RICHARD STRAUSS - Eine Alpensinfonie, Op. 64 - (An Alpine Symphony) - Frank Shipway (Conductor) - Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra - Hybrid SACD - 7318599919508 - Released: October 2012 - BIS SACD1950 Who would ever have thought that a sequence of simple intervals - a descending third, followed by a descending fourth and fifth, all off the same principal note - could evoke such strong emotions. They generally don't, but when given the Richard Strauss treatment of scoring them for horns, pitted against ascending strings, they create quite a powerful and uplifting effect. It's no wonder Strauss used that deceptively awe-inspiring motif at the climactic point of this tone poem, to represent the state of elation at reaching the summit after an arduous ascent and journey. In fact, the whole work is a masterpiece of orchestration and tone painting, ranging from the darkest night to sunlit meadows, and a depiction of a thunderstorm that will make you want to run for cover. In this new recording, conductor Frank Shipway and the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra take full advantage of this splendid score and capture the raw-grit-mixed-with-philosophical-loftiness essence of this work. And all of it captured in wonderful sound, where for once one can clearly hear the pipe organ, and the thunder and wind machines to full effect. Segments of this recording are unrivalled at this point. The thunderstorm section in particular is rendered even more effective by the stillness of the calm that precedes it. Very highly recommended! Richard Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie: A Culmination and Rejection of Nineteenth Century Philosophical Influences Chloe Tula MUSI 551 Dr. Bailey November 18, 2016 !1 ABSTRACT The goal of this paper is two-fold: on one hand, exploring how Alpensinfonie both challenges and stays true to traditional symphonic idioms, and on the other, examining how it fits into Strauss’s compositional career, personal religious journey, and the greater landscape of early 20th century leanings towards modernism. This paper is part analysis, part biography, and part historical analysis. Strauss clearly had a unique (and changing) perspective on Friedrich Nietzsche’s writings, and this often drew sharp contradictions in his life; one can view evidence of how this plays into Alpensinfonie, especially when contrasted against Zarathustra (1896), which shares many motives with Alpensinfonie (which, coincidentally, was sketched out as early as 1899, before Strauss’s operatic career took off). While Un Alpensinfonie is not his definitive - and far from his final - work, it is an important landmark in Strauss’s ever-changing compositional perspective. In Un Alpensinfonie, Strauss overturns norms of the early twentieth century by constructing an intense, one-movement symphony that all but replaces lofty reverence of deity figures with a more universal reverence of nature, adding to the collection of earth- conscious masterpieces (e.g. Rite of Spring, La Mer, The Planets for instance) that inspired a irreversible large-scale shift to programmatic and agnostic-leaning music in the European modernist movement to follow. In addition, I explore the ideas of landscape in relation to Eine Alpensinfonie and how Strauss manages the alpine landscape as played out through his music. This exploration is substantiated by a thorough melodic analysis of the piece, which has organized themes hierarchically and given them titles based on their arrangement, style, and position within the piece. There are multiple questions that this thesis addresses in relation to the program and the thematic material of Eine Alpensinfonie. Numerous Strauss scholars have provided suggestions on how the program could be interpreted, though there has not been a definite answer to the question of what the program is for this piece of music. The question that I ask is what are some of the different assertions made about the program of Eine Alpensinfonie and do they hold up to critical analysis of other evidence found throughout my own research. May, 2020 ◎No. 1941 Subscription (Program B) ◎ ■Richard Strauss (1864–1949) ■Eine Alpensinfonie Op. 64 (50') Richard Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony), Op. 64 was composed between 1911 and 1915 (Strauss completed the orchestration on February 8, 1915). The first performance took place in Berlin on October 28, 1915, with Strauss conducting Hofkapelle Dresden (today’s Staatskapelle Dresden). The piece is one of Strauss’s largest orchestral works, scored for an orchestra of an immense size, even requiring an offstage ensemble consisting of twelve French horns, two trumpets, and two trombones. Since the creation of his first tone poem Aus Italien (From Italy), Op. 16 in 1886, Strauss composed such works with a steady pace, amounting to a total of ten pieces by the time he finished his Eine Alpensinfonie. Many remain popular today and are frequently included in the programs of professional orchestras worldwide. Among his tone poems are Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration), Op. 24 (1889), Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spoke Zarathustra), Op.30 (1896), and Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), Op. 40 (1898). After completing Eine Alpensifonie, however, Strauss lost interest in tone poems and began concentrating on operas. Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie reflects his enthusiastic feelings towards nature. Strauss liked the mountains in particular; he even built a house in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, where he could enjoy the stunning view of the Alps. The composition, however, is much more than a simple depiction of an experience in the mountains. The tone poem can be traced back to a draft of an incomplete composition Strauss wrote in 1899.
