A Short Guide For Participants of the 15th International Stellarator Workshop, 3rd to 7th October 2005

The Local Organizing Committee is providing this short guide for participants. We hope that it will be useful to 15th International Stellarator Workshop participants. It gives information on how to get to and from the airport, Hotel Convencion and Ciemat as well as other details on the Workshop. There is also some basic eating out advice. We hope that it is of use to our guests.

Out and about in Madrid

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: Opening hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm. It is closed Mondays. The general entrance fee is 6 Euro, and extended fee is 9 Euro. See http://www.museothyssen.org/ for more details.

Details of other museums can be found at http://www.flg.es/links/museosmadrid.htm. Eating out in Madrid Lunch will be provided to participants every day from Monday to Friday during the Workshop. There is also a reception at Ciemat on the Monday afternoon and the conference dinner on the Thursday evening at 9 pm (Restaurant La Posada de la Villa, Calle Cava Baja No. 9, 28005 Madrid). As many participants will be staying over for a weekend, and many will want to eat out at night in the city, we provide a short guide to eating customs. It is impossible however to give a list of restaurants covering all tastes and prices so we suggest that you check the web at http://www.thingstodo-madrid.com/ or in any good guide book.

Breakfast This is usually eaten in a bar and most madrileños have little more than a coffee and a sweet roll or croissant for breakfast. Coffee should be ordered as café solo (black), café cortado (with a small drop of milk), café con leche (half coffee/half milk). Freshly squeezed orange juice is also popular and widely available. Probably the most traditional Spanish breakfast is churros or porras with hot melted chocolate.

Lunch Eaten between about 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm, it is probably more appropriate to refer to this meal as dinner as it is the principal meal of the day for many madrileños. Virtually all restaurants offer a lunchtime menú (Menú del Día) which is invariably much better value (7 to 12 Euro) than an a la carte selection. A menu is usually a three-course meal, with a limited amount of choice for each course, and generally includes house wine. The first course can be as light as a bowl of soup of a salad, or as hearty as a bowl if lentils with chorizo. The second course will probably be selection between fish and meat or poultry. Desert will often be a choice of fruit or some sort of pudding.

Evening Meal Madrileños eat their evening meal quite late in comparison to other countries - anywhere from 9 pm to 11 pm is reasonable, particularly at weekends. While some people have a full meal at dinner many have a light meal, which might consist of a few tapas. It may be difficult to find a local restaurant serving earlier than 9 pm although tapa bars and chain restaurants serve at all hours.

Tipping Tipping is not so rigid in Spain. It is quite common to leave no tip, either in bars, taxis etc. Generally, if service is good, a tip of 5-10% is more than adequate.

Shopping The most popular large department store in Madrid is El Corte Ingles (http://www.elcorteingles.es/). There you can buy souvenirs, typical foodstuffs, clothes, electronic goods, CDs, tickets to shows and events as well as many more items. In most of the stores there is also a cafe and restaurant. The personnel at the information points speak English as do some of the floor attendants. There are many branches throughout Madrid, one is close to the Hotel Convencion (about five minutes) in Calle Goya and there is another at exit of the Nuevo Ministerios. Opening hours are from 10 am to 10 pm Monday to Saturday. El Corte Ingles will also open on Sunday the 2nd of October.

Pickpockets Like many cities Madrid is frequented by pickpockets who tend to target tourists. Please be careful of personal belongings when riding on the Metro. Do not keep wallets in back pockets and be aware of persons around you if you are standing up in the train and when you are about to get on or off the train. You should also be careful if visiting areas of the cities frequented by tourists such as Plaza del Sol, or Gran Vía. Also when in bars or cafeterias please keep an eye on your belongings and do not leave then unattended. The hotel room is equipped with a safety deposit box if you wish to lave valuables there.

Workshop Tours and Conference Dinner The Stellarator Workshop LOC has organized two tours of Madrid for participants. These tours will depart from CIEMAT on Thursday afternoon just after lunch (1.15 pm) and will take about 4 hours. Once the tours have finished participants will be returned to the Hotel Convención so that they can prepare for the Conference Dinner which begins at 9 pm. It will be help on the Thursday evening at 9 pm (Restaurant La Posada de la Villa, Calle Cava Baja No. 9, 28005 Madrid). Coaches will depart Hotel Convención approx. 45 minutes the Conference Dinner and take participants to the restaurant. Please note that the Tours and Conference Dinner are free to participants who have paid the registration fee and to accompanying persons who have paid the additional fee.

In order to help ensure a smooth planning of these tours the LOC would kindly request that participants who are interested in these tours please mail to [email protected] indicating their preference A or B by the 14th of September. After this date the LOC cannot guarantee that participants will be able to follow the visit of choice, as the number of places is limited on each tour.

Tour A. A Panoramic Tour of Madrid followed by a Visit to the Prado Museum This is a tour of central Madrid by coach with an official guide to explain and describe the sites as well as the typical custom and characteristics of Madrid City. It will follow the areas of Madrid developed during the reigns of the Borborn and Austrian kings as well as more modern districts. Participants will see many of the elegant squares and avenues, for instance the Plaza de Oriente where the Royal Palace is situated, Gran Vía, a busy commercial street in the heart of the city, and the Paseo de la Castellana, a broad tree-lined avenue that divides the city between east and west. Finally the tour will arrive at the Prado Museum where participants will be able to view many of the masterpieces on show there. The Prado Museum is the most famous museum in Spain and it holds a large collection of paintings and sculptures by Spanish masters such as El Greco, Veláquez, and Goya and international masters such as Rafeal, Rubens and Caravaggio.

Tour B. A Visit to the Royal Palace followed by a Guided Tour of old Madrid This tour will begin with a visit to the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace, located close to the city centre, was built during the XVIII century by the Bourbon kings. About 50 of its many rooms are opened to the public. These include the principal stairway, the Salon de Alabarderos, the Hall of Columns, the Gala Dining Room, the Music Room, and the Throne room. The palace is still used for official occasions and for Royal receptions. Visitors can also walk about its large courtyard and visit the armoury museum or the royal pharmacy.

After the visit, participants will be brought on a guided tour to the oldest parts of Madrid City located in an area known as Madrid of the Austrians. It has been restored in recent years and has become a very popular area of the city with its narrow streets and hidden squares, as well as inviting tapa bars, cafes, and restaurants. The conference dinner will be held in a well- known and very popular restaurant in this area. After the tour participants can return to the Hotel Convención by coach. CIEMAT
