Since then the situation of most African ungulates has deteriorated; numbers have been continually decreasing which has negatively affected other species and their habitat. In some cases, recent IUCN Red List assessments report the species situation as becoming more critical. There are also, thanks to the passion and commitment of organizations and individuals, some success stories. Conservation efforts should not, however, be directed only at an individual species or locality. For successful conservation the cooperation between different conservation projects and sharing of experiences is essential. Antelopes, giraffes and hippos are an integral part of African ecosystems and need effective conservation to ensure the future for other African fauna as well as for humans. For this reason the NGO Derbianus Conservation decided to call for a coordinated meeting entitled “Antelope, Giraffe, Hippo in the 21st Century: Conservation Action in Africa”. The goal of this conference is to convoke antelope conservation actors in order to update and review the situation and status of antelopes and also to promote cooperation and knowledge sharing with people saving other large African megafauna such as giraffes, okapi and hippos. During a year-long preparation phase, Derbianus Conservation members have gathered together experienced conservationists, academics, field researches, students and members of the public to involve them in the actual situation. This will be achieved by sharing ideas and conservations principles, exchanging experiences and building awareness among the general public. Hereby, the meeting aims to contribute to conservation of original African biodiversity and ecosystems, to connect in situ and ex situ research and conservation efforts and to identify new ways of for zoos to support in- situ projects. The conference is organized by the Derbianus Conservation and the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CULS Prague) under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic and in close cooperation with the IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group, Giraffe & Okapi Specialist Group, and Hippo Specialist Group. 8 Aims of the conference: to highlight positive results of conservation efforts in African countries; to motivate and engage young people in the process of African biodiversity conservation; to promote future conservation activities in Africa; to present current research activities related to antelopes, giraffes, and hippos; to connect in situ and ex situ research and conservation of antelopes, giraffes and hippos following the OnePlan approach; to identify new possibilities for zoos to support of in-situ projects.
