President’s Message - Fall / Winter 2015

Welcome to the Fall/Winter issue of the Sheridan Times. It’s hard to believe that summer has come and gone already and that we are already heading into the cool Fall nights - great for evening walks and ideal sleeping weather. SHORA was busy this summer between our successful 2nd annual garage sale in May, our pool party in June (see page 7) and our 9th annual Shakespeare in the Park (see page 5) which ran for 3 days this year (vs. 2 in the past) and saw attendance exceed 550 people. I attended a fun street party on Barnstone Crescent in August which makes me want to organize one on my own street. What a great way to meet the neighbours and share stories of life in the Homelands! Fall will continue to be busy with our annual Pumpkin Parade on Nov 1st (see page 14) and Christmas Lights contest (see page 5).

Our Annual General Meeting is set for Thursday December 3rd (see details on page 13). At that time I will be stepping down after 5 years as your President. I will be staying on the Board as Past-President assisting Pieter Kool who will act as interim President for the 2015-2016 term. I would like to thank the Board and all our volunteers for all their great work. We have accomplished much together and we look YourYour Sheridandan Homelands Specialistscialists forward to continuing to bring the Homelands community together in new and unique ways. We will have room for at least 2 more people on the SHORA board (we have a maximum of 12 spaces) so raise your hand at the AGM if you want to contribute to YOUR community. See my Angelo D’Amico Broker Former NHL linesman article on page 7 for what’s involved in being part of the SHORA board . We continue to need volunteers to maintain the rink so let us know 905 828 6550 ADREALESTATE.CA at [email protected] if you can help out. A new initiative that SHORA participated in recently was the Meet the Federal election candidates on Oct 6th (see pg. 9) at which I had the privilege of being moderator for the evening. It was the second collaboration of the 12 ratepayers associations (of which SHORA is a member) that make up the Southwest Mississauga Ratepayers Associations (SWMRA) . We hope to make this “Meet the Candidates” evening a regular event at election times. As part of our Speaker Series brought to you by the SWMRA stay tuned for an e-blast reminding you of the Nov 25th evening meeting with Mayor Bonnie Crombie where you will hear the latest of what’s happening in Mississauga as well have the opportunity to ask her questions.

As always please feel free to email us at [email protected] , visit www.shora.ca , and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We want to hear from you so don’t be shy!

See you around the Homelands!

2 Shakespeare in Thornlodge Park

By Denise Gilliland and Pieter Kool

The Eighth Annual Shakespeare in the Park was a resounding success as the Humber River Shakespeare Company returned to Thorn Lodge Park for the sixth year running. For three nights in July, members of the Sheridan Homelands and surrounding communi - ties welcomed the cast, headed by Sarah Moyle and Kevin Hammond performing William Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” Six actors ingeniously played 18 different roles of Shakespeare’s most purely farcical of all his plays. If you missed it, the short story is:

Sir John Falstaff plans to seduce Mrs. Page and Mrs. Ford, the wives of two prominent Windsor citizens. The women soon realize his plan and begin to play along, leading him on hoping to eventually expose him and his ploy. Mr. Ford creates a disguise himself and hires Falstaff to obtain Mrs. Ford for him in order to expose her suspected infidelity. Hilarity ensues as the ladies continue to trick Falstaff and put him in some interesting predicaments, including hiding in laundry baskets whenever Mr. Ford came home, and finally when both the husbands and the wives work to expose Falstaff together. In the end Falstaff ends up as a laughing stock while the merry band continues on

Residents brought lawn chairs, picnic blankets and snacks and settled in for three evenings of Shakespearean wit and humour. The Humber River players added their own unique flair to the show by incorporating contemporary music, dance, flamboyant costumes and puppets. Kids’ Club Each year the show has become increasingly popular with over five hundred people in attendance over the three performances. Cold water was provided to members of the HomeworkHHoomework audience by Reflex Medical Centre , 3470 Laird Road, Unit 1. Its very encouraging to see how the attendance has grown from 200 to well over 550 patrons. SHORA is proud to continue the tradition of Shakespeare in Thorn Lodge Park piling up?p? and are planning to book next year’s performances. Despite all of the volunteer help in operating the show and displaying lawn signs, it always amazes us what the cost is to promote the event. SHORA is looking for corporate sponsors to help offset these expenses of the event including park rental and fees for the city, signage etc. The Our tutorsutorss Humber River Shakespeare actors do not charge SHORA and rely on donations from the can helphelp!! patrons by passing the hat: pay what you can. Saturday February 20th, 2016 @ 5:30pm Who was this fellow Don Gould? 1st Homelands Scouting Group & Naguib Kerba By Tim Tibbs EUCHRE CHALLENGE In the Spring/Summer 2015 issue of the Times I related how my grand - children and I found a true hidden park area across the creek running through Don Gould Park. I ended the article with the pledge to find out who this Don Gould fellow is or was.

Well, unfortunately he is a ‘was’.

The city has told me that the park was named after Donald Louis Gould, who was responsible for starting the Sheridan Baseball Association. He was an active resident in the community through volunteering as a hockey coach, lacrosse coach, and equipment manager for the Erindale Lacrosse Association. Mr. Gould passed away on June 5, 1996. To acknowledge the dedication and hard work that Mr. Gould had done to develop the com - munity, Don Gould Park was named on November 26, 1997.

Homeowner Nancy Woods was able to help me as well. She had a friend who used to live here who told her that Don Gould moved into the Sheri - dan Homelands in the ‘60’s, and lived on Glamworth Cresent. He and his wife, Donna, had four children – Tim, Laurie, Colleen and Paul.

She believes he was a firefighter. He was very involved in developing the different associations within the Homelands – baseball, homeowners… he was always the guy at fireworks day doing the set-up.

Well sounds like he was quite a guy.

16 17 Running in the Homelands By Leslie Leaver

I often get asked why I run. There are many reasons. The obvious and Insurance & Financial Services Inc. easy answer is I run for my health. Another reason is the joy it gives me; feeling the summer's heat and winter's chill all while pushing myself People you trust ~ Insurance that works! forward. Autumn is my favourite time to run. The air is crisp, the trees have beautiful colours and I love the sound of the fallen leaves crunch - ing underfoot.

Running may seem intimidating but really all you need is a decent pair of shoes and the desire to see how far you can go! Even if it's just to the corner, it is a start.

When we first moved into the Homelands I explored our new neighbour - hood by first walking, and then running. I wondered why the street sign said that Hollington intersected with Hollington until I ran all the way around. I discovered many of the quirky intricacies of the neighbour - hood, like why is there a yield sign at the one end of Jenner and not a stop sign? Running the streets, I watched as older homes were gutted and the For Sale signs quickly changed to Sold signs. Eventually, I started waving to my new neighbours as I ran by and soon after I slowed to talk.

By Ben Robinson

The Story Garden is a bright and beautiful, non-profit literacy centre that provides a variety of programs for children and their families in the Sheri - dan Centre. The Story Garden opened its doors in Sept 2012, with the support and generous donation of a wonderful 2500 square feet of space by Bentall Kennedy L.P. and the management of the Sheridan Centre.

The Story Garden is a safe and inviting place, conveniently located beside the Food Court, that develops literacy skills and relationships. It's an exciting place for children, their parents and families to come and learn, explore, read, and investigate. Story Time Stops on Thursday evenings are an amazing opportunity to build relationships and language skills. It is a great community asset for everyone. The children are able to expand their literacy confidence, make new friends and be a part of something magical.
