This career fair provided education to members of the local disability community about both positions available and types of work in the broadcast industry. COVID-19 restrictions on the part of the State and Educational institutions resulted in a suspension of the in-person internship program. The program is scheduled to resume in Fall of 2021. Regular tours were suspended as a health and safety precaution during the reporting period. On May 19, 2021 the Station offered a virtual tour and information panel to 80 members of the Girl Scouts. Director of TV Engineering, TV Special Reporter, Assistant Manager of Live Production, Digital Ad Ops Specialist participated in a panel. The event allowed individuals an opportunity to see a variety of departments and positions involved in producing television and radio broadcasts. The KSL Weather Works Program, in which the Unit’s Meteorologists typically visit local schools resumed the practice on a limited basis, while they continued as a virtual offering for a broader audience through KSLTV.com. The segments covered weather experiments as well as interviews with different members of the KSL broadcast team to discuss career opportunities and experiences. The recordings are made available for those who visit the station’s Facebook page and KSLTV.com. The team made the following presentations: January 21, 2021 at Antelope Elementary School in Layton, Utah with approximately 300 attendees; April 8, 2021 at Orem Elementary School for 50 attendees; and April 23, 2021 at Bountiful High School for approximately 200 attendees. Staff from various functions within the Unit have visited various schools and civic groups, sharing their broadcasting experiences and participating in events to further understanding of broadcasting professions. On September 3, 2020 the Director of Podcasting presented to a communications class at the University of Utah to describe the process of creating and marketing a podcast and answer questions about podcasting. A TV Executive Producer presented a virtual presentation for an advanced level Communications course at the University of Utah in November 2020 with approximately 100 students in attendance. She covered documentary production and answered numerous individuals’ emails about careers in broadcasting in the following days. On January 26, 2021 the TV Director of Engineering conducted a virtual tour and career Q&A for a group of 15 broadcast students from Ensign College. He gave the students a virtual tour and described how different engineering functions get broadcasts to air. On March 5th, 2021 the Sports/Digital Sales Manager addressed a group of about 80 students at the University of Utah Sigma Chi Fraternity as part of the group’s career week. He shared information and answered questions about careers in media marketing and digital advertising. On April 9, 2021 the Chief Photographer participated in a virtual panel sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists on Protecting the Press discussing the protest coverage. It was broadcast live and then distributed out as a video file to a broad audience, including student journalists. To promote understanding of, and compliance with, our policy of equal opportunity employment, all new employees hired have been required to complete two trainings, Sexual Harassment Prevention and Discrimination and Harassment Prevention, as part of their onboarding process. On July 7, 2020, the Chief Diversity Officer for Weber State University participated in a staff meeting for all employees of the Unit. She was interviewed by the Radio Sports Director and addressed questions of diversity, inclusion and equity as employees and as members of the media. On July 21, 2020, the General Manager and several other managers attended a webinar sponsored by RTDNA: Practicing Inclusive Journalism. On August 6, 2020, the General Manager of the Unit attended webinar sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters: Advancing Diversity in Broadcasting and later shared a summary of the information with members of the senior management team. On February 18, 2021 a Professor from the University of Utah and two alumni presented to employees on building trust with diverse communities through grassroots journalism. The session was recorded and provided to all members of the Unit. During the reporting period, 28 employees from the Unit participated 2 sessions of a Company-wide mentoring program spanning the Company’s six business units: 31 employees participated as mentees and 35 as mentors in the Fall 2020 Session; 15 employees participated as mentees and 11 as mentors in the Spring 2021 Session. The mentoring program 3 enables participants an opportunity to develop professional relationships, skills and attributes that will help them progress in their career development.
