Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute.

  • Spoofs and the Politics of the Film Image's Ontology in Tamil Cinema
Spoofs and the Politics of the Film Image’s Ontology in Tamil Cinema * Constantine V. Nakassis All Film Spoofs, No Spoof Films Commercial Tamil cinema has long been a travesty of itself, its textuality woven from so many citational allusions, homages, and self-parodies; and yet, until recently there was no such recognized genre of the spoof film, only “comedy tracks” trailing in the shadows of the grandiose hero and his more serious narrative, parodying his potent image here and there, most often through scenes of comically inverted or failed heroism (Nakassis 2010:209–221). In 2010, this was seen to have changed, with the release of a surfeit of spoof films—Venkat Prabhu’s Goa, Simbudevan’s Irumbu Kottai Mirattu Singam, and, most importantly for this paper, C. S. Amudhan’s aptly titled Thamizh Padam, or ‘Tamil Movie.’1 And then of course, there was that unwitting spoof hero, the self-proclaimed “Power Star,” Dr. S. Srinivasan, who entered the scene in 2011 with his unbel- ievably absurd, yet ambiguously self-serious, film (Lathika) and public persona (figure 1).2 Industry insiders and film enthusiasts often explain this seeming par- adox that Tamil cinema is all spoof with no spoofs by pointing to the self- seriousness of the industry—that is, that it can’t take a joke; or alter- natively by pointing to its cultural and historical particularity—that is, that “spoofs” are a foreign genre. But what is so notable is that the ind- ustry has long made jokes at its own expense. Think, for example, of Nagesh’s memorable comedy track from Sridhar’s classic 1964 romantic comedy Kadhalikka Neeramillai (‘No Time for Love’), which turns on Nagesh’s nascent film production: a parody of the film producer, Nagesh * Constantine V.

From Goanet archives. Transcribed by Roland Francis. Chris & Lorna - Love and Longing in Mumbai's Jazz Age by Naresh Fernandes - July 2003 When jazz swung into the subcontinent, Goans seized it as the song of their souls. "Jazz gave us freedom of expression," explains Frank Fernand, who played in the Teddy Weatherford band at the Taj. "You played jazz the way you feel morning you play differently, evening you play differently." New tunes came to India as sheet music, but that sometimes wasn't much help even to accomplished readers: jazz contained such unconventional instructions as glissando, mute and attack. "But when we heard the records, we knew how to play the notes," Frank says. For a Goan jazzman, the greatest accolade was to be told that he "played like a negro". No one seems to have received more praise on this account than Chic Chocolate, who occasionally led a two-trumpet barrage at the Green's Hotel with Chris Perry. Chic whose name Goans pronounced as if they were talking about a rooster's offspring was known as the "Louis Armstrong of India". His stratospheric trumpet notes and his growly scatting were a tribute to his New Orleans idol. "He had a negro personality," Frank Fernand marvels. "He played everything by heart." His stage presence was unforgettable. As the band reached a crescendo, Chic would fall on one knee and raise his horn to the stars. Chic had been born Antonio Xavier Vaz in Aldona in 1916. His mother wanted him to be a mechanic and earn a respectable living, but he dreamt of a life in music.
