2003–2004 ANNUAL REPORT SAM Students with Sanislo Feast SAM CONNECTS ART TO LIFE CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ARTIST LI JIN’S A FEAST made a permanent impression on the fourth- and fifth-grade students at Sanislo Elementary School. Inspired by the fifty-nine- foot-long painting depicting food from a traditional Chinese dinner on a background of recipes written in Chinese calligraphy, the students set out to re-create their own version. Art teachers Ruth Winter and Carolyn Autenrieth designed the project to celebrate the diversity of cultures at their school. Students painted their favorite ethnic foods, and staff helped transcribe the recipes into the students’ original languages. On display at the Seattle Asian Art Museum last spring, the students’ work, Sanislo Feast, a fifty-foot-long art scroll portraying food and languages from seventeen different nations and cultures, reflected the heritage of Sanislo students and staff. Students, families and teachers commemorated the unveiling of their “masterpiece” with a special celebration at SAAM. cover: Li Jin, China, born 1958, A Feast, 2001, ink on Xuan paper, 39 3/8 x 708 5/8 in., Courtesy of the artist and CourtYard Gallery, Beijing right: Wolfgang Groschedel and Kunz Lochner, Equestrian armor for Philip II, ca. 1554, etched steel and gold, Patrimonio Nacional, Real Armería, Madrid SEATTLE ART MUSEUM TABLE OF CONTENTS 1 Director’s Letter 17 Betty Bowen Award 2 Board of Trustees 18 Reaching Out to Youth & Families 3 Broadening, Deepening, Diversifying 19 Teaching and Learning 4–5 One Museum, Three

Annual Report Fiscal Year 2010 July 1, 2009–June 30, 2010 For the 2009–2010 fiscal year, Tacoma Art Museum presented a series of exhibitions focusing on its mission of “emphasizing the art and artists of the Northwest” alongside nationally and internationally acclaimed artists across all media. The summer of 2009 began with the dynamic pairing of jewelry exhibitions, Ornament as Art: Avant-Garde Jewelry from the Helen Williams Drutt Collection, the only West Coast venue of the major exhibi- tion organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Loud Bones: The Jewelry of Nancy Worden, which was curated by Ta- coma Art Museum. The autumn exhibitions included A Concise History of Northwest Art, featuring highlights of the museum’s Northwest art collection and exploring the development of the region’s art from the 1890s to the present. Joe Feddersen: Vital Signs, organized by Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University, presented a retrospective look at Native American art- ist Joe Feddersen, a nationally acclaimed printmaker, basket maker, and glass artist. One of the museum’s most treasured col- lections was featured in The Movement of Impressionism: Europe, America, and the Northwest, a survey of how a painting style spread from late 19th-century Paris to the Northwest. The museum’s works by Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Au- guste Renoir along with works by Everett Shinn, Maurice Prendergast, and others were supplemented by important loans of Northwest impressionists. The winter season featured The Secret Language of Animals, a two-gallery exhibition exploring the changing ways artists used animals as symbols for human relationships across three centuries of American and European art.

Contact Information Reference Department Archives of American Art Smithsonian Institution Washington. D.C. 20560 www.aaa.si.edu/askus Transcript Preface The following oral history transcript is the result of a tape-recorded interview with George Tsutakawa on September 8, 12, 14 & 19, 1983. The interview took place in Seattle, WA, and was conducted by Martha Kingsbury for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview DATE: SEPTEMBER 8, 1983 [Tape 1; Side A] [GEORGE TSUTAKAWA reviewed the transcript and added clarification, particularly about the World War II years. His added comments with his initials are in brackets--Ed.] MARTHA KINGSBURY: George, why don't we start by talking about a lot of biographical matters. I'd like to know about your personal background, your family, your growing up in Seattle and Japan also, education. GEORGE TSUTAKAWA: Uh huh. Well, let's see now. My father was a merchant who came to Seattle in 1905, and he started a small business and eventually he gets involved in fairly large company exporting and importing American goods and Japanese goods. He, as I recall, had business in Japanese food, clothing, art goods, and all sorts of things from Japan, and then in turn he was sending lumber from the Northwest to Japan. He also dealt in scrap metal and just anything. MARTHA KINGSBURY: That he sent to Japan? GEORGE TSUTAKAWA: Yeah, he sent to Japan.

  • Helmi: Letters from Elma, by Wesley Wehr
WashingtonHistory.org HELMI Letters from Elma By Wesley Wehr The Magazine of Northwest History, Summer 2000: Vol. 14, No. 2 Nellie Cornish said to me, "Whoever becomes an artist dedicates himself to a lifetime of hard work." Someone also said, "Artists and saints are akin"—both possess infinite patience. —Helmi Juvonen Among the major artists of the "Northwest School"—Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, George Tsutakawa, and about a dozen others—painter Helmi Juvonen has emerged as an important figure. Her work is imaginative, often playful, and bountifully original. No other non-Indian artist in the early history of Northwest Art has had such firsthand knowledge of Native American art of the Pacific Northwest. The only comparable figure would be British Columbia painter Emily Carr. Both Juvonen and Carr sketched the totemic art and rituals of the region, transforming their on-the-spot sketches into strong, distinctive artistic statements. Helmi Dagmar Juvonen (1903-1985) was born in Butte, Montana. When she was 15, she and her family moved to Seattle. Her Finnish parents encouraged her artistic expression as a child. By the time Helmi entered Queen Anne High School, she was already an accomplished artist. She continued to develop her talent at the Cornish School (now Cornish College of the Arts) and appears to have been a highly motivated, talented, and hard-working student. Boxes of notebooks from these early days attest to her passion for drawing. Helmi made a respectable living by selling prints to clients like Frederick & Nelson and making sketches for the Seattle Times.
