Statement of Laura MacCleery Vice President, Consumer Policy and Mobilization, Consumer Reports Before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade “Disrupter Series: Self-Driving Cars” Tuesday, November 15, 2016 Summary • Traffic deaths on U.S. roads rose to 35,092 last year and are estimated to have jumped another 10% in the first half of 2016. This is a public health crisis. We urgently need to find ways to prevent more traffic deaths and injuries and meaningfully counter this trend. • Crashworthiness improvements should continue or even be accelerated as an accompaniment to technological advances, and defects and recalls should be more aggressively overseen and pursued as warranted by the facts. • Automated driving systems—intended to yield self-driving cars—are advancing rapidly, and may be part of the solution. However, there is much more work that needs to be done to test and demonstrate safety benefits and protect consumers from novel risks. • This is particularly true regarding cars with semi-autonomous features, which if deployed irresponsibly can give consumers a dangerously false sense of security. • As the industry’s regulator, NHTSA can ensure that companies put consumers first by setting robust safety standards. NHTSA’s recent guidance rightly covers a wide range of important subjects, but it is light on specific steps companies must take to assure safety. • To protect the public and build trust in automated driving features, Congress should provide NHTSA the resources to independently and thoroughly assess the safety of automated systems and better understand how drivers interact with these new features. -

RALPH NADER Corporatism's Threat to Democracy Interviewed by David Barsamian Winsted, CT 27 February 2021 Ralph Nader, a legendary figure, has spent a lifetime fighting on behalf of ordinary people. Life magazine ranked him as one of the most influential Americans of the twentieth century. The Atlantic named him one of the hundred most influential figures in U.S. history. Founder of Public Citizen, he is a long-time advocate for consumer safety and workers’ rights. He rose to fame in the 1960s when he took on General Motors and its unsafe Corvair car. His 1965 book Unsafe At Any Speed not only created a sensation but also was instrumental in the enactment of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. His efforts helped create the Environmental Protection Agency. He has exposed the misdeeds of the corporate sector as well as of the political system. In recent years he has led the struggles around NAFTA, the WTO, corporate welfare, and single-payer health care. He is the author of numerous books including Return to Sender, Unstoppable, To the Ramparts and Breaking Through Power. He is co-author of Fake President and Wrecking America. For More Information or to arrange interviews with Ralph Nader Contact: Hunter Jones or Todd Main 202-387-8034 [email protected] The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Acts – Fiftieth Anniversary (1966-2016) Nader Holds Four-Day Conference to Commemorate Fiftieth Anniversary Year of the Publication of Unsafe at Any Speed Today, September 9, 2016, marks the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson’s signing of the National Highway Traffic Safety Act, a result of Ralph Nader's landmark book Unsafe at Any Speed, which was published the previous year. The book opened with the faulty rear suspension system of the General Motors Corvair, This defect could cause the Corvair to skid violently and roll over. The corporate negligence that had produced the various Corvair defects, Nader said, was “one of the greatest acts of industrial irresponsibility.” More broadly, Unsafe at Any Speed documented how Detroit habitually subordinated safety to style and marketing concerns. The main cause of automobile occupant injuries, Nader demonstrated, was not the “nut behind the wheel” so often blamed by the auto industry, but the inherent engineering and design deficiencies of motor vehicles that were woefully unsafe, especially in terms of “crashworthiness”—no seat belts, etc. At the signing, President Johnson said, “I am proud of the 89th Congress, which took my proposals and brought forth these laws. And I’m proud at this moment to sign these bills—which promise, in the years to come, to cure the highway disease, to end the years of horror and give us hope.” The publication of Unsafe at Any Speed led to GM’s contemptible investigation by private detectives and attempts to smear Nader, GM's subsequent public apology at a Senate hearing, and ultimately the 1966 auto and highway safety laws that have saved countless lives and profoundly accelerated the pace of auto safety innovation. -

Although CAS has a staff of less than a dozen people, its work is supported by approximately 20,000 members across the United States, and it is nationally recognized as a leader in the areas of automobile safety and consumer protection. CAS vigorously supports economically feasible motor vehicle safety policies that will reduce the risk of crash-related deaths and injuries. CAS serves as an important counterweight before federal policymakers to the automobile industry, whose positions on these safety issues are dictated by the desire to maximize profits for shareholders rather than to strike the proper balance between safety and other vehicle features. Center Console Mounted Trunk Release Kit (05-09 All) Please take your time, gather all the necessary tools, and carefully read the instructions before starting. Tools Required: - Flat head screwdriver - Phillips screwdriver - Pliers Package Contents: - OEM Ford access panel w/ pre-drilled hole & switch - Wiring harness - Wiring connectors - All necessary wire taps (red & blue) - Mounting hardware Installation: 1. Begin by making sure your car is off and your parking brake is on. Remove any items that may be in your center console, cup holder, glove compartment, or passenger side floor. 2. First, we will remove the center console cover. Remove the two Phillips screws located towards the rear of the center console cover, and set them aside for re-installation later. 3. Make sure your emergency brake is as far up as possible in order to make it easier to remove the center console panel. Note: the rubber boots that shroud the emergency brake lever tend to hug the lever as you attempt to remove the center console. 4. Remove the leather bezel from the shifter (manual transmission) or trim bezel (automatic). This is done by prying up gently on one corner with a small flat head screwdriver. Note: On manual transmissions, you must unscrew the shifter ball in order the remove the leather bezel completely. While unscrewing the shifter ball, hold the leather boot in place so it doesn’t get twisted up. 5. Begin to carefully lift the entire center console. Several clips hold the console into place and they will unsnap as you pull up on the panel. -
