President’s Message - Fall / Winter 2015 Welcome to the Fall/Winter issue of the Sheridan Times. It’s hard to believe that summer has come and gone already and that we are already heading into the cool Fall nights - great for evening walks and ideal sleeping weather. SHORA was busy this summer between our successful 2nd annual garage sale in May, our pool party in June (see page 7) and our 9th annual Shakespeare in the Park (see page 5) which ran for 3 days this year (vs. 2 in the past) and saw attendance exceed 550 people. I attended a fun street party on Barnstone Crescent in August which makes me want to organize one on my own street. What a great way to meet the neighbours and share stories of life in the Homelands! Fall will continue to be busy with our annual Pumpkin Parade on Nov 1st (see page 14) and Christmas Lights contest (see page 5). Our Annual General Meeting is set for Thursday December 3rd (see details on page 13). At that time I will be stepping down after 5 years as your President. I will be staying on the Board as Past-President assisting Pieter Kool who will act as interim President for the 2015-2016 term. I would like to thank the Board and all our volunteers for all their great work. We have accomplished much together and we look YourYour Sheridandan Homelands Specialistscialists forward to continuing to bring the Homelands community together in new and unique ways. We will have room for at least 2 more people on the SHORA board (we have a maximum of 12 spaces) so raise your hand at the AGM if you want to contribute to YOUR community. See my Angelo D’Amico Broker Former NHL linesman article on page 7 for what’s involved in being part of the SHORA board . Dayana Hameed and son of Hockey Hall of Fame Sales Representative NHL linesman John D’Amico We continue to work with the City of Mississauga to make our skating rink in Thorn Lodge Park bigger and better. Shawn Lancaster of the SHORA Board is in discussions with the Parks and Recreation department to level the ground for a better ice surface as well the Want to know what your home is worth? We continue to need volunteers to maintain the rink so let us know 905 828 6550 ADREALESTATE.CA at [email protected] if you can help out. A new initiative that SHORA participated in recently was the Meet the Federal election candidates on Oct 6th (see pg. 9) at which I had the privilege of being moderator for the evening. It was the second collaboration of the 12 ratepayers associations (of which SHORA is a member) that make up the Southwest Mississauga Ratepayers Associations (SWMRA) . We hope to make this “Meet the Candidates” evening a regular event at election times. As part of our Speaker Series brought to you by the SWMRA stay tuned for an e-blast reminding you of the Nov 25th evening meeting with Mayor Bonnie Crombie where you will hear the latest of what’s happening in Mississauga as well have the opportunity to ask her questions. As always please feel free to email us at [email protected] , visit www.shora.ca , and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We want to hear from you so don’t be shy! See you around the Homelands! For three nights in July, members of the Sheridan Homelands and surrounding communi - ties welcomed the cast, headed by Sarah Moyle and Kevin Hammond performing William Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” Six actors ingeniously played 18 different roles of Shakespeare’s most purely farcical of all his plays. If you missed it, the short story is: Sir John Falstaff plans to seduce Mrs. Page and Mrs. Ford, the wives of two prominent Windsor citizens. The women soon realize his plan and begin to play along, leading him on hoping to eventually expose him and his ploy. Mr. Ford creates a disguise himself and hires Falstaff to obtain Mrs. Ford for him in order to expose her suspected infidelity. Hilarity ensues as the ladies continue to trick Falstaff and put him in some interesting predicaments, including hiding in laundry baskets whenever Mr. Ford came home, and finally when both the husbands and the wives work to expose Falstaff together. In the end Falstaff ends up as a laughing stock while the merry band continues on Residents brought lawn chairs, picnic blankets and snacks and settled in for three evenings of Shakespearean wit and humour. The Humber River players added their own unique flair to the show by incorporating contemporary music, dance, flamboyant costumes and puppets. Kids’ Club Each year the show has become increasingly popular with over five hundred people in attendance over the three performances. Cold water was provided to members of the HomeworkHHoomework audience by Reflex Medical Centre , 3470 Laird Road, Unit 1. Its very encouraging to see how the attendance has grown from 200 to well over 550 patrons. SHORA is proud to continue the tradition of Shakespeare in Thorn Lodge Park piling up?p? and are planning to book next year’s performances. Despite all of the volunteer help in operating the show and displaying lawn signs, it always amazes us what the cost is to promote the event. SHORA is looking for corporate sponsors to help offset these expenses of the event including park rental and fees for the city, signage etc. The Our tutorsutorss Humber River Shakespeare actors do not charge SHORA and rely on donations from the can helphelp!! patrons by passing the hat: pay what you can.
