2 AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA SEASON 2019 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF BAROQUE 3 PAUL DYER

Imagining a Baroque orchestra of the future has led my artistic inspiration for 2019 – the Brandenburg’s 30th season.

In 2049, thirty years from now, what will the role of For the moment, our 2019 Brandenburg series will an orchestra be? Where will we perform? What will be on planet Earth, without beaming or streaming, we wear? Will we still perform to live audiences in and will reveal the amazing creativity and talent of the calm of a concert hall? Or will technology play the human spirit – performed by men and women, a larger role we can barely dream of today? not machines. Bringing period music to audiences across the country and throughout the world is a I have a deep love of our musical past, but I’m also privilege and an honour. Thirty years on since it absolutely fascinated by the possibilities of the future. all began, the Brandenburg is in a beautiful place I was reading up on some trends that many futurists thanks to the many gifted artists, board members, believe are not only possible, but are likely, and I’ve administrative staff, and the audiences who love us considered how they might affect the art of live and the music we play. music-making. Here are my top three. I believe that in the right hands Baroque music has Machines could start thinking like humans from a brilliant future ahead – whether it be streamed 2025. The human ability to produce uniquely exquisite or beamed! art is a fundamental difference that distinguishes us from machines. But, could a computer compose something as profound and personal as Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin? What would it mean for us if, one day, a machine succeeds? We could live in a Matrix-like simulated world by 2045. Paul Dyer AO The thought of living in a simulated world is exciting Co-Founder & Artistic Director and terrifying. But how would this translate to the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra concert stage. Could a conductor or a musician be beamed down onto the stage or into a living room like a scene from a sci-fi film?

Space tourism could be possible in 2050 for the uberwealthy. These tourists will surely want brilliant entertainment and art. So will musicians have performance opportunities in space?
