Books from the Library of Professor Frank Willett. Frank Willett (1925–2006) was widely regarded as the leading Africanist of his day. He became the Keeper of the Department of Ethnology at the Manchester Museum in 1950. In 1956 he was encouraged by William and Bernard Fagg to take up an excavation in Nigeria where he worked during the late 1950s and early 1960s as Archaeologist for the Department of Antiquities and Curator of the Ife Museum. Ten years was spent as Professor in African Studies at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, after which he returned to Britain to become the first director of the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow. -

The Postcolonial African Museum in the Age of Cultural Informatics O Museu Africano Pós-Colonial na Era da Informática Cultural1 Sylvester Okwunodu Ogbechie, Ph.D. Departamento de Arquitetura e História da Arte, University of California Santa Barbara, EUA. Resumo: O artigo avalia como a informática cultural pode auxiliar a definição de estratégias de gestão do patrimônio cultural para museus africanos pós-coloniais por meio da aplicação de novas tecnologias de mídia. A ascensão da tecnologia da informação abriu novas formas para análise do patrimônio cultural. Definido como “informática cultural”, esse novo campo avalia como as instituições culturais organizam as informações sobre os seus recursos e usam essas informações para desenvolver novas estratégias de representação cultural e análise. Ao adaptar seus protocolos às pesquisas na área de ciências humanas na era da informação, a informática cultural apoia a pesquisa interdisciplinar em múltiplas conjunções, oposições e sinergias entre informação, historicismo e contextos culturais, e, neste caso particular, nas áreas de história da arte, museologia e economia do patrimônio cultural. Sua pesquisa investiga o significado do cânone da arte africana nos contextos duplos de museus ocidentais e africanos na era con- temporânea. Pretende estimular a reflexão sobre como a arte africana nativa é incorporada aos sistemas de conhecimento ocidentais e às estruturas específicas de exibição de museus. Sugere como museus africanos pós-coloniais podem garantir maior acesso ao patrimônio cultural afri- cano e também definir os modos de representação museológica relevantes para a exposição do patrimônio cultural africano em contextos africanos, já que museus continuam a enfrentar a opressiva localização de objetos de arte africana (com status historicamente aceito) em museus e coleções de arte ocidentais. -

Access: Open for research Administrative Information Acquisition: Purchase, 1990 (R12142) Processed by: Bob Taylor, 2008 Repository: The University of Texas at Austin, Harry Ransom Center The Transcription Centre, circa 1962-1977 Organizational History The Transcription Centre began its brief but significant life in February 1962 under the direction of Dennis Duerden (1927-2006), producing and distributing radio programs for and about Africa. Duerden was a graduate of Queen’s College, Oxford and had served as principal of the Government Teachers’ College at Keffi, Nigeria and later as producer of the Hausa Service of the BBC. As an artist and educator with experience in West Africa, as well as a perceptive critic of African art he was a natural in his new post. The Transcription Centre was created with funding provided initially by the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) to foster non-totalitarian cultural values in sub-Saharan Africa in implicit opposition to Soviet-encouraged committed political attitudes among African writers and artists. Much of the CCF’s funding and goals were subsequently revealed to have come from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. The stress between the CCF’s presumed wish to receive value for their investment in the Transcription Centre and Duerden’s likely belief that politically-based programming would alienate the very audience it sought permeated his activities throughout his years with the radio service. -

INTRODUCTION The 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture will take place in Nigeria from January 15 to February 12, 1977. It is a momentous event which will have profound effect on the lives of Black and African peoples throughout the world. The Festival represents an effort to bring together all Black and African peoples so as to set in motion a new cultural awake- ning in the interest of their collective existence and progress. 7.5 countries and communities have signified their intention to take part in the Festival. It is estimated that 15,000 artistes and officials will participate and that over 35,000 visitors from all over the world will attend the Festival. The information in this booklet is designed to assist visitors in planning their trip to Nigeria and make their visit comfortable. Thus far the only people who have been attested with a high level of research to be the descendants of the ancient Mesopotamians are the Assyrian Christians of Iraq and its surrounding areas. Assyria continued to exist as a geo political entity until the Arab-Islamic conquest in the mid 7th century AD, and Assyrian identity, personal names and evolutions of Mesopotamian Aramaic (which still contain many Akkadian loan words) have survived among the Assyrian people from ancient times to this day. (see Assyrian people). However, there have been many claims of ancient mid eastern ancestry (including Assyrian) throughout Europe, Africa (Afrocentric) and even the Americas, none of which have been supported by mainstream opinion or strong evidence, let alone proof. The most long standing and popularised theory has been the attempts to link Assyrian ancestry to the ancient Germans. The Assyria-Germany connection has an early precedent in Jerome, who compared the Germanic invaders of his day to the threats to the Kingdom of Israel described in the Bible, quoting Psalms 83:8, "Assur also is joined with them":[30] The whole country between the Alps and the Pyrenees, between the Rhine and the Ocean, has been laid waste by hordes of Quadi, Vandals, Sarmatians, Alans, Gepids, Herules, Saxons, Burgundians, Allemanni and—alas! for the commonweal!—even Pannonians.
