  • The 2021 Guide
FestivalsThe 2021 Guide April 2021 Editor’s Note Spring is in the air, vaccinations are in (many) arms, and our hardy crop of mountain, lakeside, and pastorally sited music-makers appear to be in major recovery mode from a very long, dark year. Our 2021 Festival Guide lists 100-plus entries, some still in the throes of program planning, others with their schedules nailed down, one or two strictly online, and most a combination of all of the above. We’ve asked each about their COVID-19 safety protocols, along with their usual dates, places, artists, and assorted platforms. Many are equipped to head outside: Aspen Music Festival, Tanglewood, and Caramoor Music Center already have outdoor venues. Those that don’t are finding them: Central City Opera Festival is taking Carousel and Rigoletto to a nearby Garden Center and staging Dido & Aeneas in its backyard; the Bay Chamber Concerts Screen Door Festival is headed to the Camden (ME) Amphitheater. Still others are busy constructing their own pavilions: “Glimmerglass on the Grass” is one, with 90-minute re- imagined performances of The Magic Flute, Il Trovatore, and the premiere of The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson. The Virginia Arts Festival has also built a new open-air facility called the Bank Street Stage, a large tent area with pod seating options. Repertoire range is as broad as ever, with the Cabrillo Festival priding itself on being “America’s longest-running festival of new orchestral music”; Bang on a Can will make as much avant-garde noise as humanly possible with its “Loud Weekend” at Mass MOCA and its composer trainings later in the summer.

The 2019 Guide Festivals April 2019 Editor’s Note The 2019 Guide What’s your summer music craving—opera in the Swiss Alps? Perhaps it’s chamber music in a California vineyard or prepared piano at a Massachusetts modern art museum? Such is a sampling from the menu of options in our sixth annual Guide to Summer Festivals—at nearly 100 entries, it’s our largest yet, and certainly the most entertaining to peruse. Just a few highlights: A new production of the Mozart Requiem at the Aix-en-Provence Festival; the “Loud Weekend” at Bang on a Can’s annual Festival at Mass MOCA in the Berkshires; the world premiere of Poul Ruders’s The Thirteenth Child at Santa Fe Opera, where Festivals the stage is often open to a view of the sun setting amid the Jemez Mountain range; pianist Yuja Wang (Musical America’s 2017 Artist of the Year) performing in Croatia at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival; Fabio Luisi conducting Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony in Tuscany, at the Chigiana International Festival; the Pacifica Quartet in a Napa Valley winery at Music in the Vineyards; Handel’s Ariodante at the Drottningholms Slottsteater in Switzerland. Opera in the Ozarks, in Eureka Springs, AR, has Mark Adamo’s Little Women on the docket; while the Mark Morris Dance Group will premiere a new work set to Erik Satie’s Sports et divertissements at Mostly Mozart in New York. Also, as proof that there is no spot on earth too remote for live music of any sort to thrive, the 22nd annual Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington, will present Susan Graham in recital while the Miró Quartet will give the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts’s latest opus.

  • The Proliferation of String Quartets in Canada 1991-2014
The Proliferation of String Quartets in Canada 1991-2014 by Min-Jeong Koh A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Min-Jeong Koh 2014 The Proliferation of String Quartets in Canada 1991-2014 Min-Jeong Koh Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This paper examines the proliferation of string quartets in Canada between 1991 and 2014. The year 1991 is a pivotal one: it was the end of a Golden Age of string quartet performance in Canada with the conclusion of the activities of the Orford, Vághy, and Purcell Quartets. It marked, also, the beginning of a New Golden Age of string quartet performance in Canada. Similar to their predecessors, the quartets of this new era have different levels of international success, but one could call it a New Golden Age from the sheer number of professional ensembles active in Canada from 1991 onward. The thesis begins with biographies of leading ensembles of this period: the Alcan, Arthur Leblanc, Claudel-Canimex, St. Lawrence, Lafayette, Penderecki, Molinari, Bozzini, Borealis, Tokai, Silverbirch, Cecilia, Afiara, and the New Orford Quartets. The fourth chapter researches the opportunities available to string quartets in Canada, including the Banff International String Quartet Competition. To supplement the biographies and to gain additional insight on the available resources, eight quartet players participated in interviews. Findings emphasize the need to create more support for Canadian musicians, including both professional ensembles and also young aspiring quartet ensembles, to stay in Canada.
