George Michael Was Britain's Biggest Pop Star of the 1980S, First with The
George Michael was Britain’s biggest pop star of the 1980s, first with the duo Wham! and then as a solo artist. The Three Crowns played a small but significant part in his story. After Wham! made their initial chart breakthrough with the single Young Guns (Go for It) in 1982, George’s songwriting gift brought them giant hits including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Freedom, and they became leading lights of the 80s boom in British pop music, alongside Duran Duran, Culture Club and Spandau Ballet, even exporting it behind the Iron Curtain. His first solo album Faith, released in 1987, sold 25 million copies, and George sold more than 100 million albums worldwide with Wham! and under his own name. George was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in Finchley, north London. His father, Kyriacos Panayiotou, was a Greek Cypriot restaurateur, and his mother an English dancer, Lesley Angold. In the late 1960s the family moved to Edgware, where George attended Kingsbury School, before they moved to the affluent Hertfordshire town of Radlett in the mid-1970s. Bushey Meads Comprehensive 1974 - 1981 George – a wimp Andy - cocksure In September 1975 a twelve year old George showed up at Bushey Meads School keen to impress as the new boy and was introduced to Andy Ridgeley who had already been impressing for a full year. Andy recalled their meeting as follows; “I remember at the time we were playing King of the Wall. As he was the new boy we goaded him into it. I was up there and he threw me off. -

“It’s just a matter of time”: African American Musicians and the Cultural Boycott in South Africa, 1968-1983 by Ashrudeen Waggie Thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (History) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University Supervisor: Dr. L. Ashrudeen Waggie March 2020 Copyright © 2020 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved i Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract In 1968 the United Nations General Assembly instituted a cultural boycott against apartheid South Africa. The cultural boycott prevented South Africa from having cultural, educational and sporting ties with the rest of the world, and it was an attempt by the international community to sever ties with South Africa. A culmination of this strategy was the publication of an annual registry by the United Nations of all international entertainers, actors, and others who performed in South Africa from 1983. Based on this registry a number of academic studies have been conducted, but very few studies have investigated those who came to perform in South Africa before the publication of the registry even though renowned artists such as Percy Sledge (1970), Brook Benton (1971 & 1982), Jimmy Smith (1978 & 1982) and Isaac Hayes (1978) performed in South Africa during this time. -

STOWE 2015-16 mail NEWS HIGHLIGHTS The 2015-2016 season of Robotics at Stowe saw the Junior and Senior teams qualify for the National Finals. Both teams reached the semi-final, but ended up facing each other. The Senior team prevailed and went on to become National Finalists and claim their place among StoweBots 500 of the world’s top teams at the VEX World Robotics Finals. The 2016 World Finals was the biggest robotics competition ever, setting a Guinness World Record with over 1,075 teams from 32 countries, and 20,000 people take on the World in attendance. The scale of the competition and venue was truly astonishing and beyond all expectations. Over the three days of competition the team played ten qualifying matches in the hope of making the playoff games. The team preformed incredibly well, holding its own in each match. Sadly the robot suffered some technical difficulties beyond our control. A change of CPU fixed the problem, but the losses put us further down the qualification ranking than we could have been. The StoweBots finished winning four out of the ten games and were placed 56 out of the 100 teams in their group. However, every single game they played was close despite the difficulties. The other aspect that shows the strength of our performance was the SP score of the team. This is the total score that your opponents achieved in your games; the higher the score the closer and more difficult the games were. The StoweBots SP score was 1658 and tenth highest of the group. -

CENTRE FOR CORpORaTE RE puTaTiON How Reputations are Won and Lost in Modern Information Markets A white paper for policy-makers, practitioners and academics May 2014 2 University of San Diego School of Law I University of Oxford Centre for Corporate Reputation Contents 1. Introduction 5 2. Policy Implications and Recommendations 7 3. Convergent Themes 10 4 Panels 18 Appendices A Panel 1 discussion – Technological Change 28 B Panel 2 discussion – Proliferation of Stakeholders and Audiences 46 C Panel 3 discussion – Polarisation 60 D List of Speakers 70 3 1 Introduction On January 17-18, 2014, the University of San Diego Center for Corporate and Securities Law and the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation co-sponsored a conference at the University of San Diego on “How Reputations Are Won and Lost in Modern Information Markets.” The discussion included public remarks by more than a dozen prominent experts from academic, business, and media. The videotaped remarks, along with panel discussions and questions, are available at http://www.sandiego.edu/ law/school/events/webcasts/2014.php The transcripts are attached in the Appendix. After the public sessions, a Conference Editorial Board (CEB) was convened consisting of the public speakers and a small number of additional invited members. The CEB discussed the issues and themes from the public sessions, and considered the organisational and public policy implications that emerged. This White Paper contains our policy recommendations in Section 2 and summarises the conference in Section 3 and the convergent themes emerging from the subsequent discussions in Section 4. We hope this White Paper will contribute meaningfully to the debate around how modern information markets affect how organisations and institutions engage with society to deliver outcomes, and that it will be a useful reference document for policy-makers seeking insight into how they might use reputation as a mechanism to hold organisations and institutions to account.
