Anderson August 2017 © 2017 i EGYPTIAN LABOR CORPS: LOGISTICAL LABORERS IN WORLD WAR I AND THE 1919 EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION Kyle J. Anderson, Ph. D. Cornell University 2017 This is a history of World War I in Egypt. But it does not offer a military history focused on generals and officers as they strategized in grand halls or commanded their troops in battle. Rather, this dissertation follows the Egyptian workers and peasants who provided the labor that built and maintained the vast logistical network behind the front lines of the British war machine. These migrant laborers were organized into a new institution that redefined the relationship between state and society in colonial Egypt from the beginning of World War I until the end of the 1919 Egyptian Revolution: the “Egyptian Labor Corps” (ELC). I focus on these laborers, not only to document their experiences, but also to investigate the ways in which workers and peasants in Egypt were entangled with the broader global political economy. The ELC linked Egyptian workers and peasants into the global political economy by turning them into an important source of logistical laborers for the British Empire during World War I. The changes inherent in this transformation were imposed on the Egyptian countryside, but workers and peasants also played an important role in the process by creating new political imaginaries, influencing state policy, and fashioning new and increasingly violent repertoires of contentious politics to engage with the ELC.

Lors du conseil de révision (classe 1904), il a déclaré résider à Cazères et être étudiant. Il avait les cheveux châtain clair, les yeux gris bleu, le front découvert, le nez fort et le visage ovale. Il mesurait 1.67 m. Il avait un degré d’instruction de 2. Engagé volontaire pour 4 ans, mis en route le 16 février 1903, arrivé au corps du 10° régiment de Hussards et hussard de 2° classe le dit jour. Nommé Brigadier le 18 septembre 1904. Nommé Brigadier-fourrier le 14 juin 1905. Nommé Maréchal des logis le 23 septembre 1905. Il a eu des démêlés avec la justice militaire : cassé de son grade et remis 2° Chasseurs le 20 avril 1906. Désaffecté de la cavalerie en exécution de l’article 2, passé dans la réserve de l’armée active le 8 juillet 1907. Certificat de bonne conduite refusé. Se trouvant au Maroc au moment de la mobilisation générale suite à décret du 1ier août 1914, affecté à la 6° batterie coloniale d’artillerie à Marrakech (Maroc). La « pacification » du Maroc, appelée aussi campagne du Maroc, est une conquête militaire et politique française amorcée sous la responsabilité de Hubert Lyautey, alors général, et pendant le règne de Moulay Abdelaziz : dès 1904 dans les confins algéro-marocains ou dès 1907, si l'on prend comme point de départ l'occupation d'Oujda et du territoire des Bni Snassen.

It is not a study of the Negro in the French colonies or of colonial conditions, for that is a different story. Occasion­ ally, however, reference to colonial happenings is brought in as necessary to set forth the background. The author has tried assiduously to restrict his attention to those of whose Negroid blood he could be certain, but whenever the distinction has been significant, he has considered as mulattoes all those having any mixture of Negro and white blood.

    LES TROIS MANGIN par M. HUBERT SAUR J'ai appris fortuitement, au cours du mois de mai dernier, que la plaque de marbre avait été détruite, qui avait été apposée après la première guerre de 1914-1918, et après la victoire à laquelle il avait si largement contribué, sur la maison natale à Sarrebourg, de Charles Mangin, le créateur de l'Armée Noire, le vainqueur de Douaumont, général d'armée. Cette plaque avait été inaugurée en 1923, sur une maison appartenant actuellement à M. Robert Morin, et l'on avait alors utilisé, en la retournant, une plaque qui commémorait le bref passage à Sarrebourg, en 1870, du Kronprinz de Prusse ; il avait passé la nuit dans l'ancien hôtel de ville, à côté du collège, et, sauf erreur de ma part, dans une rue qui s'appelle maintenant avenue de la Victoire, celle de 1918 ! Une très brève inscription indiquait : « Dans cette maison est né le général Mangin, le six juillet 1866 ». En 1940, après notre défaite, cette mlention historique est effacée par l'enlèvement de la plaque, qui est entreposée dans le grenier du bureau de la place allemande. Elle n'a pu être retrouvée. Je n'ai pas à rappeler ici les titres du général Mangin, sa statue orne une place de Metz, où il devait entrer à la tête des troupes françaises en novembre 1918, entrée triomphale, dont un accident de cheval survenu la veille le prive malencontreusement. J'aurai peut-être l'occasion de revenir sur la liste de ces titres et de citer quelques faits qui m'ont été confiés par un officier qui servit alors assez longuement sous ses ordres.

    The Champion of North African Independence: The Life of Rabah Oussidhoum Hugh Goffinet For more than three-quarters of a century, the story of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War has captured the imagination of historians. The thousands of volunteers from around the globe who courageously offered their lives to defend the Spanish Republic have been featured in countless books, articles, and essays. To the detriment of historical accuracy, historiography devoted a disproportionate degree of attention to volunteers from Anglophone nations. This disparate representation of the International Brigades skews our perception of the geodemographic diversity among volunteers. As a result, volunteers like Rabah Oussidhoum fell through the cracks of historical memory. Oussidhoum exemplifies those who admirably supported the Republican cause but did not conform to the perceived demography of an international volunteer. Rabah Oussidhoum was born on November 24, 1903, in the Kabylie region of Northern Algeria.1 He was first employed as a metal worker before leaving his Atlas Mountain home to serve in the French Army during the Rif War.2 Oussidhoum rose through the ranks and became a non-commissioned officer tasked with commanding machine gunners. Despite being an Algerian native in the French Army, Oussidhoum was not alone. The French Army fighting in the Rif heavily relied on North African Soldiers. As in the previous meetings, you will find in it keynote lectures, organized sessions, individual papers that we have grouped into different sessions, round tables and posters. A new category of activity, “Dialogues”, has been added, and we have put a special emphasis on interdisciplinary sessions. Preparing this program, we faced a major source of satisfaction, but also of difficulties: the huge number of scholars who intended to attend this meeting, in fact more than 600! We had to abandon our initial project to reduce the number of sessions running in parallel. Nevertheless, we tried to avoid as much as possible that sessions on similar topics take place during the same time slot, but whatever our efforts were, many of you will probably feel frustrated to have to choose between equally interesting lectures. We apologize for that inconvenience: consider that this frustration is the price to pay for the wide attendance! The proximity of the different lecture rooms will probably partially palliate this problem. Have a nice, friendly and intellectually fruitful meeting!
