Freshwater Fishes of Southeast Asia: Potential for the Aquarium

Tan School of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore, Singapore 119260, Republic of Singapore Southeast Asia is an area rich in biodiversity, with a high degree of endemism in both ¯ora and fauna. Many freshwater ®sh species have been exploited for the ornamental ®sh trade. As the population in South East Asia increases, vast tracts of forests are cleared for agricultural, industrial and urbanization purposes. To conserve and sustainably exploit the wild ®sh population, measures should be adopted to protect this natural resource. Already, several ornamental species have been severely overexploited, e.g. bala shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus), pygmy loach (Botia sidthimunki) and arowana (Scleropages formosus), but the extirpation of local populations occurs for many reasons, including deforestation, and not just because of ®shing for the trade. There are also still many species that have great ornamental ®sh potential. Wild ®sh species have also been successfully bred in captivity and conserved, e.g. tiger barb (Puntius tetrazona), bala shark, pygmy loach and arowana. Other methods of conservation include public education, leaving pristine forests intact and reforestation. The aquarium trade of the bala shark, harlequin rasbora (Rasbora heteromorpha), clown loach (Botia macracanthus), arowana and saw®sh (Pristis microdon) is discussed. The region composed of the countries of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines enjoys year- round warmth, high humidity and light, which has resulted in an environment that is extremely diverse and varied in habitats (Whitmore, 1986). -

It closely resembles P. adiposalis Oshima and P. ussuriensis (Dybowski), but differs in having a large elliptical eye (19.8–24.4% HL), a short maxillary barbel not reaching the posterior margin of the eye, a lightly serrated posterior edge on the second dorsal spine, a caudal fin slightly emarginated with upper lobe slighter longer than lower lobe, frontal concave with a smooth surface, and supraoccipital process short (far from the first basal bone of the dorsal spine). Key words: Siluriformes, Bagridae, Pseudobagrus, new species, southern China Introduction All species of the bagrid catfish genus Pseudobagrus Bleeker, 1859 share the following features: an inferior mouth; narial openings widely separated; four pairs of barbels; top of head covered by skin, except the posterior process of supraoccipital in some species; two dorsal spines; pelvic fin small; caudal fin emarginate, truncate or round. Currently 15 nominal species of Pseudobagrus are recognised in China (Zheng and Dai, 1999), accounting for about half of the worlds species in the genus (see Ng, 2003). -

Species discovered within the Heart of Borneo Boundary 01 A new species of tree frog Polypedates chlorophthalmus (December 2005) Name: Polypedates chlorophthalmus (Anura:Rhacophoridae) Description: A new species of treefrog, measuring 62.1 mm long. It has a rounded snout, bright green eyes and a thin dark gray line at back of its forehead. The species is named for its strikingly coloured eyes, its name coming from the Greek for ‘green eyed’. Location: Discovered within the Heart of Borneo boundary, at Gunung Murid Sarawak, the highest mountain in the state of Sarawak, Northwestern Borneo. The genus Polypedates is known to contain 16 nominal species, of which 10 occur in southeast Asia. The members of the genus are distributed from southern China, Sri Lanka and south-western and north-eastern India south to Indo-China and Indo-Malaya (Frost, 1985). LIM Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research Department of Biological Sciences National University of Singapore Kent Ridge, Singapore 119260 Abstract An update on the taxonomy and conservation status of the 61 indigenous species of freshwater fis hes now known from Singapore is provided. Of these, 26 species (43%) are extinct. Of the 35 extant species, 33 are known in the Nature Reserves and 21 appear to be restricted there. Of the 52 introduced species of fish in Singapore, 17 are present in the Nature Reserves. The conservation status of native fishes in the Nature Reserves is assessed and the survival of hi ghly threatened species discussed. The significance of the Nature Reserves for freshwater fi sh conservation is highlighted. Introduction : be ascertained. The freshwater fish fauna of Singapore is among the best studied in the region and has been the subject of many publications (Alfred, 1961, 1966; Johnson, 1973; Munro, 1990; Lim & P.K.L. Ng, 1990; P.K.L. Ng & Lim, 1996). In the first major synopsis of the Singapore ichthyofauna, Alfred (1966) listed a total of 73 native and introduced species from Singapore of which 42 were still extant. Alfred (1968) subsequently listed 35 native species as extant and believed 19 were extinct. It was 22 years before the next appraisal was made by Lim & P.K.L. Ng (1990) in their guide to the freshwater fishes of Singapore. -

Regional Biosecurity Plan for Micronesia and Hawaii Volume II Prepared by: University of Guam and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community 2014 This plan was prepared in conjunction with representatives from various countries at various levels including federal/national, state/territory/commonwealth, industry, and non-governmental organizations and was generously funded and supported by the Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) and Headquarters, Marine Corps. MBP PHASE 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY NISC Executive Summary Prepared by the National Invasive Species Council On March 7th, 2007 the U.S. Department of Navy (DoN) issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an “Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (OEIS)” for the “Relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Forces to Guam, Enhancement of Infrastructure and Logistic Capabilities, Improvement of Pier/Waterfront Infrastructure for Transient U.S. Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN) at Naval Base Guam, and Placement of a U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Task Force in Guam”. This relocation effort has become known as the “build-up”. In considering some of the environmental consequences of such an undertaking, it quickly became apparent that one of the primary regional concerns of such a move was the potential for unintentional movement of invasive species to new locations in the region. Guam has already suffered the eradication of many of its native species due to the introduction of brown treesnakes and many other invasive plants, animals and pathogens cause tremendous damage to its economy and marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. DoN, in consultation and concurrence with relevant federal and territorial regulatory entities, determined that there was a need to develop a biosecurity plan to address these concerns. -
