Es ist mir eine ausgesprochen große Freude, so wunderbare Künstler, wie die des heuti- gen Abends in Karlsruhe zu Gast zu haben. Immer wieder empfinde ich es als eine Ehre, so gefragte Stars, deren Gastspielanfragen zahlreich sind, bei uns begrüßen zu können. Wir dürfen Künstler vom Staatsballett Berlin, Salzburg Ballett, Zürcher Ballett, Wiener Staatsballett, English National Ballet, Stuttgarter Ballett, Het Nationale Ballet Amster- dam, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo und Katherina Markowskaja mit ihrem Partner Noah Gelber bei uns begrüßen. "When it premiered at the Paris Opéra in 1841, it showed what could be accomplished when a dramatist, a choreographer, a dancer and a composer worked together as a tight-knit creative team. It demonstrated to everyone, inside the dance world and out, the power of integrating art forms into a work of total theater.”! Overturff summarized the plot: Act I introduces Giselle, a charming peasant girl being courted by a handsome neighbor — who actually is a nobleman in disguise, and is already engaged to an aristocrat. When Giselle’s jealous ex-boyfriend reveals the deception, the shock is too much for her; she collapses mentally and dies of a sudden heart seizure. But that’s only the beginning of the story. In Act II, Giselle’s spirit rises from her grave and faces a choice: to forgive her betrayer, or to join the Wilis — beautiful but deadly ghosts who haunt the forest — to hunt him down and take her revenge.! “Giselle is a dream role for a ballerina,” Overturff said.

It's a good thing dancers love to dance, because we're going to be dancing nonstop from Day 1!” The season will open October 2 at the Orpheum Theater with Cleopatra, Overturff’s drama about ancient Egypt’s last queen. Fans will be able to see a preview on September 11, when Ballet Nebraska will perform excerpts on the outdoor stage at Turner Park as part of Opera Omaha’s Opera Outdoors event.     POET-TRANSLATORS IN NINETEENTH CENTURY FRENCH LITERATURE: NERVAL, BAUDELAIRE, MALLARMÉ by Jena Whitaker A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland April 2018 Ó 2018 Jena Whitaker All rights reserved ABSTRACT The ‘poet-translator is a listener whose ears are transformed through translation. The ear not only relates to the sensorial, but also to the cultural and historical. This dissertation argues that the ‘poet-translator,’ whose ears encounter a foreign tongue discovers three new rhythms: a new linguistic rhythm, a new cultural rhythm, and a new experiential rhythm. The discovery of these different rhythms has a pronounced impact on the poet-translator’s poetics. In this case, poetics does not refer to the work of art, but instead to an activity. It therefore concerns the reader’s will to listen to what a text does and to understand how it works. Although the notion of the ‘poet-translator’ pertains to a wide number of writers, time periods, and fields of study, this dissertation focuses on three nineteenth-century ‘poet-translators’ who each partly as a result of their contact with German romanticism formed an innovative and fresh account of linguistic, cultural, and poetic rhythm: Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855), Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), and Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898). Each of these ‘poet-translators acted as cultural mediators, contributing to the development of new literary genres and new forms of critique that came to have significant effects on Western Literature. A study of Nerval, Baudelaire and Mallarmé as ‘poet-translators’ is historically pertinent for at least four reasons.

The two women met when Lloyd was running a dance school in Leeds, England and Farrally was her student. They both immigrated to Canada in 1938, and settled in Winnipeg. There they offered dance classes to the community – starting out with only six students in their first year. Word quickly spread, however, and by year two their enrolment had grown and they were able to establish the “Winnipeg Ballet Club.” By 1943, The Winnipeg Ballet was formed with all of its dancers coming from the Club. Six years later, the Company officially became a not-for-profit cultural institution. In 1951, the Company was invited to perform for then Princess Elizabeth during her visit to Winnipeg, just prior to her becoming Her majesty Princess Elizabeth’s visit to Winnipeg visit to Elizabeth’s Princess Her majesty Queen of England. Following her coronation in 1953, she bestowed The Winnipeg Ballet’s “Royal” designation. Between the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School’s two divisions of study, there is a place for virtually every type of dance student: from preschoolers to adults, those new to dance and those aspiring to become professional dancers.
