Norman Macleod "This strange, rather sad story": The Reflexive Design of Graham Greene's The Third Man. The circumstances surrounding the genesis and composition of Gra ham Greene's The Third Man ( 1950) have recently been recalled by Judy Adamson and Philip Stratford, in an essay1 largely devoted to characterizing some quite unwarranted editorial emendations which differentiate the earliest American editions from British (and other textually sound) versions of The Third Man. It turns out that these are changes which had the effect of giving the American reader a text which (for whatever reasons, possibly political) presented the Ameri can and Russian occupation forces in Vienna, and the central charac ter of Harry Lime, and his dishonourable deeds and connections, in a blander, softer light than Greene could ever have intended; indeed, according to Adamson and Stratford, Greene did not "know of the extensive changes made to his story in the American book and now claims to be 'horrified' by them"2 • Such obscurely purposeful editorial meddlings are perhaps the kind of thing that the textual and creative history of The Third Man could have led us to expect: they can be placed alongside other more official changes (usually introduced with Greene's approval and frequently of his own doing) which befell the original tale in its transposition from idea-resuscitated-from-old notebook to story to treatment to script to finished film. Adamson and Stratford show that these approved and 'official' changes involved revisions both of dramatis personae and of plot, and that they were often introduced for good artistic or practical reasons. -

THE AMBIVALENT CATHOLIC MODERNITY OF GRAHAM GREENE’S BRIGHTON ROCK AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In English By Karl O’Hanlon, B.A. Washington D.C. 28 th April, 2010 THE AMBIVALENT CATHOLIC MODERNITY OF GRAHAM GREENE’S BRIGHTON ROCK AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY Karl O’Hanlon, B.A. Thesis Advisor: John Pfordresher, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This thesis argues that the “religious sense” which emerged from Graham Greene’s Catholicism provides the basis for the critique of the ethics of modernity in his novels Brighton Rock (1938) and The Power and the Glory (1940). In his depiction of the self-righteous Ida Arnold in Brighton Rock , Greene elicits some problems inherent in modern ethical theory, comparing secular “right and wrong” unfavourably with a religious sense of “good and evil.” I suggest that the antimodern aspects of Pinkie in Brighton Rock are ultimately renounced by Greene as potentially dangerous, and in The Power and the Glory his critique of modernity evolves to a more ambivalent dialectic, in which facets of modernity are affirmed as well as rejected. I argue that this evolution in stance constitutes Greene’s search for a new philosophical and literary idiom – a “Catholic modernity.” ii With sincere thanks to John Pfordresher, for the great conversations about Greene, encouragement, careful reading, and patience in waiting for new chapter drafts, without which this thesis would have been much the poorer. -

The world for Greene is a sad and frightening place, where betrayal, injustice, and cruelty are the norm. His books of the 1930s, culminating in Brighton Rock (1938), are all, on some level, attempts to explain why this is so. -

GRAHAM GREENE Like many writers, Greene resisted the appellation of Catholic novelist, since he did not want readers to be seeking catechetical exactitude in his stories. In what is arguably his first Catholic novel, The Power and the Glory, Graham Greene contrasts a weak, alcoholic fugitive priest with his austere pursuer. There are others contrasts in the book as well between the hunted man who cannot escape the demands of his ministry and his soft, comfortable self before the revolution; between the second nocturne tale of martyrdom read by pious children and the real life flawed candidate for the firing squad with whiskey on his breath but the basic contrast is between the political and the religious. All efforts to see the significance of human life in thisworld terms are inadequate to the way it really is. Other Catholic novels are The Heart of the Matter, The End of the Affair and A BurntOut Case. The series comes to an end in 1973 with The Honorary Consul. Greene still had years to live and many books to write, but his imagination had switched from a religious into a political gear. The Heart of the Matter takes its motto from Charles Peguy. "At the very heart of Christianity is the sinner. No one is more competent on the matter of Christianity than the sinner unless it be the saint." Major Scobie damns himself out of pity for a waiflike war widow in colonial Africa. Greene is at his best presenting Catholicism through the medium of © Ralph McInerny, 2005. -

THE QUIET AMERICAN by Graham Greene THE AUTHOR Graham Greene (1904-1991) was born in Berkhamsted, England. He had a very troubled childhood, was bullied in school, on several occasions attempted suicide by playing Russian roulette, and eventually was referred for psychiatric help. Writing became an important outlet for his painful inner life. He took a degree in History at Oxford, then began work as a journalist. His conversion to Catholicism at the age of 22 was due largely to the influence of his wife-to-be, though he later became a devout follower of his chosen faith. His writing career included novels, short stories, and plays. Some of his novels dealt openly with Catholic themes, including The Power and the Glory (1940), The Heart of the Matter (1948), and The End of the Affair (1951), though the Vatican strongly disapproved of his portrayal of the dark side of man and the corruption in the Church and in the world. Others were based on his travel experiences, often to troubled parts of the world, including Mexico during a time of religious persecution, which produced The Lawless Roads (1939) as well as The Power and the Glory, The Quiet American (1955) about Vietnam, Our Man in Havana (1958) about Cuba, The Comedian (1966) about Haiti, The Honorary Consul (1973) about Paraguay, and The Human Factor (1978) about South Africa. His work with British Intelligence in Africa during World War II is reflected in The Heart of the Matter. Many of his novels were later made into films. Greene was also considered one of the finest film critics of his day, though one particularly sharp review attracted a libel suit from the studio producing Shirley Temple films when he suggested that the sexualization of children was likely to appeal to pedophiles. -

D.S. Savage Graham Greene and Belief 1 Although Graham Green has been writing novels successfully for fifty years and has received his share of critical attention and more than his share of popular success, there seems to be no general consensus as to the value and importance of his work. A writer in the Times Literary Supplement in 1971, when a new Collected Edition of Greene appeared together with his autobiography, A Sort ofLife, expressed the view that, besides being a literary entertainer worthy to rank with Eric Ambler and Somerset Maugham, Greene was the principal English novelist now writing in the great tradition of the novel as a work of art-the tradition of James and Conrad and Ford. Greene was concerned to restore to the modern novel the religious sense, and with it the sense of the importance of the human act. 'Like Mauriac, he is concerned to restore that im portance and thus to justify the novel in moral as well as in aesthetic terms .. ' It is difficult to accept this evaluation of Greene's importance. His early practice, to which the reviewer briefly refers, of dividing his work into novels proper and 'entertainments' already suggests some uncer tainty of intent. How serious are the 'serious' novels? The enter tainments are skilfully contrived stories of flight and pursuit, distinguished from their models, the yarns of John Buchan and Edgar Wallace, by their dispirited mood and shabby settings, and their down at-heel, morally dubious heroes: qualities which made them acceptable to the disabused younger generation in the bleak thirties and forties.
