘Metal Gear questions US dominance of the world”, The Guardian iii AGRADECIMENTOS Por começar quero desde já agradecer o constante e imprescindível apoio, compreensão, atenção e orientação dos Professores Jean Rabot e Clara Simães, sem os quais este trabalho não teria a fruição completa e correta. Nyckelord: Impasse-driven

  • 056 – New Puzzle Videogames — 3/4
056 – New Puzzle videogames — 3/4 Here, a succinct review of different types of puzzle videogames published between 2001 and 2020. Not in chronological order. Single character control ● Antichamber – 2013 A first-person puzzle-platform game released for Microsoft Windows, Linux and OS X. Many of the puzzles are based on phenomena that occur within impossible objects created by the game engine, such as passages that lead the player to different locations depending on which way they face, and structures that seem otherwise impossible within normal three- dimensional space. The game includes elements of psychological exploration through brief messages of advice to help the player figure out solutions to the puzzles as well as adages for real life. The player controls the unnamed protagonist from a first- person perspective, in an environment full of obstacles. Upon completing a core set of puzzles, the player can access the exit door, upon which he starts to chase down a black cloudlike shape, using all the solving techniques learned before. Eventually he is able to capture the cloud as a black cube and enter a final, more expansive area, where the shape becomes a waiting shell. The shell creates a structure around it (similar to the game's logo) and sucks everything around it into its center, sending the screen to black and ending the game. ● Bobby Carrot – 2004 A video game series developed for iOS and as a WiiWare. The object of the game is to collect all of the carrots in an area and reach a point on the map that progresses the player to the next level.

  • A Procedural Method for Automatic Generation of Spelunky Levels
A Procedural Method for Automatic Generation of Spelunky Levels Walaa Baghdadi1, Fawzya Shams Eddin1, Rawan Al-Omari1, Zeina Alhalawani1, Mohammad Shaker2 and Noor Shaker3 1Information Technology Engineering of Damascus, Damascus, Syria 2Joseph Fourier University, Grenoble, France 3IT University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark walaabaghdadi, fawziashamseddin91, rawan.alomari91, zeina.helwani, [email protected], [email protected] Abstract. Spelunky is a game that combines characteristics from 2D platform and rogue-like genres. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary search-based ap- proach for the automatic generation of levels for such games. A genetic algorithm is used to generate new levels according to aesthetic and design requirements. A graph is used as a genetic representation in the evolution process to describe the structure of the levels and the connections between the rooms while an agent- based method is employed to specify the interior design of the rooms. The results show that endless variations of playable content satisfying predefined difficulty requirements can be efficiently generated. The results obtained are investigated through an expressivity analysis framework defined to provide thorough insights of the generator’s capabilities. 1 Introduction Procedural Content Generation (PCG) is receiving increasing attention due to the ad- vantages it provides in terms of speeding up the content generation process, enabling on-line generation, reducing the development budget and facilitating the creation of endless content variations [1]. Furthermore, since most PCG methods are based on ex- tensive search in the content space [2], it is likely that utilising PCG approaches for generating content will yield novel solutions that can be directly used in the game [3, 4] or employed as a form of inspiration for human designers.

HOW TO PLAY WITH MAPS by Ross Thorn Department of Geography, UW-Madison A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (Geographic Information Science and Cartography) at the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN–MADISON 2018 i Acknowledgments I have so many people to thank for helping me through the process of creating this thesis and my personal development throughout my time at UW-Madison. First, I would like to thank my advisor Rob Roth for supporting this seemingly crazy project and working with me despite his limited knowledge about games released after 1998. Your words of encouragement and excitement for this project were invaluable to keep this project moving. I also want to thank my ‘second advisor’ Ian Muehlenhaus for not only offering expert guidance in cartography, but also your addictive passion for games and their connection to maps. You provided endless inspiration and this research would not have been possible without your support and enthusiasm. I would like to thank Leanne Abraham and Alicia Iverson for reveling and commiserating with me through the ups and downs of grad school. You both are incredibly inspirational to me and I look forward to seeing the amazing things that you will undoubtedly accomplish in life. I would also like to thank Meghan Kelly, Nick Lally, Daniel Huffman, and Tanya Buckingham for creating a supportive and fun atmosphere in the Cartography Lab. I could not have succeeded without your encouragement and reminder that we all deserve to be here even if we feel inadequate. You made my academic experience unforgettable and I love you all.
