Adler, Guy Bar-Oz, Anna Belfer-Cohen, and Ofer Bar-Yosef Over the past several decades a variety of models have been proposed to explain perceived behavioral and cognitive differences between Neanderthals and modern humans. A key element in many of these models and one often used as a proxy for behavioral “modernity” is the frequency and nature of hunting among Palaeolithic populations. Here new archaeological data from Ortvale Klde, a late Middle–early Upper Palaeolithic rockshelter in the Georgian Republic, are considered, and zooar- chaeological methods are applied to the study of faunal acquisition patterns to test whether they changed significantly from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic. -

Iñigo ZUBEROGOITIA* RESUMEN Desde 1993 venimos realizando el Atlas de Aves nidificantes de Bizkaia. En este artículo aparece una pequeña parte del trabajo, co- rrespondiente a los passeriformes considerados como reproductores escasos en la provincia. Se citan por primera vez 5 especies (Estornino negro, Carricerín común, Mosquitero musical, Colirrojo real, Piquituerto), y se amplían las áreas de distribución de otras 13 (Alondra Común, Avión roquero, Bisbita campestre, Bisbita alpino, Alcaudón real, Curruca rabilarga, Curruca cabecinegra, Roquero solita- rio, Zorzal charlo, Picogordo, Verderón serrano, Lúgano, Escribano palustre). Permitiendo conocer algo más sobre la ecología de estas es- pecies. SUMMARY We are doing the Atlas of breeding Birds of Biscay since 1993. In this paper we show a little part of the results, belong to the rare bre- eding passeriforms of Biscay. We found five new species (Spotless Starling, Sedge Warbler, Willow Warbler, Redstart, Crossbill) and we extend de distribution areas of other 13 species (Skylark, Crag Martin, Tawny Pipit, Water Pipit, Great Grey Shrike, Dartford Warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Blue Rockthrush, Mistle Thrush, Hawfinch, Citrii Finch, Siskin, Reed Bunting). Wind Farms and Mires in the Basque Country and North-West Navarra, Spain
Wind farms and mires in the Basque Country and north-west Navarra, Spain P. Heras and M. Infante Álava Museum of Natural Sciences, Vitoria, Spain _______________________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY Mires occur in the Basque Country and north-west Navarra (northern Spain) due to the Atlantic influence on climate. They are most frequent in the north and become rarer to the south. True peatland is found at only six locations, but there are also some para-peaty habitats associated with springs and flushes which have very thin discontinuous peat layers. Although small, this mire territory straddles the boundary between two separate autonomous communities where different regulations and management guidelines apply. Both communities have developed extensive plans to exploit wind energy, and the summit ridges of many of the mountain ranges now carry long strings of turbines. Consequences for the Basque and Navarran mire ecosystems are reviewed. Because little is known about these habitats, they went largely unnoticed during the process of wind farm planning and were thus exposed to enormous risk. Nonetheless, the impacts of development so far have been limited by careful practice combined with the fact that the locations of most of the mires do not coincide exactly with the favoured locations for wind turbines. The only blanket bog is situated in the Zalama area, where plans to build a wind farm have been abandoned for a combination of reasons. Paradoxically, the wind farm planning process was instrumental in raising social and political awareness of this important peatland, leading to a very promising level of interest in its conservation and restoration amongst local institutions. -
