Lower and Middle Jurassic ammonoids of the Shemshak Group in Alborz, Iran and their palaeobiogeographical and biostratigraphical importance. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 53 (2): 237–260. The Shemshak Group at Shahmirzad (northern Iran) is characterized by the most frequent and extensive marine intercala− tions and contains the most abundant and diverse ammonite faunas hitherto known from the Lower and lower Middle Ju− rassic strata of the Alborz Range. So far, 62 ammonite taxa have been recorded from this area, including 25 taxa from ear− lier studies. The taxa belong to the families Cymbitidae, Echioceratidae, Amaltheidae, Dactylioceratidae, Hildoceratidae, Graphoceratidae, Hammatoceratidae, Erycitidae, and Stephanoceratidae with the new species Paradumortieria elmii and Pleydellia (P.?) ruttneri. The fauna represents the Late Sinemurian, Late Pliensbachian, Toarcian, Aalenian, and Early Bajocian. Palaeobiogeographically, it is closely related to the Northwest European (Subboreal) Province, and exhibits only minor relations with the Mediterranean (Tethyan) Province. • Late Triassic-Early Jurassic Calcareous Nannofossils of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia
Late Triassic-Early Jurassic Calcareous Nannofossils of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia PAUL R. BOWN Dqinrfiiteiifof Geological Sciences, Micropalaeontology Unit, University College London, Gower Street, London WClE 6BT, U.K. ABSTRACT 5diments of the Kunga and Maude groups (Early Norian-Aalenian) from the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, have yielded the first records of early Mesozoic calcareousnannofossils in North America. These occurrences are the only record of Triassic nannofossils away from the recent discoveries in the Tethyan area (Austria,Indonesia, and the northwestern Australian margin). The nannofossil assemblages from the Queen Charlotte Islands are generally poor to moderately preserved, with species diversities typical for this time interval (2-10 species). The assemblages are comparable to those from northwest Europe, for the Lower Jurassic, and to those from Austria, Indonesia, and the Australian margin, for the Upper Triassic. They show compatible stratigraphicalranges, allowing the applicationof existingbiostratigraphical zonations. Palaeobiogeographical interpretations are inconclusive and fail to positively confirm a low latitude (Tethyan) position for the Queen Charlotte Islands, as indicated by macrofossil data. However, Triassic nannofossil assemblages have yet to be described from high palaeolatitude locations. In addition, certain features of the Lower Jurassicassemblages may indicate Tethyan affinitiesbut also distinguishthese assemblages from those which have been previously documented. These features include the absence of Schizosphnerelln piinctulata, whichoccursabundantlyinthecircum-Mediterraneanregionandwas previously thought to be “cosmopolitan“ in distribution; and the absence of Mitrolithus jansae which characterizes “Tethyan” assemblages in the circum-Mediterranean area. The Queen Charlotte Islands results are com- pared with new nannofossil data from Argentina, Tmor and North America. I. Micropalaeontol., 11 (2):177- 188, December 1992.

  • Primary Structure of the Connecting Ring of Ammonoids and Its Preservation
Primary structure of the connecting ring of ammonoids and its preservation CYPRIAN KULICKI, KAZUSHIGE TANABE, and NEIL H. LANDMAN The most distinctive and important element of the hydrostatic The mineral segments fossilize comparatively well, preserv− organ of ammonoids and nautiloids is the siphuncular tube. It ing the shape and ultrastructural details during diagenesis and consists of mineral and organic segments (so−called connect− only the original metastable mineral, aragonite, changes into ing rings). The connecting ring of ammonites never preserves stable calcite in some cases. The connecting rings of ammonoids its original organic matter in the mineralized state, usually have usually been phosphatised with francolite (Andalib 1972; having undergone diagenetic phosphatisation, more rarely, Hewitt and Westermann 1983; and the authors’ own observa− calcification, or even complete loss. Our knowledge about its tions). The ontogenetically newest sections of the connecting original ultrastructure is based upon comparison with Recent rings are usually not preserved. Only in exceptionally well−pre− Nautilus and phosphatised or calcified ammonite fossils. We served phylloceratids, a fully preserved siphuncular tube can be show that depending on the taphonomic history, both calcium observed in the last phragmocone chamber and in the living phosphate and calcite can participate in the diagenesis of the chamber. In the case of a representative of the Ammonitida, connecting ring wall. Under standard light microscopy, the Damesites, the part protruding into the body chamber is a very phosphatised elements are indistinguishable from the calcified elongated prochoanitic septal neck (Tanabe et al. 2005). In case ones. Both are dark brown in colour, due to an excess of car− of other Phylloceratida (Tanabe et al.
