These monuments are recorded both descriptively and photographically and particular emphasis has been placed on a detailed analysis of the Hiberno-Saxon abstract ornament, the patterns used and, where possible, the way in which they were constructed. -
The Book Within the Book in Mediaeval Illumination
THE BOOK WITHIN THE BOOK IN MEDIAEVAL ILLUMINATION James Finn Cotter From early Christian times up to the sixteenth century, books occur so of ten in mediaeval illumination that a study of the book as it appears within the book would involve a survey of the whole course of Western miniature painting. Despite its ubiquity, however, little has been written on the sub ject of the symbolism of the book in art. In The Idea of the Book in the Middle Ages, Jesse M. Gellrich takes a semiotic approach rather than the viewpoint of art history. Ernst Curtius has a chapter on “The Book as a Symbol” in his classic European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages, but he does not concern himself with artistic representation. Even so, he ad mits, “The subject, so far as I am aware, has hitherto been touched upon by no one but Goethe” (302). The same is true of the presence of the book in art. In this paper, I will offer examples from four areas of illumination in which books are featured: Christ in Majesty, the Four Evangelists (with particular attention to St John), St Jerome and others with books, and the Virgin Mary in the Annunciation and with the Writing Child. The book will be considered here not only as an object but also as a symbol, for it is a richly complex entity that retains a sacred meaning throughout its more than thousand-year history. We must, then, first turn to the meaning of the book before tracing its appearance in illumination. -

Finch, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 This dissertation examines New York Public Library Spencer ms. 22, a fourteenth- century French Bible en images (narrative picture Bible), and its relationship with the picture Bible of King Sancho VII of Navarre (Amiens, Bibliothèque municipale ms. 108), completed in the year 1197. Previous scholarship on these manuscripts has described Spencer 22 as a copy of Sancho’s Bible, based on the close similarity of visual narrative content and iconography found in Spencer 22 and its predecessor. The range of aesthetic and linguistic differences between the manuscripts, however, signifies a process more akin to translation, a term that better expresses the relationship between Sancho’s Bible and Spencer 22, as well as the specific needs of its patron, Jeanne II of Navarre. -

Of Italian origins, Christine had moved with her family to the Valois court of Charles V in approximately 1368. The French king had invited her father, a professor at the University of Bologna, to Paris as his personal physician and court astrologer. Surrounded by the nascent humanism encouraged by the French monarch, Christine gained the rudiments of a classical education, including the notarial script with which she would early support herself and her family upon the deaths of her husband and father. Having begun by writing lyric poetry for her personal use, the author created the Epistle of Othea mixing poetry and prose, using the format of earlier Latin works. -

It offers a new model for examining the cognitive role of images by studying an important medieval encyclopedia, On the Properties of Things, originally written in Latin by Bartholomaeus Anglicus in the thirteenth century. Bartholomaeus’ text was the most popular encyclopedia of the later middle ages and four vernacular translations were produced and circulated between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. -

Books from Ireland, Fifth to Ninth Centuries Richard Sharpe Abstract . The first part is concerned with extant books produced in Ireland and surviving elsewhere, the second with texts composed there but transmitted through copies made elsewhere, which alone survive. I also investigate text-historical evidence that allows one to trace copies of Late Antique texts from Ireland into seventh-century Northumbria, further evidence of the export of books from Ireland. The external survival of books made in Ireland, of texts composed in Ireland but not preserved there, and of texts read in Ireland and exported provides a counterweight to any positivist argument from the paucity of early medieval books made and preserved in Ireland that Irish book-culture was not as advanced as Bede’s or Aldhelm’s references would suggest. A similar case may be derived from vernacular texts. The only early manuscripts containing substantial quantities of Old Irish have survived on the Continent, but a large body of Old Irish texts has survived in Ireland, though few extant copies are anywhere near as old as the texts. Early Irish book-culture is therefore attested both through early manuscripts not in Ireland and through early texts not surviving in early Irish copies. The early medieval manuscripts preserved in Ireland, such as the gospel books of Durrow and Kells, have survived because of their spe- cial status as relics. Comparison with the evidence of manuscripts and texts from Africa and Spain in the early middle ages puts the Irish material into perspective.
