The Volcanic Foundation of Dutch Architecture: Use of Rhenish Tuff and Trass in the Netherlands in the Past Two Millennia
The volcanic foundation of Dutch architecture: Use of Rhenish tuff and trass in the Netherlands in the past two millennia Timo G. Nijland 1, Rob P.J. van Hees 1,2 1 TNO, PO Box 49, 2600 AA Delft, the Netherlands 2 Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands Occasionally, a profound but distant connection between volcano and culture exists. This is the case between the volcanic Eifel region in Germany and historic construction in the Netherlands, with the river Rhine as physical and enabling connection. Volcanic tuff from the Eifel comprises a significant amount of the building mass in Dutch built heritage. Tuffs from the Laacher See volcano have been imported and used during Roman occupation (hence called Römer tuff). It was the dominant dimension stone when construction in stone revived from the 10th century onwards, becoming the visual mark of Romanesque architecture in the Netherlands. Römer tuff gradually disappeared from the market from the 12th century onwards. Early 15th century, Weiberner tuff from the Riedener caldera, was introduced for fine sculptures and cladding; it disappears from use in about a century. Late 19th century, this tuff is reintroduced, both for restoration and for new buildings. In this period, Ettringer tuff, also from the Riedener caldera, is introduced for the first time. Ground Römer tuff (Rhenish trass) was used as a pozzolanic addition to lime mortars, enabling the hydraulic engineering works in masonry that facilitated life and economics in the Dutch delta for centuries. Key words: Tuff, trass, Eifel, the Netherlands, natural stone 1 Introduction Volcanic tuffs have been used as building stone in many countries over the world. -

ENGLISH BOOKS in the NETHERLANDS in the EIGHTEENTH CENTURY: REPRINTS OR PIRACIES? the Title of This Paper Accurately and Deliber
ENGLISH BOOKS IN THE NETHERLANDS IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY: REPRINTS OR PIRACIES? JOHN FEATHER The title of this paper accurately and deliberately reflects the insularity of many book historians in Britain. In histories of printing, publishing and the book trade in Britain, including the present author's, other countries tend to appear, if at all, in minor roles as customers, sup pliers or pirates. In one sense, this approach can be justified. The English book trade (confining ourselves to England and not the other countries of the British Isles) was for much of its history a deeply insular trade. England was the only country in Europe other than Germany where printing was introduced by a native, and the only one in which the output of books in the vernacular outstripped printing in Latin almost from the start. In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, when the long and persistent traditions of the British book trade were being established, England was a war-torn kingdom which occupied part of an offshore island still on the edge of the known and accessible world, whose inhabitants spoke a multi-dialect language which was almost unknown outside its own country. From its very beginning, the printing trade in England was concerned with the production of English books for an English market. Britain's re-entry onto the wider European stage, delayed by her civil wars in the seventeenth century, was confirmed when William III, Prince of Orange, became King of England in 1689 following what came to be called the Glorious Revolution. For the next century, the ties between the United Kingdom and the United Provinces were not only dynastically close. -

August 2013 Issue of Concordia News
Concordia News – Large Print August 2013 A newsletter for members, families, Volume 8 and friends of Number 8 Concordia Lutheran Church and Concordia Cemetery Association ISSN 2152-3339 Contents Page Words from Pastor Bruce ………………. 2 Announcements …………………………….. 7 Obituary: Gordon Swanson ……………. 9 With Our Thanks …….……………………… 11 Recipe of the Month ………………………. 13 Bits and Pieces ………………………………. 14 Dates to Remember …..………….………. 18 Acknowledgements ……………………….. 19 From Pastor Bruce Dear Members and Friends of Concordia Lutheran: Here is the final portion of the excellent summary about Pentecost from the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. It is evident that the phrase “out of sight is out of mind” applies to the longest season of the church year, but then Martin Luther did refer that the Holy Spirit, which is the centerpiece of the season of Pentecost, is the “bashful member of the Trinity”, nonetheless, as the Holy Spirit is the ongoing presence of God in the world, it is important that we do not forget about the Spirit. We are not in this life alone; God is with us: The Lutheran church of the Baroque observed three days of Pentecost. Some composers wrote sacred cantatas to be performed in the church services of these days. Johann Sebastian Bach composed several cantatas for days of Pentecost, including Erschallet, ihr Lieder, erklinget, ihr Saiten ! BWV 172 in 1714 and Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt , BWV 68 in 1725. Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel 2 From Pastor Bruce wrote cantatas such as Werdet voll Geistes (Get full of spirit) in 1737. Mozart composed an antiphon Veni Sancte Spiritus in 1768. Olivier Messiaen composed an organ mass Messe de la Pentecôte in 1949/50. -
Rhodes Bleachworks Brass Band
Rhodes Bleachworks Brass Band Gavin Holman – June 2019 This band was probably formed in the mid-1890s. The first known mention is its appearance at a contest at Middleton in April 1897. It was strongly linked to the Bleach and Dye Works at Rhodes, near Middleton. The band’s conductor for most of its life was John H. White. It was disbanded on 9th December 1909. The Bleach Works was Obadiah Ashworth and Co. (bleachers, dyers, finishers, embossers, &c.), Rhodes Bleach and Dye Works, Middleton. It was one of several similar industries in Rhodes and Middleton, part of the larger fabric, weaving, finishing, and garment manufacturing industrial belt in northern Manchester and across to Yorkshire. Obadiah Ashworth founded the company and went into partnership with James W. Jones. Upon the death of Ashworth in 1874, James Jones continued the business as sole owner, but retained the Ashworth name. He was later instrumental in establishing and supporting the Bleachworks Band. In addition to these brief notes, the band’s Treasurer’s Notebook, covering the years 1898 to 1909, is transcribed below. This is followed by a brief sketch of the conductor John White. No known photographs of the band survive, although at least four “formal” photos were taken, as recorded in the Treasurer’s notebook. A typical concert of the band, at St Michael's Flags park, in August 1903, with conductor J.H. White, consisted of: Hymn; March: Silver Trumpets (Viviani); Overture: Poet & Peasant (Suppé); Fantasia: Joan of Arc (Round); Trombone solo: Ora Pro Nobilis (Piccolomini); Selection: Idomeneo (Mozart); Air Varie: Eventide (Rimmer); Chorus: The Heavens are Telling (Haydn). -

FORUM | SPECIAL ISSUE 03 Walker 1 The Lindisfarne Gospels: A Living Manuscript Margaret Walker The University of Edinburgh This article questions how current and previous owners have marked the Lindisfarne Gospels, created 1,300 years ago. Their edits, which would be frowned upon today, are useful for historians to understand how the Gospels have been valued by previous owners and thus why they are so treasured today. The Lindisfarne Gospels are on display in the treasures gallery of the British Library. The eighth- century Insular manuscript is opened and accompanied by a short caption with information about the work. i It is presented as a 1,300-year-old masterpiece, which has survived to the present day against the odds of time. -
Soen – Imperial
