Indian hieroglyphs Indus script corpora, archaeo-metallurgy and Meluhha (Mleccha) Jules Bloch’s work on formation of the Marathi language (Bloch, Jules. 2008, Formation of the Marathi Language. (Reprint, Translation from French), New Delhi, Motilal Banarsidass. ISBN: 978-8120823228) has to be expanded further to provide for a study of evolution and formation of Indian languages in the Indian language union (sprachbund). The paper analyses the stages in the evolution of early writing systems which began with the evolution of counting in the ancient Near East. Providing an example from the Indian Hieroglyphs used in Indus Script as a writing system, a stage anterior to the stage of syllabic representation of sounds of a language, is identified. Unique geometric shapes required for tokens to categorize objects became too large to handle to abstract hundreds of categories of goods and metallurgical processes during the production of bronze-age goods. In such a situation, it became necessary to use glyphs which could distinctly identify, orthographically, specific descriptions of or cataloging of ores, alloys, and metallurgical processes. About 3500 BCE, Indus script as a writing system was developed to use hieroglyphs to represent the ‘spoken words’ identifying each of the goods and processes. A rebus method of representing similar sounding words of the lingua franca of the artisans was used in Indus script. This method is recognized and consistently applied for the lingua franca of the Indian sprachbund. That the ancient languages of India, constituted a sprachbund (or language union) is now recognized by many linguists. The sprachbund area is proximate to the area where most of the Indus script inscriptions were discovered, as documented in the corpora. -

Womanhood and Spirituality: A Journey between Transcendence and Tradition USHA S. NAYAR This article focuses on how women in the past and women in contemporary India have chosen the path of spirituality, and how Indian culture has positioned women vis-a-vis spirituality. It explores female spirituality in a patriarchal para digm through women like Sita, Meera, Savitri and Kannagi, who faced humilia tion and hostility, but who tread the path of single-minded devotion to their principles and thus combined the feminine principle of grace with tenacity, stead fastness of purpose, vision and character. These prototypes inspire and guide the women in India even today and the article illustrates this through contemporary profiles in courage. The article stresses on the fact that in the Hindu pantheon of gods and goddesses, every god has a goddess, and as the form of Ardhanaareeshwara, the fusion of Shiva and Shakti in one body, denotes, male and female principles work together as equal partners in the universe. Other in stances reiterate that in ancient India, women occupied a very important position. While analysing the spirituality of women as a cultural expression, the study un derlines the fact that the Hindu version of the Mother image has manifested itself in the vision of Bharat Mata and underlines the fact that spirituality mediates rela tionships. It heals, provides succour to the emotionally needy, physically abused, and rebuilds fundamental trust in oneself. The modern approach to spirituality, according to this study, defines it as a means of reaching equilibrium or harmony through gender equality. Prof. Usha S. -

AN ETHNOMUSICOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON KANIYAN KOOTHU Aaron J. Paige This paper will analyze some of the strategies by which Kaniyans, a minority com- munity from the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu, use music as a vehicle to negoti- ate, reconcile, and understand social, cultural, and economic change. Kaniyan Koothu performances are generally commissioned for kodai festivals, during which Kaniyans sing lengthy ballads. These stories vary locally from village to village and recount the adventures, exploits, and virtues of gods and goddesses specific to the area and community in which they are worshipped. While these narratives are en- tertaining in their own right, they also serve as springboards for subjective compari- son and interpretation. Kaniyans thus, transform mythological legends into modern social commentary. In a world perceived to be growing increasingly complicated by globalization and modernization, these folk musicians openly voice in performance both their concern for the loss of traditional values and their trepidation that Tamil culture, tamizh panpaadu – particularly village culture, gramiya panpaadu – are gradually being displaced by foreign principles, products, and technologies. In con- tradistinction to this conservative rhetoric, the Kaniyans, in recent years, have made major reformations to their own musical practice. Using specific textual examples, the first part of this paper will look at the ways in which musicians’ semi-improvised narratives foster solidarity under the rubric of a shared Tamil language and cultural identity. The second part of this paper, by way of musical examples, will attempt to illuminate how these same musicians are engaged in redefining and reformulating their musical tradition through the appropriation and integration of rhythmic models characteristic of Carnatic drumming. -

UNIT – I Sources The Literay Sources Sangam Period The consisted, of Tolkappiyam a Tamil grammar work, eight Anthologies (Ettutogai), the ten poems (Padinen kell kanakku ) the twin epics, Silappadikaram and Manimekalai and other poems. The sangam works dealt with the aharm and puram life of the people. To collect various information regarding politics, society, religion and economy of the sangam period, these works are useful. The sangam works were secular in character. Kallabhra period The religious works such as Tamil Navalar Charital,Periyapuranam and Yapperumkalam were religious oriented, they served little purpose. Pallava Period Devaram, written by Apper, simdarar and Sambandar gave references tot eh socio economic and the religious activities of the Pallava age. The religious oriented Nalayira Tivya Prabandam also provided materials to know the relation of the Pallavas with the contemporary rulers of South India. The Nandikkalambakam of Nandivarman III and Bharatavenba of Perumdevanar give a clear account of the political activities of Nandivarman III. The early pandya period Limited Tamil sources are available for the study of the early Pandyas. The Pandikkovai, the Periyapuranam, the Divya Suri Carita and the Guruparamparai throw light on the study of the Pandyas. The Chola Period The chola empire under Vijayalaya and his successors witnessed one of the progressive periods of literary and religious revival in south India The works of South Indian Vishnavism arranged by Nambi Andar Nambi provide amble information about the domination of Hindu religion in south India. -

Hart, Chair In this dissertation, I discuss some representations of place in early (ca. 100 CE - 300 CE) Tamil poetry collectively called caṅkam literature. While previous research has emphasized the im- portance of place as landscape imagery in these poems, it has seldom gone beyond treating landscape / place as symbolic of human emotionality. I argue that this approach does not ad- dress the variety in the representation of place seen in this literature. To address this the- oretical deficiency, I study place in caṅkam poetry as having definite ontological value and something which is immediately cognized by the senses of human perception. Drawing from a range of texts, I will argue that in these poems, the experience of place emerges in a di- alogic between the human self and place - a dialogic which brings together sensory experi- ence, perception, memory, and various socio-cultural patterns; place, in these poems, is not as much an objective geographical entity as it is the process of perception itself. -
The Chera Dynasty
The Chera Dynasty The Chera dynasty was one of the principal lineages to have ruled over southern India in early history. The Cheras controlled the central and northern parts of Kerala and the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu and was a prosperous kingdom owing to its trade with the Romans. The Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas were the most powerful three kingdoms to have ruled during the Sangam Age, which was the period between the first century BCE to the end of the second century CE. The Cheras of Ancient South India ● The Cheras controlled the central and northern parts of Kerala and the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu ● Vanji was their capital and the ports of the west coast, Musiri and Tondi, were under their control ● The emblem of the Cheras was ‘Bow and arrow’ ● The Chera country was geographically well placed to profit from maritime trade via the extensive Indian Ocean networks. Trade of Indian spices, timber, pearls and gems were common ● The Chera kings were also known as "Keralaputas" (sons of Kerala) ● Uthiyan Cheralathan is the earliest known Chera ruler. Following him, other important rulers of the kingdom include: ○ Nedunjeral Adan - He had defeated seven crowned kings and won the title of “Adhiraja” ○ Senguttuvan - Believed to be the greatest Chera ruler, he was popularly known as Red Chera ○ Kudakko Ilanjeral Irumporai - Believed to be one of the last Chera kings ● A lot of scholars have recently accepted that there were two branches of the Chera family: ○ The Patitrupathu speaks of eight Chera kings, their territory and fame ○ The inscriptions of Pugalur near Karur mention Chera kings of three generations. -
