    I. Teej and Liberation of Women The people of Nepal comprise a great variety of races, religions, castes, cultures and languages. Such a diversity of the Nepali society predates the formation of the present state of Nepal. Geography, along with historical processes, seems to have greatly conditioned ethno- regional and cultural formation of the country. Diversities of land - high mountains, plains, deep rivers and dense forests have already fostered several isolated cultural pockets within its territorial span. As a result, several independent and semi-independent but scattered principalities with relative ethno- religious and cultural identity of their own have been existing. Over the period, they have gone through various socio- cultural process and historical intervention. Every country is dominant with certain language, custom, religion and caste. CBS report has stated that in Nepal the chief religions are the Hindu, Buddhist and the Muslim though Christianity is being practised for several decades which are the global influence of religion and culture. The most dominant religion „Hindu‟ is one of the chief religions in the world. In this regard, Axel Michaels comments, “Hinduism is counted as one of the world religions. With more than 663 million followers, it even forms the third largest religious domination-after Christianity (1.67 billion) and Islam (881 million). The „Hinduism‟ is based on the scriptures like the Vedas, the Puranas, the Upanisads, the epics like the Mahabharat, and the Ramayana and also on the philosophies of saints and Hindu priests as well as Brahminical way of life. Teej is the festival and ritual especially for the Hindu women, celebrated on the third day after the new moon in Nepali month of Bhadra Sukla Trayodasi (August).

  • Representation and Spatial Practice in Varanasi (India)
Sacred Journeys and Profane Travellers: Representation and Spatial Practice in Varanasi (India) Cristiana Zara Degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2011 DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY ROYAL HOLLOWAY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON Declaration of Authorship I Cristiana Zara hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with tourist representations and practices in India. Orientalist aesthetics have often associated this country with notions of spirituality and mysticism; tourist narratives sustain and reinforce such representations by describing India as a land of ancient rituals and timeless traditions. The visual construction of India’s ‘spiritual landscapes’ has been largely deployed as a powerful tool for subduing the unfamiliar Other within reassuring epistemological categories. However, tourism research has recently become interested in exploring the role of tourist practices in landscape production. Not only do tourists ‘gaze upon’ landscapes, they also script landscapes through practices and performances. By focusing on the case of Varanasi, the Indian pilgrimage city on the banks of the Ganges, this thesis shows how tourist practices (re)produce and make sense of the city’s ‘sacredscape’. Special attention is paid to the riverfront, which epitomizes the cultural and spiritual significance ascribed to the city. Both Hindu and tourist narratives depict the riverfront as embodying a special power, a unique meaning, whether this uniqueness is held to be a ‘spiritual’ or a ‘picturesque’ one. The thesis analyses the city’s riverfront as the place where tourist, ritual, and day-to-day activities are played out and negotiated, and where the aesthetics of landscape is confronted with the materialities and the practices inherent to this place.

।10.33।। Aksaranam, of the letters; I am the akarah, letter a. Samasikasya, of the group of compound words, I am the compund (called) Dvandva. Besides, aham eva, I Myself; am the aksayah, infinite, endless; kalah, time, well known as ‘moment’ etc.; or, I am the supreme God who is Kala (Time, the measurer) even of time. I am the dhata, Dispenser, the dispenser of the fruits of actions of the whole world, visvatomukhah, with faces everywhere. Akshara: Continuing his teaching, Swamiji said, we are seeing Sri Krishna continue enumeration of the glories of Ishwara. In Shloka # 33, he said that among Aksharas I am Aa. Sarasvati Devi is in the form of Alphabetic letters. Even among all letters Aa is most sacred. It is sacred because it is a basic letter that emerges from our mouth without doing anything to the mouth. Thus sounds such as E, U come about by some modification to the mouth whereas Aa is an effortless sound of the mouth. Akara is also a flexible sound that can be modified into other alphabets. Hence Aa kara is considered Karana aksharam, causal sound, while all other alphabets are considered Karya Aksharam, the effect. Vedas say that A Kara manifests as all other letters. It says all letters are a modification of Aa. In our tradition every alphabet has a presiding deity. The presiding deity of Aa is Brahmaji, the Creator of the world.

Preface: Tirth Yatras or pilgrimages have been an integral part of Hinduism. Pilgrimages are considered quite important by the ritualistic followers of Sanathana dharma. There are a few centers of sacredness, which are held at high esteem by the ardent devotees who dream to travel and worship God in these holy places. All these holy sites have some mythological significance attached to them. When people go to a temple, they say they go for Darsan – of the image of the presiding deity. The pinnacle act of Hindu worship is to stand in the presence of the deity and to look upon the image so as to see and be seen by the deity and to gain the blessings. There are thousands of Siva sthalams- pilgrimage sites - renowned for their divine images. And it is for the Darsan of these divine images as well the pilgrimage places themselves - which are believed to be the natural places where Gods have dwelled - the pilgrimage is made.

123 .A CRITICAL STUDY OF THE ^ OF UNMAADA ^ *M. G. Ramu, **B. S. Venkataram Ayurvedic Research Unit, A.I.I.M.H., Bangalore Attempts to study mind in its scientific perspective have been existing for ages. Yajurveda, one of the oldest literary records has tried to give the picture of mind as * Divine Light' and the ' Via Media' of perception, memory, etc.i Unmada has been, recorded in Atharva Veda with its stages and treatment for the first time.* The word has been used as UNMADA. Gradually towards Samhita period (800 B.C. to 600 B.C.) UNMADA seems to have become UNMAADA. In Taittariya Samhita it is said that Pishacha (Manohana) a kind of krimi, impairs mind and Gandharvas and Apsaxas cause unmaada in man ', *„ *a. In premier Ayurvedic classics like Charaka Samhita. Susfrrata Samhita and Astangahridaya, Unmada has been defined with different view points, 5 to 9. Out of these, Charaka's definition appears to be more appealing on account of being easily understandable. He Mates that Unmaada has to be understood as the unsettled condition of the Manas (mind), Buddhi (understanding), Samjna (consciousness), Gnana (perception), Smriti (memory), Bhakti (inclination), Sheela (character), Chesta (behaviour), and Achara (conduct). Considering various aspects of the aesease, Unmada has been classified by ancient Ayurvedic savants. Charaka records Unmaada as of five kinds at one place and two viz.j Nija and Agantu at the other in the chapter he has devoted for " Unmada Nidana " (pathology of unmada).io Shushruta and Vagbhata, the former being known as a contemporary of Agnivesha, the author of Charaka Samhita (500 to 300 B.C.) and the latter who flourished during 7 A.D., recognize unmada as of six types.u Thus we come across varities of opinion about the classification.

  • The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa SALYA
The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa SALYA PARVA translated by Kesari Mohan Ganguli In parentheses Publications Sanskrit Series Cambridge, Ontario 2002 Salya Parva Section I Om! Having bowed down unto Narayana and Nara, the most exalted of male beings, and the goddess Saraswati, must the word Jaya be uttered. Janamejaya said, “After Karna had thus been slain in battle by Savyasachin, what did the small (unslaughtered) remnant of the Kauravas do, O regenerate one? Beholding the army of the Pandavas swelling with might and energy, what behaviour did the Kuru prince Suyodhana adopt towards the Pandavas, thinking it suitable to the hour? I desire to hear all this. Tell me, O foremost of regenerate ones, I am never satiated with listening to the grand feats of my ancestors.” Vaisampayana said, “After the fall of Karna, O king, Dhritarashtra’s son Suyodhana was plunged deep into an ocean of grief and saw despair on every side. Indulging in incessant lamentations, saying, ‘Alas, oh Karna! Alas, oh Karna!’ he proceeded with great difficulty to his camp, accompanied by the unslaughtered remnant of the kings on his side. Thinking of the slaughter of the Suta’s son, he could not obtain peace of mind, though comforted by those kings with excellent reasons inculcated by the scriptures. Regarding destiny and necessity to be all- powerful, the Kuru king firmly resolved on battle. Having duly made Salya the generalissimo of his forces, that bull among kings, O monarch, proceeded for battle, accompanied by that unslaughtered remnant of his forces. Then, O chief of Bharata’s race, a terrible battle took place between the troops of the Kurus and those of the Pandavas, resembling that between the gods and the Asuras.

  • Bhagavad Gita:The Shivaratri and the Story of Lord Shiva
International Gita Society [Home] Other sites on Lord Shiva: SIVASAHASRANAMA The Greatness of Lord Shiva Lord Shiva More on Shiva Introduction The Story of King Chitrabhanu Spiritual Significance of the Ritual Lord Shiva's Assuarance Introduction This falls on the 13th (or 14th) day of the dark half of Phalgun (February-March). The name means "the night of Shiva". The ceremonies take place chiefly at night. This is a festival observed in honour of Lord Shiva. Shiva was married to Parvati on this day. People observe a strict fast on this day. Some devotees do not even take a drop of water. They keep vigil all night. The Shiva Lingam is worshipped throughout the night by washing it every three hours with milk, curd, honey, rose water, etc., whilst the chanting of the Mantra Om Namah Shivaya continues. Offerings of bael leaves are made to the Lingam. Bael leaves are very sacred as, it is said, Lakshmi resides in them. Hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, such as the Shiva Mahimna Stotra of Pushpadanta or Ravana's Shiva Tandava Stotra are sung with great fervour and devotion. People repeat the Panchakshara Mantra, Om Namah Shivaya. He who utters the Names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with perfect devotion and concentration, is freed from all sins. He reaches the abode of Shiva and lives there happily. He is liberated from the wheel of births and deaths. Many pilgrims flock to the places where there are Shiva temples. The Story of King Chitrabhanu In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma, whilst resting on the bed of arrows and discoursing on Dharma, refers to the observance of Maha Shivaratri by King Chitrabhanu.
