Somali Proverb In 1992, the United States basked in the glow of its recent military and political victory in Iraq. Washington had successfully orchestrated a coalition of nations, including Arabic states, to liberate Kuwait from Saddam Hussein. The US administration was also celebrating the fall of the Soviet Union and the bright future of President George H.W. Bush’s “New World Order.” The fear of a nuclear catastrophe seemed remote given the international growth of democracy. With the United States now as the sole global superpower, some in the US government felt that it now had the opportunity, will, and capability to reshape the world by creating democratic states around the globe.

Black Hawk Down A Story of Modern War by Mark Bowden, 1951- Published: 1999 J J J J J I I I I I Table of Contents Dedication & The Assault Black Hawk Down Overrun The Alamo N.S.D.Q. Epilogue Sources Acknowledgements J J J J J I I I I I For my mother, Rita Lois Bowden, and in memory of my father, Richard H. Bowden It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting the ultimate practitioner. Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian The Assault 1 At liftoff, Matt Eversmann said a Hail Mary. He was curled into a seat between two helicopter crew chiefs, the knees of his long legs up to his shoulders. Before him, jammed on both sides of the Black Hawk helicopter, was his „chalk,“ twelve young men in flak vests over tan desert camouflage fatigues. He knew their faces so well they were like brothers. The older guys on this crew, like Eversmann, a staff sergeant with five years in at age twenty-six, had lived and trained together for years. Some had come up together through basic training, jump school, and Ranger school. They had traveled the world, to Korea, Thailand, Central America … they knew each other better than most brothers did. They‘d been drunk together, gotten into fights, slept on forest floors, jumped out of airplanes, climbed mountains, shot down foaming rivers with their hearts in their throats, baked and frozen and starved together, passed countless bored hours, teased one another endlessly about girlfriends or lack of same, driven out in the middle of the night from Fort Benning to retrieve each other from some diner or strip club out on Victory Drive after getting drunk and falling asleep or pissing off some barkeep.

  • Black Hawk Down: a Story of Modern
CHAPTER 1: HAIL MARY, THEN DOOM STAFF SGT. Matt Eversmann's lanky frame was fully extended on the rope for what seemed too long on the way down. Hanging from a hovering Blackhawk helicopter, Eversmann was a full 70 feet above the streets of Mogadishu . His goggles had broken, so his eyes chafed in the thick cloud of dust stirred up by the bird's rotors. It was such a long descent that the thick nylon rope burned right through the palms of his leather gloves. The rest of his Chalk, his squad, had already roped in. Nearing the street, through the swirling dust below his feet, Eversmann saw one of his men stretched out on his back at the bottom of the rope. He felt a stab of despair. Somebody's been shot already! He gripped the rope hard to keep from landing on top of the guy. It was Pvt. Todd Blackburn, at 18 the youngest Ranger in his Chalk, a kid just months out of a Florida high school. He was unconscious and bleeding from the nose and ears. The raid was barely under way, and already something had gone wrong. It was just the first in a series of worsening mishaps that would endanger this daring mission. For Eversmann, a five-year veteran from Natural Bridge, Va. , leading men into combat for the first time, it was the beginning of the longest day of his life. Just 13 minutes before, three miles away at the Ranger's base on the Mogadishu beach, Eversmann had said a Hail Mary at liftoff.

Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randy Shughart—who sacrificed their own lives to save others during the October 3, 1993 Battle of Mogadishu—as they appeared on the cover of the Fall 1994 issue of NCO Journal. Online via the Department of Defense. Effective leadership wins battles, but personnel have to be properly equipped. Today, Rangers and Delta Force commandos are still sent into harm’s way, fighting terrorism and doing what their country asks of them. Washington has learned lessons from the Battle of Mogadishu in which so many people were killed and wounded: Rangers receive more training than they did before, including urban warfare. Soldiers simulate actual battlefield combat at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. Better technology (such as personal combat computers and drones which patrol for thirty-six straight hours) help to keep soldiers safe. The lessons of Mogadishu, which benefit today’s fighting men and women, came at a price. That price was paid both by those who were injured and by those who died. Three survivors of the Mogadishu battle talk about what happened (and expound on the lessons which were learned as a result). Col. (ret) Larry Perino, Col. (ret) Lee VanArsdale and Master Sgt.

THE REAL HEROES From The United States Army in Somalia 1992-1994, released by the U.S. Army Center of Military History, this drawing is entitled “On the Alert.” By Jeffrey Manuszak, the scene depicts “boots on the ground,” in Mogadishu, and appears at page 17 of the work. Circling above, the men on board "Super 62" could tell that Mike Durant and his crew were in serious trouble. Two experienced Delta Force snipers, Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon, wanted to help out. They knew, of course, that theirs could be a suicide mission. They descended the rope anyway. Shughart and Gordon saved Durant's life, but it was not long before they were both dead. In a shocking display of mob behavior, Somalis dragged Gordon's body through the streets of Mogadishu. Americans, at home, later watched the scene on the evening news. Mike Durant was sure he was going to die. The mob would have killed him but for the intervention of Yousef Dahir Mo’Alim, a local Somali militiaman who thought Durant was worth more alive than dead. The rest of the American troops would now face what no one would have earlier believed. As Tim Wilkinson later said, "We stumbled into a hornet's nest." CLINT BOWYER PEAK Coolant & Antifreeze Joins Bowyer for Special Weekend KANNAPOLIS, North Carolina (May 20, 2019) – Clint Bowyer plans to rest, drink lots of water and prepare for a long, hot race late Sunday afternoon at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway when the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series holds its longest event of the season – the Coca-Cola 600. With temperatures expected to touch the 97-degree mark Sunday in North Carolina, it’s appropriate Bowyer’s No. 14 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) will carry the decals of PEAK Coolant & Antifreeze in the 600-mile race. He thinks seeing his car on the track will be a good reminder for race fans to prepare for the hot weather, just like the drivers and race teams. “What a weekend for PEAK Coolant & Antifreeze to make its debut on our Mustang,” Bowyer said. “I’m willing to bet, among the thousands of cars this weekend in the heat and humidity at Charlotte and with the hot weather all over the country, someone is going to wish they had put PEAK Coolant & Antifreeze in their car. If you’re going home and you see someone with their hood up on the side of the road, you’ll know they didn’t.” Bowyer hopes the weather won’t lead to any mechanical issues on the racetrack as he tries to win one of the sport’s crown jewels. Sunday marks the greatest day of the year in motorsports with the running of the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500, and the 600.
