Strategy is the calculated relationship of means to ends. At the highest military level, that relationship guides the use of the joint and combined military instrument of power to achieve national military strategic objectives. At the national or grand strategic level, the relationship becomes more complex, dealing with multiple, interrelated objectives that can only be achieved by the coordinated use of all the instruments of national power, to include that of the military. In a rapidly changing, increasingly more complicated and interdependent world, the U.S. military professional needs to u

States from 1815 to the present. The American theory of naval strategy, on the other hand, assumed that one had to engage the enemy in order to assure command of the sea. World War I, the first "total war" in history, set in motion profound changes in the economies, demographics, and philosophies of the warring states. In this book, leading experts on the Great War discuss its causes, character, and legacy. The analysis of the Great War, in fact, provides an essential framework for our understanding of the entire twentieth century. The book draws together military history, international history, and cultural history to offer a wide-ranging summary of current knowledge and debate regarding the First World War.Contributors to this volume:Modris Eksteins, Gerald Feldman, William C. Fuller, Jr., Mary R. Habeck, Holger H. Herwig, John Horne, Michael Howard, A. S. Kanya-Forstner, Leonard V. Smith, Zara Steiner, David Stevenson. In this original interpretation of events leading up to World War II, the author argues that the war was a European civil war brought about not only by conflicts between states, but also by a breakdown within European society as a whole. The text analyzes this breakdown as it affected the European Armed Forces, and proposes that the military contributed to the problem by its failure to master new applications of technology - and its equally great failure to present civilian leaders with viable strategic plans. "The Dead Hand of History" by Sally Spencer is the first novel in her series featuring recently promoted DCI Monika Paniatowski, former protégé of Charlie Woodend. Set in England in the early 70s, the book deals with two grisly murders that start with hands being chopped off. Sally Spencer's procedurals continue to be winners. This novel is a perfect transition from one lead character to a new one, with the aura of Charlie Woodend hanging over it. "How would Charlie handle it?" "Charlie would have solved it by now." Some procedurals are all plot and no charac

The untold story of Contemporary Christian Music is how did something that started out in California as alternate rock and later developed into pop and jazz- tinted songs end up being totally dominated by Country singers and centered in Nashville? You won't get the answer to that question from this book, which is heavily Nashville-centric. Three of the performers of the of top 10 songs listed live in Nashville, and as far as I can tell from reading the book, it's well-neigh impossible to make it as a CCM songwriter without living in Nashville. And if they had 250 great songs to pick from (as stated in the text), why didn't they include 250 songs in the book? One other problem--there is a companion CD set that is promoted in the book.

The characters are human, animal and hybrid, all caught in narratives of the imagination. The result is strangely compelling mystery, somewhat akin to a performance of sorts. Hardcover, 244 pages. Eva Hesse Spectres 1960 presents for the first time a group of nineteen oil paintings created when Hesse was just twenty-four years old. Composed of two bodies of work, the Spectres paintings present a young painter establishing her own creative identity. The first group of intimately scaled paintings features loosely rendered groups of figures related to yet spatially disconnected from one another. A group of larger paintings presents odd, otherworldly creatures that bear a distinct resemblance to the artist herself. Eva Hesse Spectres 1960 focuses on what curator E. Luanne McKinnon calls Hes...

Here is my brief(ish) summary of events surrounding Mike Oldfield's contractual arrangements with Virgin, according to the book 'Richard Branson - The Inside Story' Mick Brown (1988). The paradox of having Branson as both manager and head of the record company did not occur to Oldfield until 1976, by which time he had produced 3 albums which had sold enormous numbers and the contract had not once been reviewed. While a 5% rate may have been fair in 1972, Oldfield noticed that new, inexperienced artists were currently being signed at 8% or 9%, People such as Tom Newman were urging Oldfield to seek an improved arrangement with Virgin, but Mike would never challenge his friend Richard.

Richard I the Lionheart was crowned King of England September 3, 1189 and was a gifted military leader who played a central role in the Third Crusade. Born September 8, 1157, Richard the Lionheart was the third legitimate son of King Henry II of England. Often believed to have been the favorite son of his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard had three older siblings, William (died in infancy), Henry, and Matilda, as well as four younger, Geoffrey, Lenora, Joan, and John. As with many English rulers of the Plantagenet line, Richard was essentially French and his focus tended to lean toward the family's lands in France rather than England. Following the separation of his parents in 1167, Richard was invested duchy of Aquitaine.

Rich Is Better! Fanny Brice? Beatrice Kaufman? Yet, one well-heeled individual unapologetically proclaimed: Iâ™ve been rich and Iâ™ve been poor. And, believe me, rich is better. These words have been ascribed to entertainer Fanny Brice, singer Sophie Tucker, comedian Joe E. Lewis, writer Beatrice Kaufman, and others. What do you think?

As a result, I think business would be a weak choice if you intend to pursue higher education, but would be a strong choice if you are seeking to study for a vocational degree at a further education college. Choosing French At this stage, you have two major issues to consider: your choices of A levels and university admissions. In general, universities prefer harder subjects that create general foundational skills as opposed to vocational skills. Geography would also be a strong choice, as it combines science and a sense of international perspective. The world economy or global economy is the economy of the world, considered as the international exchange of goods and services that is expressed in monetary units of account. In some contexts, the two terms are distinguished: the "international" or "global economy" being measured separately and distinguished from national economies while the "world economy" is simply an aggregate of the separate countries' measurements. Beyond the minimum standard concerning value in production, use and exchange the

Although different economists have emphasized different facets of entrepreneurship, all economists who have written about it agree that at its core entrepreneurship involves judgment. But if people have perfect information, there is no need for judgment. Fortunately, economists have increasingly dropped the assumption of perfect information in recent years. According to Cantillon's original formulation, the entrepreneur is a specialist in taking on risk. He "insures" workers by buying their products (or their labor services) for resale before consumers have indicated how much they are willing to pay for them. The workers receives an assured income (in the short run, at least), while the entrepreneur bears the risk caused by price fluctuations in consumer markets.

By Roz Lewis. Richard Dunwoody is not a man to shy away from a challenge. Since retiring from horse racing in 1999 the self-confessed adventurer and critically acclaimed photographer, now 53, has trekked to both poles and walked 1,000 miles in as many hours, raising more than £250,000 for good causes in the process. But by his own admission his latest feat of endurance â“ an epic 2,000-mile walk from the south to the north of Japan to raise funds for the cancer charity Sarcoma UK after his nephew George, 21, was diagnosed with the disease â“ did not have an auspicious beginning.

The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place mostly during the 1930s, beginning in the United States. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations; in most countries it started in 1929 and lasted until the late-1930s. It was the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression of the 20th century. In the 21st century, the Great Depression is commonly used as an example of how intensely the world's economy can decline.

The Condition of the Working Class in England (German: Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England) is an 1845 book by the German philosopher Friedrich Engels, a study of the industrial working class in Victorian England. Engels' first book, it was originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England; an English translation was published in 1885. The history of Manchester encompasses its change from a minor Lancastrian township into the pre-eminent industrial metropolis of the United Kingdom and the world. Manchester began expanding "at an astonishing rate" around the turn of the 19th century as part of a process of unplanned urbanisation brought on by a boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. The transformation took little more than a century.

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county in North West England, with a population of 2,798,800. It encompasses one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United Kingdom and comprises ten metropolitan boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford. Greater Manchester was created on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972; and designated a city region on 1 April 2011.

Paris (Ancient Greek: ΠάÏις), also known as Alexander (ἈλÎξανδÏος, Aléxandros), the son of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy, appears in a number of Greek legends. Probably the best known was his elopement with Helen, queen of Sparta, this being one of the immediate causes of the Trojan War. Later in the war, he fatally wounds Achilles in the heel with an arrow as foretold by Achillesâ™s mother, Thetis. The name Paris is probably Luwian and comparable to Pari-zitis, attested as a Hittite scribe's name.

Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading Trojan Dialogues: The Memoirs of Diomedes. This novel is truly a "discovery," and deserves considerable acclaim. Cavallaro has reconciled many versions of the Trojan War myth with current archaeological research, and the result is a truly "believable" account of that conflict. This is clearly a plot-driven work, and the author's attention to detail is remarkable. There are no "loose ends" here; everything is carefully presented in a first-person narrative, as the hero (Diomedes) fills in the gaps with what he has learned subsequently. Where Homer sings of heroism and glory, Diomedes talks about the ho

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are used to describe a large variety of physical phenomena, from fluid flow to electromagnetic fields, and are indispensable to such disparate fields as aircraft simulation and computer graphics. While most existing texts on PDEs deal with either analytical or numerical aspects of PDEs, this innovative and comprehensive textbook features a unique approach that integrates analysis and numerical solution methods and includes a third componentâ”modelingâ”to address real-life problems.

Numerical partial differential equations is the branch of numerical analysis that studies the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). In this method, functions are represented by their values at certain grid points and derivatives are approximated through differences in these values. The method of lines (MOL, NMOL, NUMOL) is a technique for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) in which all but one dimension is discretized. George II was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 11/22 October 1727.[47] The composer George Frideric Handel was commissioned to write four new anthems for the coronation, including Zadok the Priest.[50]. It was widely believed that George would dismiss Walpole, who had distressed him by joining his father's government, and replace him with Sir Spencer Compton.[51] George asked Compton, rather than Walpole, to write his first speech as king for him, but Compton asked Walpole to draft it. Caroline advised George to retain Walpole, who continued to gain royal favour by securing a generous civi

In mathematics, topological graph theory is a branch of graph theory. It studies the embedding of graphs in surfaces, spatial embeddings of graphs, and graphs as topological spaces. It also studies immersions of graphs. Embedding a graph in a surface means that we want to draw the graph on a surface, a sphere for example, without two edges intersecting. A basic embedding problem often presented as a mathematical puzzle is the three-cottage problem. Breastfeeding and thrush is its own kind of special situation. Thrush is essentially a yeast infection on and around your nipples and inside the babyâ™s mouth. There is a yeast naturally found in your body called candida, but it can cause problems when the yeast grows out of control. Thrush can be a beast (I call it the âœyeast beastâ) and hard to get rid of. If your child has issues while nursing or you are experiencing pain, you could have thrush. There are several ways to treat thrush at home, but each thrush case is more successful by changing the diet as well. Letâ™s take a deeper look into

Breastfeeding is an unequalled way of providing ideal food for newborns [1]. It also has health benefits for mothers [2]. Given the importance of adequate breastfeeding of newborns, extensive efforts to promote breastfeeding have been implemented in many countries including China [3]. ... The nutrients of the breast milk are present in proper balance and are provided in bioavailable and easily digestible forms [2]. It also possesses remarkable immunological and anti- inflammatory properties that protect both mothers and children against various infections and diseases [3]. Hence, breastfeeding is considered as one of the most important factors for growth and development of infants.

The aim of research was to determine the influence of stages of lactation on the chemical composition and physical properties of sheep milk. The analysis involved a total of 202 milk samples in various stages of lactation (beginning, midpoint, end). Milk analyses included determination of the contents of dry matter, fat, protein, lactose, solids-non-fat, degree of acidity, pH values and freezing point. Data was statistically processed in accordance with the SAS statistics package (1996). Sheep milk contained on average 19.11% total solids, 7.52% fat, 5.90% protein, 4.55% lactose, 11.45% solids

Although pulp and paper manufacturing requires large amounts of energy, a portion of it comes from burning wood residue. The environmental impact of paper is significant, which has led to changes in industry and behaviour at both business and personal levels. Discarded paper and paperboard make up roughly 26% (or 67 million tons) of the 258 million tons of solid municipal waste generated in 2014 and over 14% of the 136 million tons solid municipal waste that ended up in landfills in 2014.[7] Paper waste, like other wastes, faces the additional hazard of toxic inks, dyes and polymers that could be potentially carcinogenic. when incinerated, or commingled with groundwater via traditional burial methods such as modern landfills. The environmental impact of paper is significant, which has led to changes in industry and behaviour at both business and personal levels. With the use of modern technology such as the printing press and the highly mechanized harvesting of wood, disposable paper became a relatively cheap commodity, which led to a high level of consumption and waste. The rise in global environmental issues such as air and water pollution, climate change, overflowing landfills and clearcutting have all lead to increased

A major part of Japanâ™s economic dysfunction for the past two decades has been the failure of its corporate structure under-pinned by dilapidated use of technology in the workplace, antiquated labour laws and poor corporate management. Many have seen Tokyoâ™s Shinjuku district feature in the film Blade Runner, others may have also seen the Maglev bullet train or ASIMO the robot. Either way Japan seems to be a country from the future. Many of its corporations however couldnâ™t be further from exactly that. Despite an ailing economy and numerous deficiencies within much of the corporate sector, itâ™s not all bad news for Japanese business. Japan still holds some of the best production techniques and some of the best companies in the world by sector.

These small traditional units differ from modern families in part in their economic interdependence with nearby family and community members, and in part in their attitudes towards family life (Hareven 1987). Evolution of the family. As they evolve, family and community structures adapt to the physical and social conditions of production (Wenke 1984). Similar evolutionary forces lead to changes in family dynamics and in child-rearing practices. The positive effects of change on the modern family mirror negative changes discussed below. Modernization has commercialized many aspects of life that depended previously on much less commercialized exchanges within the traditional extended family and community.

Changes in economic activity in Japan, by comparison, have not been directly reflected in the unem-ployment rate. Mercantilism in its simplest form is bullionism, yet mercantilist writers have emphasized the circulation of money and reject hoarding. Their emphasis on monetary metals accords with current ideas regarding the money supply, such as the stimulative effect of a growing money supply. The goal of mercantilist economic policies was to build up the state, especially in an age of incessant warfare, and the state should look for ways to strengthen the economy and to weaken foreign adversaries.[9]. In Europe, academic belief in mercantilism began to fade in the late 18th century, especially in Britain, in light of the arguments of Adam Smith and the classical economists.[10] The repeal of the Corn Laws by Robert Peel symbolized the emergence of free trade as an alternative system.

The economic relationship between Japan and the United States is not defined solely by the macroeconomic issues discussed in the previous two chapters. An important part of the story involves the volume and composition of tradeâ”the products and services each country exports and imports to and from the otherâ”and ultimately the impact of this trade on economic welfare in each society. The form and content of these public-policy interventions reflect a complex interaction of economic goals, domestic politics, bilateral pressures, and the constraints that the global environment imposes on both firms and governments. This chapter and chapter 5

The colloquium's objectives were to learn more about the Japanese civil service system, to compare it with other countries, and to draw some lessons for the developing and transition economies. The colloquium also evaluated examples of successful practices and lessons learned from civil service reform efforts in other countries. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the colloquium, with first a general discussion of civil service structural elements and the civil service's potential role in the economic development process. This is followed by a detailed look at the Japanese experience o

The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia [diˈviËna komˈmÉ›Ëdja]) is an Italian long narrative poem by Dante Alighieri, begun c. 1308 and completed in 1320, a year before his death in 1321. It is widely considered to be the preeminent work in Italian literature and one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world- view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan

It brings to an end a career and body of work that became increasingly original with the passage of time. From the beginning, Merrill was recognized as a master of verse forms and a prodigious technician. He always seemed to be at home with the most demanding requirements of poetry. Even as a young man, Merrill wrote with an almost Augustan control and intricacy. When he was twenty-oneâ”an undergraduate at Amherstâ”he was worried that his voice was âœclogged

His interests center on probability, measure theory, theoretical and applied statistics, and econometrics. He believes strongly that research and teaching (at all levels) should be intertwined. His book, Convergence of Stochastic Processes (Springer-Verlag, 1984), successfully introduced many researchers and graduate students to empirical process theory. Motivation SECTION 1 offers some reasons for why anyone who uses probability should know about the measure theoretic approach. SECTION 2 describes some of the added complications, and some of the compensating benefits that come with the rigorous treatment of probabilities as measures.

Empirical Processes in M-Estimation by. Sara van de Geer. Handout at New Directions in General Equilibrium Analysis. Cowles Workshop, Yale University June 15-20, 2003. Version: June 13, 2003. 1. Most of the rst part can be found in van de Geer (2000) Empirical Processes in M-Estimation, Cambridge University Press (see also the references therein). The second part also contains more recent work. Contents Part 1. Empirical processes and asymptotic normality of M-estimators 1. Introduction 1.1. Both empirical processes and semiparametric inference techniques have become increasingly important tools for solving statistical estimation and inference problems. These tools are particularly important when the statistical model for the data at hand is semiparametric, in that it has one or more unknown component that is a function, measure or some other infinite dimensional quantity. Empirical process methods are powerful techniques for evaluating the large sample properties of estimators based on semiparametric models, including consistency, distributional convergence, and validity of the bootstrap. Semiparametric inference tools complement empirical process methods by, among other things, evaluating whether estimators make efficient use of the data. View. With Applications to Statistics. Authors. (view affiliations). The weak convergence theory developed in Part 1 is important for this, simply because the empirical processes studied in Part 2, Empirical Processes, are naturally viewed as taking values in nonseparable Banach spaces, even in the most elementary cases, and are typically not Borel measurable. Much of the theory presented in Part 2 has previously been scattered in the journal literature and has, as a result, been accessible only to a relatively small number of specialists. Series Print ISSN 0172-7397. We review some sample complexity results for the SAA method obtained so far in the literature, for the static and multistage setting, under this umbrella. Indeed, we show that the derived sample sizes estimates in Shapiro(2006) are upper bounds for the sample complexity of the SAA method in the multistage setting. In [5] this result was extended to the multistage stochastic setting. In section 3 we dene precisely what we mean by the sample complexity of a T -stage stochastic optimization problem and of a class of such problems. Moreover, we extend some results of [5] to address a more general class of multistage problems (relaxing. 2.

In various science/engineering applications, such as independent component analysis, image analysis, genetic analysis, speech recognition, manifold learning, evaluation of the status of biological systems and time delay estimation it is useful to estimate the differential entropy of a system or process, given some observations. The simplest and most common approach uses histogram-based estimation, but other approaches have been developed and used, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. The main

Functional analysis is a branch of mathematical analysis, the core of which is formed by the study of vector spaces endowed with some kind of limit-related structure (e.g. inner product, norm, topology, etc.) and the linear functions defined on these spaces and respecting these structures in a suitable sense. The historical roots of functional analysis lie in the study of spaces of functions and the formulation of properties of transformations of functions such as the Fourier transform as

Buy this book. Probability limit theorems in infinite-dimensional spaces give conditions un der which convergence holds uniformly over an infinite class of sets or functions. Early results in this direction were the Glivenko-Cantelli, Kolmogorov- Smirnov and Donsker theorems for empirical distribution functions. Meanwhile, work on probability in separable Banach spaces, in relation with the geometry of those spaces, began in the 1950's and developed strongly in the 1960's and 70's. We have in mind here also work on sample continuity and boundedness of Gaussian processes and random methods in harmonic analysis.

The non-existence of credit markets implies that initial income is a determinant of who actually obtains an education. We consider the outcome of a process in which income is taxed to provide subsidies for education. and taxes are chosen by majority voting. We characterize the outcome as a function of both the level and the distribution of income in the economy. In particular we derive conditions under which middle income individuals ally themselves with upper income individuals at the expense of lower income individuals, and vice versa. Ricardian economics are the economic theories of David Ricardo, an English political economist born in 1772 who made a fortune as a stockbroker and loan broker.[1][2] At the age of 27, he read An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith and was energized by the theories of economics. His main economic ideas are contained in On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817). To Ricardo, value had much to do with the cost of production, which included wages and profit (St. Clair 27) and how much you paid a worker affected the price you put on the item. "Comparative Advantage, Trade, and Payments in a Ricardian Model with a Continuum of Goods". Political economy is the study of production and trade and their relations with law, custom and government; and with the distribution of national income and wealth. As a discipline, political economy originated in moral philosophy, in the 18th century, to explore the administration of states' wealth, with "political" signifying the Greek word polity and "economy" signifying the Greek word "okonomie" (household management). The earliest works of political economy are usually attributed to the British

Emergency medical care and health system performance. The three fundamental functions of a health system are to improve the health of the population, respond to peopleâ™s expectations, and provide financial protection against the costs of ill-health (8). Emergency medical care can contribute positively to these functions. Emergency medical care has three components: care in the community; care during transportation, which is related to the question of access; and care on arrival at the receiving health facility. Disease-based interventions in emergency medical care can produce generalized benefits for populations. In Nigeria, for example, an emergency obstetric transport system transferred 29 women to higher levels of care over a period of two years.

The case for treating elements of nature as legal â˜personsâ™ is outlined in the book, Rights of Nature: A Legal Revolution That Could Change the World by environmental lawyer David Boyd. In a conversation with Living on Earth Host Steve Curwood he explained how this approach can go a long way to protecting critical ecosystems from human exploitation and destruction. CURWOOD: Less than 150 years ago in America, black people finally won the right to be full citizens and vote, and voting rights for women followed 50 years later. And less than two decades ago, people in America won the right to marry whomever they choose, regardless of gender. Over time the rights of people to fairness and equality have expanded, and now there is a move to extend intrinsic rights to exist to nature. This book deals with institutional reforms in response to a mounting environmental crisis in Vietnam. The author introduces the reader to the most important environmental problems that Vietnam is currently facing and shows how the emphasis on economic growth has come at the expense of the natural environment. Following an assessment of the still deteriorating environmental situation, the book develops a theoretical framework of institutional change within the political system seeking to overcome the traditionally static understanding of institutions. usenet.nl/download/Environmental Governance in Vietnam: Institutional Reforms and Failures. The author presents his theory of civilization and suggests how the enormous problems within Western civilization can be addressed by pursuing the original basis of Western civilization-individualism.
