Published: 13 February 2018 Abstract: Tennis rackets have advanced significantly since the invention of the game in 1874, including innovations in both shape and materials. Advances in these design parameters have implications for racket performance, especially swing speed. This study tested one hundred rackets, spanning brands and eras, using simple, portable instruments in order to pilot protocols and make recommendations for streamlining testing procedures for tennis rackets. A wide range of properties were measured and documented for each racket. We suggest that since Transverse and Lateral Moment of Inertia are well correlated, measuring both is not necessary when processing a large number of rackets. In addition, it is also possible to predict the Transverse Moment of Inertia well from models that use simple dimension and mass measurements, which may be preferable in larger studies.

TennisIndustry New Racquets EQUIPMENT Frames for Fall Racquet companies are introducing new product for the US Open and fall season. By Nate Pagel he US Open often has been a time for racquet manufactur- ers to introduce new product, as their Tsponsored pros take to the court on the tennis world’s grandest stage. At press time in mid-July, a handful of companies had new frames they were able to divulge to us. Expect other companies to introduce new models as the Open plays out and we head into the fall and holiday seasons. DUNLOP CS 8.0 and CS 10.0 > dunloptennis.us New this fall from Dunlop are the CS 8.0 and CS 10.0. Both, says the company, offer “power and comfort to spare,” thanks to Dunlop’s Srixon engineering, which features Sonic Core technology. Dunlop’s CS 10.0 also features the Dual Bridge System and Dynamic Hole technologies, designed to increase dampening while also enhancing the sweetspot. The CS 8.0 features Synchro Charge and Straight String System tech- nologies to mitigate the stiff feel of off-center hits and increase string movement for greater power and spin, says Dunlop. • Tournament of Roses by Kim Oldis AIFD, CFD, AIFD Past President
Bi-Monthly Newsletter of the February/March 2019 American Institute of Floral Designers Tournament of Roses By Kim Oldis AIFD, CFD, AIFD Past President The Tournament of Roses is one of the most spectacular floral events in the world, witnessed by 700,000 guests and 70+ million national and international viewers via TV and media. There is nothing else like it! For me, The Tournament of Roses Parade (and the Rose Bowl Football Game) is a family tradition as far back as I can remember. I love New Year's Day because of it! My first experience with the Rose Parade in 2005 fulfilled my original goal, just to be able to “work” as a volunteer! For the next 6 years – gaining float design experience, confidence in designing for the Judges and TV cameras, and ultimately knowing that at the end of the day, regardless of the freezing cold, lack of sleep and sore feet, the labor of love that was shared with the floral world was worth it. And to think that maybe the next year I might get invited back! How lucky could one be! One of the bonuses of the Tournament of Roses Parade is the lifelong friendships that are made. Working with my fellow AIFD members, reacquainting with the repeat, on-site parade volunteers, meeting the incredible team of Tournament volunteers that make up the infrastructure of this organization, these are the people who give their support to this truly unique event. It’s ALL for the love of this historic FLORAL parade. Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that an invitation to judge the Rose Parade was in my future.

In place of the self split between unconscious representations and the syntax of speech, Peirce’s general sign theory provides an evolutionary account of symbol development within a trichotomy of sign-object relations, icon, index and symbol, as opposed to interpretations of Freud using the linguistic sign which reify the split subject mid assimilate unconscious processes to the tropes of languie. Peirce’s sign-interpretant relation, is used to re-describe Freud’s account of the shift from narcissism to object relations, from the primary iconic dyad to the subject constructed through the symbol of sexual difference.
