ABSTRACT African Literature written in European languages still remains a critical subject among schoiars who reflect on the adequateness between the substantial ideas of such literature and its linguistic medium. This book seeks to shed light on the corrélation between Senegalese poetry written in French and its linguistic vehicle. The opening chapter explores the historical and critical reasons behind the emergence of Senegalese literature in French from 1945 to 1982. The colonial situation proved to be a compelling factor for Sénégal to accept French as its official language, as was the case in ail Africain territories under French rule. The adoption of French as a new form of expression was felt by the fîrst génération of Senegalese poets both as a situation of malaise, but it also served their purpose in that they used this medium to fîght the colonial oppressive ideology. Léopold Sédar Senghor, Birago Diop and David Diop, founders of the Négritude movement, transcended the language barriers in their literary activity by developing a new and distinctive methodology of approach to their poetry. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. aesthetic théories that Léopold Sédar Senghor has grounded in several of his essays on the subject of African poetry. Senghor offers aesthetic spécifications and distinctive characteristics of African civilization which serve as a paradigm for an original and authentic African poetry written in French. The second part of the book is a close analysis of the imaginative literature of two générations of Senegalese poets: fîrst the prominent figures of the Négritude movement, and then Malick Fall, Ibrahima Sali and Amadou Lamine Sali, poets of the Post-colonial era. Both générations of poets demonstrate their mastery of French. They also show a great skill in adapting the language to their convenience. To that end, the Négritude poets, who lay emphasis on their spécifie identity and the cultural values of their continent, often adopt a subversive language and introduce neologisms that best describe their affective moods. The Post-colonial poets seem less inspired by the critical values of their culture than by the sociopolitical issues that challenge the globe. iii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.     80 Doing Theatre: Theatre Pedagogy through the Folktale Jean Small Professor Emerita, UWI Kingston, Jamaica [email protected] Abstract Theatre Pedagogy holds that cognition is body-based. Through performance the body’s unconscious procedural memory learns. This information learned through repeated interaction with the world is transmitted to the brain where it becomes conscious knowledge. Theatre Pedagogy in this case study is based on the implementation of a Caribbean cultural art form in performance, in order to teach Francophone language and literature at the postsecondary level in Jamaica. This paper describes the experience of “doing theatre” with seven university students to learn the French language and literature based on an adaptation of two of Birago Diop’s folktales. In the process of learning and performing the plays, the students also understood some of the West African cultural universals of life which cut across the lives of learners in their own and in foreign cultural contexts. Keywords: Birago Diop, heritage folktale, cognition, theatre performance, theatre pedagogy Context The Caribbean is an artificially created space peopled at the service of colonization and the plantation system. Jamaica, like the other islands in the Caribbean, has a population of which the largest percentage is of African ancestry, since their forefathers were brought as slaves mainly, from West Africa. The slaves carried with them through the Middle Passage, not only their physical selves, but their language and culture which have been passed on orally, from generation to generation, resulting in the development of an Afrocentric Caribbean culture that is unconsciously owned and practised by the general populace.

Used principally for indicating colonial approval of and control over a text in the early years of the literatures produced by so- called indigenous or colonized writers in the French empire,1 it later became in the hands of postcolonial writers such as Assia Djebar, Edouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau , Werewere Liking, and Henri Lopes a space for signifying a break with colonial models of literary patronage. In the colonial and postcolonial contexts, the paratext is always about more than the promotion of literature. All paratexts inscribe the texts to which they are attached in particular discursive fields, but the paratexts to works pro- duced in the colonial and postcolonial context do so in a way that renders the political use of the novel explicit.

  • Oral Tradition and Biblical Studies Began with His Dissertation, Later Published As Oral Formulaic Language in the Biblical Psalms (1967)
    About the Authors Roderick Beaton (King’s College London) has carried on fi eldwork on Greek oral poetry in many parts of Greece and Cyprus and is the author of Folk Poetry of Modern Greece (1980). He has researched and published extensively on Greek literature dating from the twelfth century to the present and on modern Greek folk music. His current research project is a book entitled The Medieval Greek Romance. Robert Culley’s interest in oral tradition and Biblical studies began with his dissertation, later published as Oral Formulaic Language in the Biblical Psalms (1967). In addition to the general problem of the applicability of this approach to the Bible, he has touched on similar areas in Studies in the Structure of Hebrew Narrative (1976) and plans further commentary in a Proppian study of narrative action now underway. He is presently Professor of Religious Studies at McGill University. In 1963 Eric Havelock’s landmark book Preface to Plato revolutionized the way we read both Homer and other ancient Greek literature by making the case for the “oral encyclopedia” of cultural attitudes, values, and beliefs that was “published” in oral performance. A collection of his seminal writings, The Literate Revolution in Greece and Its Cultural Consequences (1982), has since appeared, as has a fascinating study of the Presocratics (1983). He is Sterling Professor of Classics (Emeritus) at Yale University. Burton Raffel (University of Denver), author of some forty books on an enormous variety of literary subjects, has given us classic translations of some of our most cherished works, such as Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and many more.

These novels include Mariama Bâ’s Un Chant écarlate (1981) (Scarlet Song), Myriam Warner-Vieyra’s Juletane (1982), and Sony Labou Tansi’s Les yeux du volcan (1988). It studies the concept of madness as a myth and a cultural construction, as well as how women, to serve their own ends, can appropriate madness and inflict violence on others. It not only studies the violence done to women by men, but all forms of domestic violence, which include those done by women to men, by parents to their children, by in-laws and extended family members to wives of the family, and among co-wives. It also studies the role of the community as perpetrator of domestic violence as presented in the novels that studied.

Art, poetry, novels, plays, films and essays in translation are analyzed as documents of historical, social, political and cultural issues of Francophone Africa. Films provide authentic cultural products to explore important aspects of Africa. Students will thus be able to experience the fabric and texture of African. A variety of topics have been selected in order to familiarize you with essential cultural aspects of African countries that have been influenced by French colonization. (See detailed description of topics of exploration in Course content.) Throughout the course you will come to understand the complex realities of Africa, its geographical, historical and social/cultural contexts and its relationships to the West, especially to France. You will listen to African voices telling their side of the story on colonial, neo-colonial, postcolonial Francophone Africa as well as on the cultural values of traditional and contemporary Africa. However, as immigrant communities have become more established throughout the country, questions have arisen in regard to what constitutes French national identity. Should the nation adopt a spirit of tolerance, allowing new arrivals to integrate into French society while retaining their own cultural identity, or in an effort to preserve and perpetuate French language and culture, should immigrants instead be required to assimilate and adopt the customs of their new homeland? While integration versus assimilation of immigrants is of particular importance today as French society continues to evolve, it is not the first time that the country has had to consider the implications of welcoming foreigners on its soil. Dating back a century ago to when France’s Third Republic set about building an empire under the guise of the mission civilisatrice, assimilation has long been used to promulgate French culture around the globe. However, despite the lofty goals of France’s civilizing mission, assimilation complicated matters for colonizer and colonized alike as it ironically threatened the foundation on which colonialism was based. In order to maintain a notion of superiority and to justify their presence in the colonies, the colonizers could not allow the colonized to fully assimilate lest they become their equals, eliminating the need for a colonial presence altogether.
