GRAHAM GREENE Like many writers, Greene resisted the appellation of Catholic novelist, since he did not want readers to be seeking catechetical exactitude in his stories. In what is arguably his first Catholic novel, The Power and the Glory, Graham Greene contrasts a weak, alcoholic fugitive priest with his austere pursuer. There are others contrasts in the book as well between the hunted man who cannot escape the demands of his ministry and his soft, comfortable self before the revolution; between the second nocturne tale of martyrdom read by pious children and the real life flawed candidate for the firing squad with whiskey on his breath but the basic contrast is between the political and the religious. All efforts to see the significance of human life in thisworld terms are inadequate to the way it really is. Other Catholic novels are The Heart of the Matter, The End of the Affair and A BurntOut Case. The series comes to an end in 1973 with The Honorary Consul. Greene still had years to live and many books to write, but his imagination had switched from a religious into a political gear. The Heart of the Matter takes its motto from Charles Peguy. "At the very heart of Christianity is the sinner. No one is more competent on the matter of Christianity than the sinner unless it be the saint." Major Scobie damns himself out of pity for a waiflike war widow in colonial Africa. Greene is at his best presenting Catholicism through the medium of © Ralph McInerny, 2005. -

The thesis will be primarily concerned with the relationship of the central characters of Greene's novels to their environment. I will try to show how this relationship, which in Greene's early novels is often fatalistic and deterministic, changes as Greene becomes more concerned with the possibilities of a spiritual and moral 'awakening' within his heroes which can perhaps counter• balance the forces of determinism. -

GREENE'S MEMOIRS: THEMES AND BOOKS IN PROCESS Tho mas Bonnici Univers idade Estadual de Maringa The Problem of Memoirs Ever since Bede wrote his sho rt autobiography at the end of his History of the English Church and Peop le', English writers have not ceased to ruminate on their person al past. They succeede d in pro d ucing a corpus of autobiographica l work rang ing from diary to fictiona lized autobiog raphy to mem oirs. Green's memoirs do not only give the read er a glimpse of the writer's life but furni sh him with details about the inn ermost layers of his novels and hints on their mak ing. Memo irs are very tricky subjects to deal w ith. Not only is memory fall ible and unreli able but "d isag re eable facts are some times glossed ove r or repressed, truth may be distorted for the sake of convenience or harmon y and the occlusions of time may obsc ure as mu ch as they rev eal".2 In an interview given to V.s. Pr itche tt in the New York Time Magazini Greene rem ark s that "even this Kind of book [memoirs] is a re-creati on ". Mauriac says that when an author selects and chooses certain experiences or eve nts he probably falsifies his tru e experience. The valu e of these autobiog raphic facts expe rienced during the first twen ty years of one's life is highly qu estionable. This is extremely important when dealing wi th Greene's memoirs becau se, as Lerner writes, even tho ugh " the writer mu st be versio n of the living Graham Greene he may be a distor ted and partial version" .4 Fragmentos vol. -

Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. D.S. Savage Graham Greene and Belief 1 Although Graham Green has been writing novels successfully for fifty years and has received his share of critical attention and more than his share of popular success, there seems to be no general consensus as to the value and importance of his work. A writer in the Times Literary Supplement in 1971, when a new Collected Edition of Greene appeared together with his autobiography, A Sort ofLife, expressed the view that, besides being a literary entertainer worthy to rank with Eric Ambler and Somerset Maugham, Greene was the principal English novelist now writing in the great tradition of the novel as a work of art-the tradition of James and Conrad and Ford. Greene was concerned to restore to the modern novel the religious sense, and with it the sense of the importance of the human act. 'Like Mauriac, he is concerned to restore that im portance and thus to justify the novel in moral as well as in aesthetic terms .. ' It is difficult to accept this evaluation of Greene's importance. His early practice, to which the reviewer briefly refers, of dividing his work into novels proper and 'entertainments' already suggests some uncer tainty of intent. How serious are the 'serious' novels? The enter tainments are skilfully contrived stories of flight and pursuit, distinguished from their models, the yarns of John Buchan and Edgar Wallace, by their dispirited mood and shabby settings, and their down at-heel, morally dubious heroes: qualities which made them acceptable to the disabused younger generation in the bleak thirties and forties. -

Of English Literature Associate Professor Indus International University Gokul Dass Hindu Girls College Bathu,Una (H.P) Moradabad (U.P) Abstract Greene in his novels emphasizes the theme of man‘s isolation, alienation as Evil, Sin and Suffering and protest against the universe interfering with human activities and insisting on conformity through religious dimensions. Greene’s vision of life is paradoxical as he holds both Catholicism and modern politics together in unison. Greene appears to be pleading for proper harmony the rational and vital. Brighton Rock, The Power and Glory, Heart of the Matter, End of Affair underlines the theme of Evil, Sin and Suffering as alienation, seclusion, isolation, betrayal, murder and tries to bring out the significance of doing good, human love, and strong faith in God. Finally, it is right to argue that Greene's concept of ‘paradoxical vision’ is closely associated with his contradictory blending of religious and political ideas. Greene, Chipping Campden and J.B. Priestley As an adult Greene’s chose to live in urban or predominantly urban settings: Oxford, Clapham, the Albany, Capri, Antibes. The exception was Chipping Campden in the Cotswold Hills where he and Vivien rented a cottage from 1931-33. The remote, rural life in a distant part of Gloucestershire, described in Chapter 11 of A Sort of Life, is a far cry from the large and very smart village of today: the beautiful honey-coloured stone buildings a magnet for tourists from all over the world. The cottage on Hoo Lane, Back Ends has been fully renovated and modernised and is now a highly desirable holiday rental. When the couple arrived in March 1931 they found a two-bedroomed dwelling with rats in the roof and a paraffin lamp for lighting rather than mains electricity. ‘Little Orchard ’, where Greene harvested the apples and grew lettuces, is now surrounded by modern houses, their designs tastefully echoing the older buildings. There were compensations, however, in the form of fine walking country, the eccentricities of village life and the seclusion which allowed Greene to concentrate on his writing career. Indeed, at that stage Greene needed all his powers of concentration to sustain a literary career which was faltering following the failure of his two novels, The Name of Action and Rumour at Nightfall. After the miserably poor reception and sales of the latter work, he made a conscious decision for the first and last time in his life – as he notes in Ways of Escape, to write a novel which aimed to ‘please’ the reader.
