STOWE 2015-16 mail NEWS HIGHLIGHTS The 2015-2016 season of Robotics at Stowe saw the Junior and Senior teams qualify for the National Finals. Both teams reached the semi-final, but ended up facing each other. The Senior team prevailed and went on to become National Finalists and claim their place among StoweBots 500 of the world’s top teams at the VEX World Robotics Finals. The 2016 World Finals was the biggest robotics competition ever, setting a Guinness World Record with over 1,075 teams from 32 countries, and 20,000 people take on the World in attendance. The scale of the competition and venue was truly astonishing and beyond all expectations. Over the three days of competition the team played ten qualifying matches in the hope of making the playoff games. The team preformed incredibly well, holding its own in each match. Sadly the robot suffered some technical difficulties beyond our control. A change of CPU fixed the problem, but the losses put us further down the qualification ranking than we could have been. The StoweBots finished winning four out of the ten games and were placed 56 out of the 100 teams in their group. However, every single game they played was close despite the difficulties. The other aspect that shows the strength of our performance was the SP score of the team. This is the total score that your opponents achieved in your games; the higher the score the closer and more difficult the games were. The StoweBots SP score was 1658 and tenth highest of the group.

The videotaped remarks, along with panel discussions and questions, are available at http://www.sandiego.edu/ law/school/events/webcasts/2014.php The transcripts are attached in the Appendix. After the public sessions, a Conference Editorial Board (CEB) was convened consisting of the public speakers and a small number of additional invited members. The CEB discussed the issues and themes from the public sessions, and considered the organisational and public policy implications that emerged. This White Paper contains our policy recommendations in Section 2 and summarises the conference in Section 3 and the convergent themes emerging from the subsequent discussions in Section 4. We hope this White Paper will contribute meaningfully to the debate around how modern information markets affect how organisations and institutions engage with society to deliver outcomes, and that it will be a useful reference document for policy-makers seeking insight into how they might use reputation as a mechanism to hold organisations and institutions to account.

We also welcome them as Old Owenians, hope they’ll keep in touch by reading our Old Owenians Newsletters and come back to join us at some of our 400th anniversary events next year. Perhaps they’ll revisit the school, as over 120 of you did for our highly successful first ever Old Owenians Coffee and Tour morning on Saturday 26th May—read more on pages 3 and 4! We were delighted that our school was represented on two significant Jubilee occasions by current and past students… ...our Deputy Head Girl, Alice Robinson, was honoured to be invited to attend the Westminster Hall celebration lunch with members of the Worshipful Company of Brewers (our school’s trustee), following the Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Tuesday 5th June. It was hosted by the 108 Livery Companies of the City of London—around 700 guests and representatives of charities and the armed forces dined with members of the Royal Family. The Livery Companies originated in medieval times as Guilds responsible for trade regulation—today the Companies use their funds to undertake charitable and community work. Alice, whose name was drawn out of a hat for the opportunity to attend, comments on page 5.

He attended Dame Alice Owen’s Grammar School and thought his future lay in medicine but, after winning a holiday singing competition, decided that his vocation was as a singer … the rest as they say, is history … SPANDAU BALLET – THE 80’s PHENOMENON Pioneers of the 80’s New Romantic movement, Spandau Ballet formed in 1978 and had numerous chart topping singles and albums all over the world, some of the most memorable being the singles “Gold”, “Only When You Leave”, “Lifeline”, the epic “Through the Barricades” and of course the international number one “True”; the latter famously sampled by PM Dawn in 1991 and featured on Paul Anka’s Rock Swings in 2005. As lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley has, over the years, earned the accolade of being one of pop music’s greatest vocalists. In addition to all the band’s songs, many will remember his prominent vocal contribution to the Band Aid UK charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and subsequent 1985 London appearance at Live Aid. He also performed solo at the Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley in June 1988. News from the UK Lowe Syndrome Trust Lowe Syndrome Trust JANUARY 2006 “Care today … cure tomorrow” Since the January 2005 newsletter , the charity has continued raising awareness of Lowe Syndrome and the need for funding for research which will hopefully lead to better treatments and eventually a cure of Lowe Syndrome, an incurable children’s disease. We are delighted to have been able to raise funding to support two new research projects in 2005 for cataract research at the Institute of Ophthalmology (Moorfields) and Kidney research at Addrenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge. All the families affected by the disease are extremely grateful for your continued support and especially those recently diagnosed. Lowe syndrome is caused by a missing enzyme, sometimes a new mutation, the cause unknown. The disease affects the brain, eyes, kidneys, bones and muscles leading to a short life expectancy. Black and White Ball May 2005 The annual Lowe Syndrome Ball took place on the 21st May at the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge. The Theme of the evening was a Black and White Ball. Tony Hadley who is Patron of the charity continued to support us by performing a selection of Spandau Ballet hits. Tony kindly arranged for his close friend, Martin Fry (formerly ABC) to perform some of his songs including Poison Arrow and The Look of Love. Jono Coleman, Trust Patron, supported the charity once again by attending the Ball – Jono has also appeared on many TV charity programmes donating his winnings to the charity. The Fabbagirls (Susie Webb and Zoe Nicholas), Lowe Trust supporters from the beginning of the charity, lending their time to so many events, sang a host of Abba songs, intervened with their cheeky humour!.
