Capernaum, the City of Jesus
Capernaum “Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.” (Mark 1:21) © 2017 David Padfield www.padfield.com Scripture taken from the New King James Version. Copyright 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Capernaum, The City Of Jesus Introduction I. The city of Capernaum was a small fishing village on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, about two miles west of the Jordan River. A. The Hebrew name for this village is Keœfar NahΩum, which means, “village of Nahum.” B. While this ancient town is not mentioned by name in the Old Testament, it is mentioned sixteen times in the New Testament. C. Matthew refers to Capernaum as our Lord’s “own city” (Matt 9:1), for it became the center of His Galilean ministry. D. This is interesting since He was not born in Capernaum, His parents did not live in there, and He did not grow up there! E. Jesus performed more miracles and preached more sermons in and around Capernaum than at any other place during His entire ministry. F. The residents of this prosperous town were common people who made their living from fishing, agriculture, and trade. G. The road leading to Damascus passed nearby, providing a commercial link with regions to the north and south. H. Capernaum was also a garrison town, housing a detachment of Roman soldiers, under a centurion, along with government officials. II. It was in the vicinity of Capernaum that Jesus chose several of His apostles. -

Monuments, Materiality, and Meaning in the Classical Archaeology of Anatolia
MONUMENTS, MATERIALITY, AND MEANING IN THE CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY OF ANATOLIA by Daniel David Shoup A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Classical Art and Archaeology) in The University of Michigan 2008 Doctoral Committee: Professor Elaine K. Gazda, Co-Chair Professor John F. Cherry, Co-Chair, Brown University Professor Fatma Müge Göçek Professor Christopher John Ratté Professor Norman Yoffee Acknowledgments Athena may have sprung from Zeus’ brow alone, but dissertations never have a solitary birth: especially this one, which is largely made up of the voices of others. I have been fortunate to have the support of many friends, colleagues, and mentors, whose ideas and suggestions have fundamentally shaped this work. I would also like to thank the dozens of people who agreed to be interviewed, whose ideas and voices animate this text and the sites where they work. I offer this dissertation in hope that it contributes, in some small way, to a bright future for archaeology in Turkey. My committee members have been unstinting in their support of what has proved to be an unconventional project. John Cherry’s able teaching and broad perspective on archaeology formed the matrix in which the ideas for this dissertation grew; Elaine Gazda’s support, guidance, and advocacy of the project was indispensible to its completion. Norman Yoffee provided ideas and support from the first draft of a very different prospectus – including very necessary encouragement to go out on a limb. Chris Ratté has been a generous host at the site of Aphrodisias and helpful commentator during the writing process. -
Vazelon (Zavulon) Monastery
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 6, No. 1; January 2016 A Lesser Known Important Cultural Heritage Source and Religious Tourism Value in Turkey: Vazelon (Zavulon) Monastery Ahmet Çavuş, PhD Atatürk University Faculty of Tourism Departmant of Tourism Guidance Erzurum, Turkey. Abstract Vazelon which is also known as Zavulon Monastry is located within the borders of Macka district Kiremitli village in North eastern Trabzon. It is 45 km away from Trabzon, 15 km away from Macka and its height is 1210 m. The name of the monastery is assumed to be originated from Mount Zavulon and this religious structure was built at the foot of the mountain cliff. Monastery was originally built as a chapel in 270 A.C. at the intersection point of Yahya stream and Degirmen stream. However it was demolished as a result of Persian attack in 6th century and many priests were killed. After this event, it was built in current location at three different stages. The monastery devoted to John the Baptist was a 4 storey building. At that time, it was an institution having school, court, and notary and guest house functions as well as providing service as a place of worship and for raising monks. The priests in the monastery were noting and saving the political, economical and social subjects since 13th century. After the population exchange agreement between Turkey and Greece in 1923, Vazelon monastery was emptied. This place which was left alone, was later destroyed by treasure hunters and although the main frame of the building remained standing, trees grew inside and it took a ruined view. -
Innocent Blood — Part One
ONE SESSION SESSION INNOCENT BLOOD — PART ONE Tel Megiddo, where this session was filmed, is located at a strategic mountain pass overlooking the Plain of Jezreel, which made the city of Megiddo one of the most important cities in ancient Israel. The Via Maris, the main trade route between the dominant world pow- ers of the day — Egypt and the Mesopotamian empires of Assyria, Babylon, and Persia — crossed the mountains at Megiddo. So who- ever controlled the city could exert great power over world trade and have significant influence over world culture. In fact, the Via Maris was one source of Solomon’s wealth because God gave him the political might to control the key cities along that trade route — Hazor, Gezer, and of course Megiddo. Some scholars believe that because of Megiddo’s strategic location more battles have been fought in the Jezreel Valley below it than in any other place in the world. But in the context of the Bible, Megiddo repre- sents more than political control, more than economic and cultural influence. It also represents the battle for spiritual control of the minds and hearts of people — the ongoing battle between good and evil. That battle was waged when the people of ancient Israel lived in the land, it continues to this day, and it will culminate in the bat- tle of Har Megiddo, or Armageddon. So let’s take a closer look at the significance of Tel Megiddo. Centuries before the Israelites settled in the Promised Land (from about 2950 – 2350 BC), Megiddo was a prominent “high place” where the p eople of Canaan worshiped their fertility god, Baal, and his supposed mistress, Asherah. -

Thus, three-dimensional (3D) models of historical structures are created for visualize and documentation of them. Laser scanner performs collecting spatial data with fast and high density. 3D modeling is extensively performed by terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) with high accuracy. At the same time, point cloud registration of large scale objects must be performed precisely for high accuracy 3D modeling. In this study, 3D model was created by measuring the historical Mevlana Museum in Konya with terrestrial laser scanner. Outside and inside point clouds were registered relation one of the point clouds selected from the measurements. In addition accuracy evaluation was performed for created point cloud model.
