Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region. -

The Home Page: Bob and Pat Bondurant’s Fast-Paced Home Written by David M. Brown Bob and Pat Bondurant are always on the move. So is their Paradise Valley home. A circular drive invites friends, family and former racing associates into the eucalyptus- and citrus-shaded home of the legendary race driver and founder of the world-famous Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. Built on two-plus acres in 1984 by Hermosa Homes, with design by David Ross, both Scottsdale, the 7,880-square-foot five-bedroom custom Santa Barbara was renovated in 2002, with new interior design by Ernesto Garcia, ASID, Phoenix. Throughout the home are photographs and automotive memories of Sebring, Daytona, Le Mans, Laguna Seca, the old Riverside International Raceway and Grand Prixs at Watkins Glen, New York, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Belgium, France and Monaco, where the Bondurants married in May 2010. Many of these tracks Bob last raced on more than four decades ago when, as a member of the Shelby American Racing Team, he helped win the1965 Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile World Manufacturer’s Championship — the first and still only Americans to win that prestigious title. And, they did it against Enzo Ferrari’s “unbeatable” GTOs. Recently, Pat and Bob invited us in for a tour of the home and the automotive and personal histories it celebrates. “Our home joins both of our worlds, like a powerful engine in an intelligently, beautifully designed car,” Bob says. “We have the memories of the lives we had before we met, and we have brought them together to celebrate the business, the life and love we now share. -

The Golden Age of Auto Racing Revisited Part 1 © October 22, 2014 Page 1 October 22, 2014 AONE PIZZA AND A MOVIE: The Golden Age of Auto Racing Revisited Part I -- 1948 through 1959 ©* By Phillip Bostwick Following the enthusiastic response to the showing of the motor racing film Rush at the Josiah Smith Tavern in Weston, Massachusetts last winter, AONE officers invested in additional movie and sound equipment and decided to host two motor racing films during the late fall and winter of 2014-2015. The dates for this winter’s “AONE Pizza and a Movie” events, and the movies to be shown, are: 1. Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. The Racers, a 1955 film starring Kirk Douglas, Bella Darvi, Gilbert Roland, Cesar Romero, Lee J. Cobb, and Katy Jurado. This movie is a few minutes short of two hours long and pizza will be brought in at the end of the film for an intermission. During the pizza break some excerpts from my collection of motor racing videos will be shown.† This thirty- eight minute special feature will show movies of some 1950s sport car races and some Formula One races in Europe during the fifties. 2. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Grand Prix, a 1966 film starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand and Toshiro Mifune-- directed by John Frankenheimer. This film is a few minutes short of three hours long with an intermission during the film. Pizza will brought in during that intermission. Chassis 043, a visually striking purple and green beauty, lives today at the Simeone Foundation Museum near the Philadelphia airport.
