How was time experienced, conceptualized and organized? What were the temporal practices that structured early modern lives, either individually or collectively? How did one measure time and acknowledge its effects on people, and what were the cultural imaginaries, sensory settings or discursive frames through which time became lived reality? Time could be experienced as an embodied aspect of human existence, but was also represented and mediated in various ways. In this journal issue, we are looking for the ways in which people managed and conceptualized both time and temporality and incorporated them into their understanding of the specific cultural context(s) in which they lived. The idea that time is culturally constructed has its own history, of course, and so has the interest in exploring its development. Peter Burke has traced these developments and suggests that the most significant turning point may have occurred around 1900, with the social theory of Émile Durkheim and his circle, later followed by the Annales historians. The basic binary opposition underlying these studies was the one between self and other, presented as a contrast between traditional and modern, between what Febvre called le temps vécu and le temps-mesuré. Time in traditional societies, according to the model used by these scholars, is qualitative, concrete, local, imprecise, or in a word, organic. Time in modern societies, on the other hand, is quantitative, abstract, uniform, and exact, as mechanical as the clocks and watches used to measure it … Traditional time is the time of experience, organized and measured by tasks, especially agricultural tasks … Modern time, by contrast, according to these scholars, was exact time, measured by the clock, a sense of time appropriate to commercial

    1 Chapter 12 ‘THINKING MINDS OF BOTH SEXES’: Patriotism, British Bluestockings and the Wars against Revolutionary America and France, 1775-1802 Emma V. Macleod ‘Without intending it, I have slid into politics’, wrote the poet Anna Seward at the end of a long letter to a regular correspondent, Colonel Dowdeswell of Shrewsbury, in November 1797. ‘In a period so momentous,’ she explained, ‘their attraction, to thinking minds of both sexes, is resistless.’1 This quotation might suggest that Seward had forgotten herself temporarily to make a brief aside which touched on some political question. In fact, her whole letter had been devoted to discussing the war against revolutionary France—her enjoyment of a concert in Birmingham given to celebrate Admiral Duncan’s victory at Camperdown the previous month; the civility of the eighty French prisoners of war exiled in her home town of Lichfield in Staffordshire for the past ten months; the prisoners’ inhospitable reception by most of the other residents of Lichfield and their recent removal to Liverpool jail; her musing on the sufferings of British prisoners of war in France; the miseries and evils of war in general; and the prejudice and corruption of the Pitt administration in its refusal to seek peace with France sooner. The ‘slide’ into 2 politics that she mentions therefore represents no momentary lapse, but rather a natural shift from describing her experience, as a genteel woman, of the British homefront during the war against revolutionary France—through appropriately feminine expressions of anxiety about British prisoners and the horrors of war—to clearly political judgement regarding the errors of government policy.

    introduction “Te Commerce of Life”: Elizabeth Montagu (1718–1800) Nicole Pohl Tere is a much higher character than that of a wit or a poet, or a savant, which is that of a rational and sociable being, willing to carry on the commerce of life with all the sweetness and condescension decency and virtue will permit.1 John Doran’s characterization of Elizabeth Montagu aptly reflects her multifaceted and versatile role in eighteenth-century society. Montagu was and still is known as a prominent author, critic, patron, businesswoman, and salonnière. Trough birth, friendship, and marriage she was part of and, at times, the center of important political, literary, and social crosscutting networks that connected the public sphere and the court. She corresponded extensively with leaders of British Enlightenment coteries, such as Edmund Burke, Gilbert West, David Garrick, and Horace Walpole, as well as the Bluestocking inner circle—Elizabeth Carter, Sarah Scott, Hannah More, Hester Trale Piozzi, Frances Burney, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Elizabeth Vesey, and Frances Boscawen. Her vast correspondence (ca. 8,000 extant letters) is now collected in various archives and private collections across the U.K. and the United States; only a few of these have been printed, ofen in heavily edited versions.2 With such wealth of epistolary material, it is not surprising that her letters 1.     Women and Politeness in Eighteenth- Century England This first in-depth study of women’s politeness examines the complex relationship individuals had with the discursive ideals of polite femininity. Contextualising women’s autobiographical writings (journals and letters) with a wide range of eighteenth-century printed didactic material, it analyses the tensions between politeness discourse which aimed to regulate acceptable feminine identities and women’s possibilities to resist this disciplinary regime. Ylivuori focuses on the central role the female body played as both the means through which individuals actively fashioned themselves as polite and feminine, and the supposedly truthful expression of their inner status of polite femininity. Soile Ylivuori is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at Queen Mary, University of London. This follows from our successful partnership with the law firm during our 150th Anniversary year in 2006, and before that their sponsorship of the Cecil Beaton and Lee Miller exhibitions. This spring we feature Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913–2008, which will then go on to be shown in Edinburgh, Los Angeles and Canberra. This special exhibition charts the magazine’s particular tradition of commissioning photographic portraits by some of the most respected photographers over the years, from Edward Steichen, Cecil Beaton and Man Ray in the early period, through to Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino, who have appeared in Vanity Fair since it was re-launched in 1983. The celebrated subjects of these portraits range from Albert Einstein and Greta Garbo to Arthur Miller and Madonna.
